L.A. Noire Selling Out Quickly

Okay, either pre-orders are a lot higher than one might expect or Rockstar's L.A. Noire is super hot on day one.

Typically, huge releases see a ton of extra copies - beyond the pre-orders - hit store shelves. But in a regular perusal of the retail locations in this area, we've found that Team Bondi's potential Game of the Year candidate is sold out all over the place. Out of five GameStop locations, all but one had no copies for anyone besides those who pre-ordered, Best Buy was sold out, and Target had exactly two copies left. Interestingly enough, according to one GameStop manager, the game is selling much faster than anticipated, which may explain its lack of availability...did Rockstar actually underestimate the widespread interest in this game? That seems extremely unlikely but even so, the fact remains: if you haven't picked up a copy yet, you may have difficulty finding one.

We'll be posting our review within the next 48 hours (not sure when yet, exactly). I will apologize for the small delay, as I know the gaming community expects reviews on launch day, but I'd like to think our readers fully understand the amount of effort we put into all our reviews, especially in regards to the high-profile titles.

i got mine from a kmart nearby. they said it was very popular but they have a lot of copies left. if anyones looking for a good deal on la noire, kmart is giving away $20 gaming coupon (can be used for infamous 2) and any 19.99 game or less for free. i got resonance of fate with mine but you can also get singularity, farcry 2, or alpha protocol. at least those were the games available at that store.

Going to be picking up my copy up pretty soon, during the course of this week or next week; whenever time permits it.

I have read some of the early reviews... they seem glowing. Tons of atmosphere. Well done RockStar, another star performance.

PSN still not up for me in Asia :(

I've been hearing that this game does have the freedom as GTA and the combat system is average and the main plot is not so good.can anyone clarify?

Yes, I heard the samething: it doesn't have the freedom to cause mayhem at will (you can only shoot or fight during action segments, and driving amok will kill your mission rank quickly), the main story arch comes together, but doesn't quite coalesce well with the side stories, and goes out with a whimper, not a bang. But, the focus of the gameplay is the investigation, and star of the game is highly accurate and detailed LA of the 40's. Fans of Heavy Rain, and even Yakuza (such as yours truly) should find something to like in it. I'll wait until it drops in price, as I have plenty in my backlog.

Good. We do not need another free to kill bystanders type of game.

GTA does that.

I read about places being sold out of new games often, but I must live in an area where that just doesn't happen. I could go buy it at any store that sells video games near me right now. Just waiting on it to arrive in the mail since I got $15 off...

Haven't seen any shortages around where I live, maybe where Ben lives the managers just aren't very good at placing orders.

My local Best Buy was sold out of God of War 3 on release day, but they only ordered 3 copies of it to begin with.

They also had a LAN 1930 costume contest for prizes too

I actually bought the very first copy at my local Best Buy, so I'm not sure how they're doing now. There were a LOT of copies on display, but there were also at least thirty-some people behind me, a fairly impressive number for a local midnite launch. So I imagine it will be having a good week. And based on the few hours I've put into it, I'd definitely say it deserves it.

By all means tale your time with the review, I'd much rather have a thorough review than a review with a short amount of time with the game.

I've been playing the game for most the afternoon. There are a lot of things I love about it. But I must be honest I'm not impressed with the hype the motion scan has gotten. The facial expressions are great no doubt, the lip synching is well done too. Needless to say I'm impressed with the technology, not so impressed by how much hype it received. I still feel like Uncharted 2 is top notch considering the development process compared to the motion scan. But again I'm not saying it's not good, it is very well done. I am loving the game though, it's pretty fun, kind of tedious, but entertaining. Its a lot of fun so far, which is far better than what I expected. I like most of what I've played so far not many complaints at all!

Also Im not sure, there must be some sort of weird demographic thing going on. I walked into Gamestop today not having it preordered, and they gave me the preorder bonus anyways, cus they have so many copies. I'm sure they'd be generous regardless. But even after the midnight release, when he opened the cabinet I'd guess they had at least 20 copies in there just for the PS3, and I'm sure more In the back. So either it's not a popular title where I'm from or my Gamestop overstocked.

Feel free to take your time Ben. You know how much we all appreciate your consistently excellent reviews, and if it means coming in a little bit late, then so be it.

And it's awesome to see that L.A. Noire is garnering such sales. A definite boost for the reputation of Team Bondi, which should act as a bit of a shot in the arm for the local games industry (*fingers crossed*), and also a bump for the intellectual gamers. I hope this persuades more devs to take an intelligent approach. Can't wait to pick this one up.
Peace.

P.S. Does anyone else think that maybe... just maybe Sony will approach Team Bondi to finish up what SCE London started on The Getaway 3, considering McNamara and all that? Also, did you know that both it and Eight Days apparently link to the Santa Monica Studios site (I haven't been bothered to check). Maybe that's what SM are working on...

i was on the lens of truth, and this game is a clear win for the ps3, the graphics are sharper on the ps3, and the game runs more smoothly on the ps3. it's not a bad port on the 360, but the 360 version is missing some reflections, and is reported to have some other performence issues.

anyways, i'm thrilled the ps3 version is superior. i had a strong feeling it would be, but i'm always surprised when the ps3 wins a multiplat face off. good job, team bondi.

Well considering the PS3 was the lead platform for development their is no reason it should be worse. If it was we'd have a serious issue on the developers hands. Anyways the motion scan to me is pretty good, but where they focused on that a bunch, it's apparent they lacked in other places. It's almost obvious their focus was on the facial expressions, which really isn't bad considering it plays heavily on how you solve cases, when questioning people.

So far LA Noire has an *average* of 91% after 13 reviews, and needless to say, that is very, very good.
If memory serves me correctly it's so good that LA Noire may end up being the second or third best release for the PS3 thus far this fantastic year, and the top game along with Portal 2 this spring.

nice!
shocked, i was not expecting this to be so popular seeing how its so different.
still really disappointed from the reviews, i mean come on in a game like this the story is EVERYTHING!
whats the point of having a game like this, if your actions have no consequences?
whats the point of being a detective, and locking up the wrong person has no effect on the story?
this is not a game, its a interactive movie!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We must have read different reviews, cause I got a totally different impression of it.
My impression is that this is much more of a *game* than Heavy Rain ever was, it's more than just "an interactive movie" the way I understand it (and I sure hope so!).

this is a interactive movie because its so linear, its so scripted.
everything happens because its suppose to, not because you made it happen.
that just destroys the game for me.

It's definitely not heavy rain in the story, and choices creating an outcome. But you do have to make clear choices in the game that could make or break a case. You have to gather clues, and interrogate, and if you fail in those solving the case gets really tough when need sufficient evidence. So choices you make still play a vital role now matter how linear the story is.

Ordered mine on eBay from Hong Kong..gotta wait a week or so more, but it's the only way we in Australia can get these games at reasonable prices. An American would be paying over US$110 here! Anyway, it'll be worth the wait, this game's been on my must-have list since it was first announced.

Well I decided at the last minute I was going to buy Uncharted 2 on launch day because I just got paid the day before and really shouldn't have been spending the money. So I went to Gamestop and asked for a copy. The guy asked if I pre-ordered and when I said no he told me I wouldn't be able to find a copy anywhere since I didn't pre-order it. So went to Wal-mart and blam day 1 purchase. Should have went back to rub it in his face, but I was too excited to play Uncharted 2 XD

I guess that's why they cut 2 of the detective's desks right out of the game, all due to the 360's lesser discablities. I hope they give them back to us as Free DLC, since they were supposed to be a PS3 exclusive to begin with

Man, all the more reason to hate on M$ for how they just keep on trying to ruin this gen of gaming!

I picked up this game at midnight Tues and have managed to put in oh 4-5 hours thus far. It is has a different feel than any game I've ever played. My 18y/o daughter stayed up with me until midnight last night just watching me play she was so intrigued by the storyline. She is not a gamer at all... She said it's like watching a crime drama I just want to see what happens next! :)

It's pretty tough to catch on to the interrogation aspect of the game. I'm just a little over 50% right now! I'm tempted to start over again to apply what I've learned thus far...but I won't I'll just replay it after I finish the first one through. That is, unless my daughter takes it over!

There is quite a bit of action , and there ARE side missions to do , but, I'm not messing with those much in the first play through. The fighting is very Red Deadish with more of an emphasis on fist fighting.

The game is not a 10 imho because of a few issues I do not care for. The car controls are not very intuitive and it's difficult to drive fast and control the vehicles(steering is twitchy), gas is R2 and brake is R1 and that takes some getting used to. I've only messed up one interview and had to replay it you seem to be able to finish the case not matter how poorly you do on interrogations and you climb the ladder very quickly.

The ambiance will absolutely blow you away if you enjoy 40s movies, cars, and atmosphere.

I'll stop as I don't want to steal any of the review's thunder (as if I could ) or spoil something for someone. I just wanted to whet some appetite for this game. It's addictive! :)

The gun play and cover system works very well. The clues system is done very well too. I also love the interrogation process! I love the Street Crimes and car chases, just awesome! Very well done Team Bondi! I am going to lose myself in this game going for the platinum.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that the motion capture tech is UNREAL! They look like real people talking! The gestures are life like. They are way better than the body and hand movements though. The tech is above and beyond where the models are right now. The future looks bright for this tech though. We'll be dealing in life like games when the body models catch up. Very excited!
