Will L.A. Noire Be As Popular As Red Dead Redemption?

The similarities are obvious.

Both games are published by Rockstar, both took at least five years to develop and produce (nearly seven years in the case of L.A. Noire), both are dragging down very similar review scores, both came out in May (okay, maybe that's not so relevant), and both adopt an open-world setting. Granted, the free-roaming aspect in this year's Team Bondi effort isn't a major focal point, as it was in RDR and GTA, but it's definitely there. The control is certainly similar, at any rate.

But given the...well, let's say more "intellectual" foundation of L.A. Noire, does it have any hope of reaching the lofty sales plateaus set by 2010's Red Dead Redemption? The GTA of the Wild West? RDR started fast by selling a good half-million copies in the first few days, and then went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide. According to various reports, they needed to sell at least 4 million just to break even...well, they did that. But is the budget for L.A. Noire just as high and if so, will 4 or 5 million be possible? Based on the critical reception and early gamer interest, it does seem to be headed in that direction.

Even so, the fact remains that this is not GTA or RDR. It's similar structurally but in terms of core goals and priorities, L.A. Noire is a world apart. I just keep thinking it won't cater to the casual gamer quite as much as the other two franchises, although it's hard to miss the advertising. Plus, those who are interested in "watching a movie" might be more inclined to give it a try. ...can you imagine if Rockstar could do this every year? You know they want to. If L.A. Noire hits, they'll have two consecutive years without a GTA where one of their games burned up the charts. Not bad.

I brought Yakuza 4 when the outage occured my first impressions were. Brutal, Funny, Weird. I like how it's all in Japanese, there's also alot to keep you occupied in the City. Go on YouTube and look up 'Yakuza 4 First Revelation'. It's hillarious and sad at the same time.
Question Kiryu: Is there four characters you get to play as? I see one of the trophies is get to Level 20 with all characters, just how big is the story line? Thanks

Yeah Yakuza 2 had the best of combat,story and best finishing moves in all the Yakuza Series.
But i still like Yakuza 1 (Japanese)Story is the best Stories in all video games.

Yakuza 4 has 4 characters to play with and they all have different fighting styles.The city starts to open up,u can go underground,through alleys,harbour etc
Story is long,I always play the yakuza games by completing the side missions also chapter by chapter,It took me 15 hours to complete the story and all side missions of the first character Akiyama,so imagine,main story + side missions+many places to visit+hostess clubs to visit+Tournaments+casino+games etc will give a huge amount of Playtime and it's all awesome.
$60 is too cheap for this game.

I don't think it will be as popular. It will sell well, no doubt. But it's not as accessible for younger people as RDR is. I feel like with how serious it is, it will cater to a lesser audience. But we'll see maybe I'm underestimating the majority of consumers.

Edit: considering it has R* name on it, people will assume it'll be like GTA and that could equal sales. Anything R* touches seems to be gold so, I shouldn't doubt it's potential selling power. But will most gamers like it after a purchase, Especially when speaking of a younger crowd?

I think the targeted audience (most of us) will push this game to great sales. If this sales this will just give the mature audience more titles like this, and heavy rain etc. We buy the most games btw.

I agree. I never said it wouldn't sell well. It will indeed be a popular title and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting this type of game. All I'm saying is it doesnt reach out to a broad audience like RDR did. But maybe it will reach out to those who didn't like RDR and so I could be completely wrong. We will see. Regardless it's worthy of all the sales it receives, and you are correct!

I'd say yes. The casual gamer might think he's buying a GTA-type game. Besides, think more people like police detective movies/SVU than the Wild West/cowboys.

I hope the game does well. I'm not into most of anything rockstar, including something like LA Noire, but I like their presence in the market, in that thier efforts seem to serve the other hemisphere of gaming interests.
CoDs and Battlefields dominate one side, and games from Rockstar at least attempt to balance out the other side.

I'm glad to see all the positive reviews, it has allayed some of my fears and concerns, but I am still waiting to read the psx review before I decide how quick to buy.

I don't think I could afford it right away, but if psx gives it the thumbs up maybe I can find a good deal on it before long.

Not sure, but I am already convinced (without playing it even) that it's going to be better experience for me.

The only one complaint I have is that I read that LA Noire could have been a 6 disc (DVD) game on the 360.

Makes me wonder what we might have missed.

Considering how content driven Rockstar's games are, I'm sure capacity is a major issue when considering dvd.
I think it would be advantageous for Sony to really rally behind rockstar and have them load their blu rays with extra content and missions to really illustrate the difference in space.

But even then, 3 DVDs vs 1 bd-rom does paint a pretty good picture as it is.

From what I read, there actually was that much material to the story of LA Noire.

It isn't hard to believe that MS wouldn't want a 6 disc game shipped on their console to the PS3's one disc.

The sales will definitely be high, based on all the publicity, good word of mouth, and great reviews. But the fact that 'L.A. Noire' is not just taking the 'Grand Theft Auto' formula and planting it in another setting, as well as the fact that it is indeed more linear and story-driven, will undoubtedly hold it back from reaching 'Redemption's 8-million mark.

i doubt it will be as popular. it's got some good early buzz after release, but nowhere near what rdr did. i'm just thrilled the ps3 version is superior according to the lens of truth. finally, r* delivered on the ps3. about time. got sick of their gimped resolutions and framerates on the ps3.

After playing for 4-5 hours I already know this is one of my favorites of the year. I haven't been this engrossed in a video game story since Heavy Rain or RDR. I'm spreadin the word: L.A. Noire is GREAT!!! =^.^=

Let me correct you it probably won't sell well on the 360 side as games like this that are more story driven often don't look at Alan Wake for example, let's say theoretically speaking if Heavy Rain or L.A. Noire was a 360 exclusive then it would they would the same outcome as Alan Wake game.

Should sell reasonably well,judging from the success of heavy rain on ps3 & the fact that it is a r* published multiplat game.

Don't like either of them from a design and concept point of view.

I do acknowledge their great quality though.

i'm not the biggest fan of the time period to be honest. a more modern take on crime solving would've been more interesting to me. ypu know good ol detective work combined wiith modern forensics.

I hope so, just so that we see more developers taking a similar route in content, rather than overloading on brainless violence and gratuitous nudity and calling it mature. I'm thinking that it will sell decently enough, and probably better on the PS3, given the more appreciative audience. It'll still be a close split, but I'll say 3.5m on PS and 3 on 360. Obviously initial interest is very high, and hopefully that keeps up beyond the first price drop to propel sales.

Maybe R* are using this May strategy, as it seems as though few great titles are released between now and September of any year, and knowing that they're capitalising on it by creating something akin to a monopoly. If they release either AGENT or Max Payne 3 in May of next year, I'll know I'm onto something.

Man it really seems like Rockstar is on a roll this gen. First was GTA4 then MCLA (which wasn't their best title but i certainly enjoyed it) Then RDR and now LA noire. They are really killing it here. And releasing in may. Another good idea. All it has to compete with for the summer is infamous 2 for sandbox games. Both are extremely different though so LA noire will easily be a standout title. Ive yet to get RDR and i probably wont get LA noire until infamous 2 is payed for so... im gonna probably be missin out.

LA Noire screams atmoshpere. The detective work is actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be just like lassoing horses in RDR. The acting is nails on in my opinion, up there with every great storytelling title. So is this better than Heavy Rain?...In my opinion Yes becasue first its an actual game, it's longer, and the acting isn't questionable. Heavy Rain was a great game, but it was QTE movie. I loved the emotion involved, the music and of course the original atmosphere. I'm pretty sure LA Noire won't be as emotional as Heavy Rain, but I can help but find this to be the most original game I have ever played. It's really another step in storytelling just like Heavy Rain and the face animations are nice. The graphics arn'te clear like UC2 or and the faces aren't crystal clear like Heavy Rain, but the facial animation is perfect. Makes ME2 look outdated in so many ways. Loving LA Noire so far. Rockstar has done it again in my opinion.

If indeed it does, I think the gaming industry is indeed in a very healthy state that a game like L.A. Noire can be appreciated. As much as I love it, a typical Rockstar outing it is not. It has very much different focuses and goals. The level of maturity and character development Red Dead flirted with.

I hope it will even breed a bit of interest beyond the game in some people into the actual Noire genre of film. Such a rich history of film and it even leads one to appreciate the prerunners of the style in German cinema of expressionism.

Maybe it's me being a bit precious here but I don't like that Team Bondi is actually not getting much of the credit here of the achievement L.A Noire is. Rockstar North or any other branch didn't develop it. Rockstar didn't do anything again. They published a title with more depth and focus in story than what they usually do by someone else.

Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old sod.

I feel the same.
It was bad enough that most gamers didn't realize the team mostly responsible for 'Red Dead Redemption' had never before worked on a 'Grand Theft Auto' title. But now a game has been released that, as far as I know, was not developed in any capacity by a Rockstar team, and Team Bondi's work goes either completely overlooked or at least criminally underappreciated.

All I know is I'm loving it, and I can actually sit down and turn it on and KNOW that I will be playing an honest to God NEW EXPERIENCE because nothing like this has ever been attempted before and frankly I'm surprised there is so much skepticism around the game.

Not to mention for the most part it shines like an exclusive on PS3.

Without multiplayer a game in today's society is looked down upon by many gamers, which is sad, but true. So, I don't think L.A. Noire will sell as much as Red Dead, but I sure as hell bought it.

i dont think it will cause to me it appeals to the older adult demographic kinda how heavy rain was. my 14 year old nephew was going to get it and i told him it isn't like gta or saints row were you can go around shooting people etc, that its more base off doing the investigation/mission for the story and he said well thats sucks and stupid. so clearly i dont think people of the younger generation will care much for it, unless it has similarity to how gta,rdr,saints row etc. i think it will do well for about a month than eventually die off. from what ive played so far, it really needs more things to keep you still playing. imo the only things to do really is Main story and radio police calls that's really it. it needs things such as being able to actually go into more places, have mini games like pool, overall more things to interact with.

It's definitely a breath of fresh air in gaming...a real groundbreaker. It's not without it's faults buuuut with some gamer feedback the next one could be 10+!

It can/will appeal to a much broader demographic than R* is used to if we can just get the word out. I can see girls enjoying playing this one(my 18 y/0 daughter loves it!) She sits and watches me play it nightly. She's a big help with the interrogations and interviews...something females seem to have a knack with. Ya know the whole intuition thing.

I love it...my GOTY vote will be going to this I'm sure. Then again i'm a 43 y.o man that can appreciate the atmosphere of the game, the cerebral aspect (no offense young uns). It's like controlling an old black and white whodunnit one of my favorite movie genres. jmho
