Starbreeze On Why They Aren't Doing The Darkness II

I was a big fan of The Darkness so when I heard the developer - Starbreeze - wouldn't be handling the sequel, I was a little peeved.

But sometimes, these things just happen. According to what Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark told CVG, the decision to take the new IP away was beyond their control. Thing is, by the time it was decided that a sequel should happen, Starbreeze was already working on a new project and so, The Darkness II went to Digital Extremes. Of course, fans of the first game shouldn't be too annoyed, as the latter studio has worked on both the Bioshock and Unreal Tournament franchises; hence, they know their shooters. Besides, it has been a while since The Darkness satisfied a few fresh next-gen gamers and most probably won't notice any small changes the new studio wishes to make. Some alterations are inevitable, right?

...just so long as I can still send out my demon arms and stealth kill dudes from afar. Don't take that feature away, Digital. I'll be pissed.

Never know the new studio running in could bring a lot of improvements. They definitely have the credentials.

Personally I had some issues with the first one, so I'm hoping for some improvements.

Get rid of the boring subway systems, let me do all the killing instead of just watching it happen.
I've heard rumours that the art direction has gone for a more comic/cell shaded look instead of the more realistically depicted look of the original, plus you only get one darkling to order around, hopefully these are just rumours!
As long as mike patton is doing the voice of the darkness i'll be getting this regardless.

Moving it to a more comic-like look would make sense, considering the origins of the IP. Although the control of only a single Darkling isn't confirmed there will be one primary one that somehow ties into the story, and will also have a greater range of abilities than any one from the first game. Also, the voice of Jackie has been replaced... by Nate Drake. Why is he everywhere?
Peace.

Dude, if those details are true, then that sucks. Cell-shaded is definitely not the way to go with this game, regardless of its origins, and if we can only order one Darkling around, then that'll be quite a limitation IMO.

Also, its pretty surprising that Nolan North now voices Jackie. I know how talented he is with voices, but IMO he sounds almost like the guy from the first one does (if the teaser trailer is any indication). Its just crazy the amount of different voices he can do.

That's a shame. It's always a bit of a letdown when the original creators step back as it usually results in a loss of something special. Then again, DE has been around for a bit longer, and seems to have a better pedigree when it comes to firs person shooters, so perhaps The Darkness II will be better than the first, without losing that something that attracted so many things to it. Time will tell.
Peace.
