Modern Warfare 3 Debuts With A Bang

The battle lines have been drawn. Come this holiday season, the shooter war will commence.

One of the combatants will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 but up until now, we hadn't seen anything besides a quick teaser trailer. Now we've got the first great look at MW3: Activision has released the debut trailer, which you can see when watching the NBA Conference Finals tonight.

It confirms the previously leaked release date of November 8, and it also confirms Sledgehammer's involvement, one of Activision's internal studios. They'll be co-developing this one along with Modern Warfare gurus Infinity Ward. And without any further delay:

Yes, it's the outbreak of World War III and players will visit many of the world's biggest cities. The video shows combat in places like Manhattan and Paris, and both London and Germany appear to be on the slate as well. Last but not least is the voice of antagonist Vladimir Makarov:

"It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict...just the will of a single man."

Let the craziness begin.

Im actually kind of impressed with the "updated" engine. Im not going to get too exited yet, but I have the feeling with three studios working on it, IW is focusing more on the SP than usual. Because of the way MW2 ended I knew right away I had to get MW3 to see what happens next.

Nah but seriously. The trailer is good, I just hope reviewers do their job this time and are honest that its the same game as the others. We all know this game is gonna turn out that way...

I think your comment increases my knowledge of a growing gap between CoD lovers and haters. There once existed a middle part where people would buy it, like it but not love it.

Now it's either really love it or really hate it. Activision has successfully created a new war between two factions in reality, CoD lovers and CoD haters. I try to maintain my neutral stance as best I can. :)

That actually looked better than I anticipated. I'm actually very very interested in this all of a sudden, simply because those scenes are representative of the single player experience. Here are some great things I gathered from that trailer that almost makes me want to get this day 1... almost:

- Smooth animations, and pretty good looking physics, even if it isn't as realistic as Frostbite 2 engine

- Conflict in the most popular cities throughout the world, New York, London, Belgium, Paris... all that's missing is Tokyo, Miami, Sydney and Johannessburg, then all the great iconic cities of the world would be covered. Great settings shown off in the trailer.

- The return of the fly-over cannon, blasting enemies, vehicles and even buildings from a powerful gun in the air, just like in CoD 4!! A welcome return.

- Destructible environments. Finally!! If the trailer is anything to go by, you might be able to level entire buildings in the process, which would be pretty awesome.

- Diving and satchel planting from MW2 is back, and is an excellent level to help break up the monotony of running and gunning all the time.

- Vehicle levels making a return. Shame we don't have full control over them and the physics are pretty unrealistic, but that's what Battlefield 3 is for, right?

All in all, I'm pretty impressed. If the campaign is longer than 7 hours from CoD 4, I might just be tempted to get this just to see how it all ends. Multiplayer doesn't interest me that much, especially if it's the same as previous entries, but Battlefield 3's multiplayer certainly has me interested, especially if it's as big and as fun as the multiplayer in Bad Company 2.

I'll wait for more details, then make a decision as to whether or not it's worth getting. Great trailer for the fans and casual shooter lovers though! Very glad I traded Black Ops recently in anticipation for this. Black Ops was good, had more bells and whistles than MW2 and W@W and even CoD4, but lacked in some of the basics, like control, spawning problems, unfair advantages for Killstreak winners like getting constant rounds of Napalm and bombing the enemy spawn points, etc etc... all very annoying.

They did have a Spec Ops mission in MW2 where you got to use an AC130, but just not in the storyline.

And yeah, when I got sick of how terrible the Black Ops online was I traded it in for $40 Gamestop credit.

ell I'd like to say I am not on the anti-COD band wagon but I have to say it, well interesting, was rather underwhelming.

Sure some parts seemed awesome but I am pretty sure it will end up like MW2 and just be a thread of a plot tying together set pieces. The 'new' engine, well better, isn't that amazing either.

Overall it seems like it will keep the fanboys attached and I won't waste my precious cash on it. I need it for Uncharted.

On a side note and to be a bit anal how the hell does Russia organize, invade, and destroy every country in a matter of a few days after the random terrorist attack?

I have a feeling it'll be like other CoD advertisements where the commercials make the game look so much better than it really is.

But like I said in my previous comment, if the campaign is longer, more varied and fun, I might just be tempted to check it out. As much as I hate the multiplayer of CoD games, there's no denying its entertainment value for the single player lovers. If only it were longer and DLC included more chapters and story rather than stupidly expensive MP maps. Never bought a single map ever, and I don't plan to.

Ha, I believe Crysis currently holds the title for highest syatem requirements in a PC game (higher than Crysis 2) and games really only push the graphics card not my Quad-core CPU. I'd be surprised if an ATI 6990 graphics card couldn't run Battlefield 3 at max settings in 1080p. Of course the full resolution of a 30" PC monitor might be a different story, but doesn't matter because my 42" tv only does 1080p anyway.

a quad core couldnt get out of its own way to run Crysis 2.

There is a reason why that series sets the standards and a 4 year old chipset isnt going to do it.

Besides, if you want to play an fps on a PC, you should make it worth while. 3 monitors is what you will need.

YAWN, oh goodie another AC130 mission from MW1. CoD recycling parts from past games?! Unheard of! Regardless, the graphics really aren't all that impressive. Those are more than likely 360 graphics and this "updated" engine is nonexistent. The developers have publicly stated they will not update/upgrade the engine. So MW3 boasts bigger maps and destructible environments?

What game started doing that? Battlefield: Bad Co. 1, back in 2008. So too little, too late.

If you really want to be impressed check out the Battlefield 3 trailers, yes in PC format but they won't be scaled down completely for consoles. DICE one-upped the CoD Dev's with Frostbite 2.0. FB2 offers; Some of if not the best sound design offered in a FPS, the most real and genuine physics and animations, an impressive arsenal, vehicular combat, REAL tactical destruction, and the better bigger maps.

You can let this 1:29 minute trailer hypnotize you that this is fresh, hip, and action packed when its more of the same CoD that you have wasted money on for years. I absolutely refuse to waste money on an expansion like MW2.5. Battlefield 3, like Bad Co. 2 will prove itself critically, and technically as the top Military FPS of 2011.

Deny it all you want, Bad Co. 2 was the TOP M-FPS of 2010 that was voted by many gaming publications. PSXE included.

If im honest BIGRED its what makes this game popular. It being casual. most people arent full (hardcore, whatever you want) gamers. To enjoy the best of a field you have to be into it.
For me to enjoy the best of the comic book world i have to be into it. Im not, thats why i think spiderman is awesome (he is :P) and deadpool seems pretty cool but i know little about him and arent interested enough to find out.
Most people dont get the best of the games because they arent interested enough. They enjoy the stuff thats in their face, easily digestible. Thats why racing titles and rockband/GH and football games are things people often have (at least with the people im at). They like COD are pick up n play. the better shooter will most likely be BBC3, but its not as in your face and pick up and play and casual for the casual gamer.

The problem isnt COD, the problem is not enough of the best stuff being pushed into the limelight.
You hear in the media, COD sold a bajillion dollars, not Uncharted 2s graphics are so stunning you get lost in the pictures. Given there are reasons for that, one being the 'most people want it casual, not after the extreme quality in said pastime/activity' and two, its not as big news, and doesnt sell. Good grpahics dont affect the stock market. Sales do.

HEY! I know what the next big thing after COD will be guys! COD hating! Hell I'm gonna open up a specialized COD hater forum right now! I can make some big bucks while also making PSXE a better place.

I hope you realize how stupid it is to hate a videogame series. I don't hate Viva Pinata or other children's games but would I buy them in a million years? Hell no. C'mon guys grow up a little bit.

you seem to have a problem with people expressing negative opinions/expectations about the game...

Some things you just need to let slide, because you won't change a person's opinion about it especially with somewhat snide remarks

Yeah.. But that's only because I don't think we need to have a major conflict about it. Seriously if you're not interested in COD, why read an article about it and post a negative comment when you know it's not productive in any way and only attracts the wrong kind of attention from people who enjoy COD. Somehow I don't believe those flamer-type comments are any good here.

you do realize that this is what the comment sections are for right? its not meant to be one big orgy of gamers who are CoD fans where those who don't like it arent allowed to post. Same goes for any other game

The reason why they may have read the article is because its a sight that they tend to read often. Would you like it if you weren't allowed to post ur negative opinions about a game you don't like?

Well I don't believe I've ever read an article on Halo before, and I don't pay much attention to games I don't care for, unless of course I bought the particular title and didn't like it (especially in the comments for a game review). I think what you're talking about is better for dicussions in forums not arguments/flame wars on comments for an article. Even I don't mind in the comments if you say you don't really like it but you shouldn't be insulting the one's who enjoy the game or get very abusive in general.

Well he is over reaching his opinion as complete fact and he basically calls COD fans cows being herded into something that is apparently one of man's worst creations. He has never even owned a COD game and yet attacks it. Why?

If you express your distaste in a reasonable manner then I think it's great but there shouldn't be all the "Absolute pure ready to use any kind of verbal assault to assert" kind of hatred in the comments.

I'll also say I kind of do consider being called a casual gamer to be somewhat derogatory. It kind of implies that I like to play Bejeweled and Tetris and such. But of course what you may not realize is that the vast majority of PC gamers consider all console gamers to be 'casual gamers'.

I think youre confusing this with youtube comments.
We're not randomly bashing some unrelated bullshhht for no reason.
This is an article about COD.
Therefore we talk about our opinions on COD.

Yeah no need to go apecrazy and bash the hell out of it, but if it gets your knickers in a twist feel free to say why. Then if you disagree with what that persons said, say something well reasoned and constructive and dont go crazy like a little 8 year old fanboy as weve seen people do.

Its called an opinion, and guess what, everyones allowed to have one. And if its relative to the discusion, say it. Stop complaining about peoples opinions

You going after every single person who doesn't like CoD sort of personifies this HOLD the franchise has over certain people. In that way, you're not really helping get rid of the stereotype of the typical addicted CoD casual player...you're only supporting that theory.

Are you hyped for this game Ben? Because I know I'm not fosho. Not saying it's a bad game, just re-proving one more time that I'm not into that type of game(s). Just shooting everything, no story wise-developed, just run forward, kill everything, did I said shoot everything?? I just don't like to spend my money in that type of games. In fact, I just purchased (Iknow I know, too late, but still) Heavy Rain, and Fallout New Vegas, so you can imagine why I don't like to spend money in Call of Duty, and never will.

And once more proving what once you said: We are an endangered species. Wish me luck in my journey thru Heavy Rain and Fallout New Vegas. I know fosho I'll have a blast :)

I just hope that when this game comes out, all reviewers including Ben, score the game after at least two weeks from the games release.

Black Ops scored really high when it released extremely broken, at least on the PS3 anyway. Some of them issues still haven't been fixed to this day. BTW I'm mostly referring to the multiplayer side of the game.

Had any other game come out the fence with the amount of connection problems Black Ops came out with, that were never fully fixed, I doubt that game would of scored anywhere near the score BO scored.

I completely agree that most MP games have problems that need ironing out on release, but BO never felt fixed despite the numerous patches.

I'd rather wait a couple of weeks for the games review, so the reviewer can experience the frustration BO caused. Or at least the promise to revise a review score once the game is deemed to be at the best the Devs believe they can achieve.

I really think that Modern Warfare 3 will be a good game despite finding CoD overhyped and overrated in general. But will it win against Battlefield 3? Not a chance in hell.

Oh, and 8th November is my birthday. I'll be playing UC3 by that time and will be looking forward to Revelations, BF3 and Skyrim at the time. I still feel CoD unworthy of my time, unless Ben says otherwise.

Well its completely official, "somethingrandom" is our new CoD fanboy. The article made me want to read it from the header, and I wanted to see what all the buzz was about. And, this seals the deal on my definitely not thinking twice of paying for the same game this year. I wanted to type my opinion on the matter and its highly negative because people support the same game over and over and over again. Its sad really, Activision could slap a few new skins, locations, and weapons on because its a whole "new game".

Did you notice parts of the same missions? Or the exact SAS character models used in the England segment? Where did I see those character models before? MW1! Don't get me wrong, MW1 is AWESOME. But everything else is mediocre. Oh how many copies did it sell? That irrelevant. Activision tapped perfectly into the casual trendy gamer market.

Zorigo,

You know regardless all the "cool" kids will buy MW3 even if it scores lower than Crap Ops. So in fact Activision will make a killing, but I thought MW2 wasn't very ugly, I mean its no Killzone but it looked decent for a multiplat.

I tried Crap Ops multiplayer at a friends house quite a few times when everyone else was playing and I just thought it was terrible. The same unbalanced weapons, connection issues, horrible graphics, and some of the most game breaking bugs I have ever unfortunately witnessed.

Now with Bad Co. 2 MP, it it always fun. There is nothing like massive tank battles, or taking down a chopper with an tank. Just solid, bug free MP compared to CoD.

MW2 did look good, but when i say stellar i mean that there are games (killzone 3 etc) that are so much more polished youd think for a huge seller theyd try and make it look better. They have the money and dont seemed to have changed the basics so it should look more polished.
And Blops multiplayer was rather bad. i played it a couple of times and it didnt hold out well at all. MW2 had issues but i didnt feel they were game breaking. Im saying i wanna see which multiplayer is more enjoyable and if MW3 feels ruined like blops did, then i wont buy it.

Hey somethingrandom,
thanks for changing my post (sarcasm). Getting rid of the word PIG, doesn't disqualify the fact that cod is and has been a money pig. There is and has always been a ton of speculation as to weather activision cares about the fans (we were all wondering what the heck they were up to when they started the annual installment of a release, when it truely deserves to be a title that is released every other year.) Look, Cod4, awesome, WAW, awesome (zombies mainly) I havent always hated cod. You can call me a d*ck or what haveyou for speaking about cod the way it is, but my opinion should have little to no effect on you. I have grown to be distainful of COD, for select reasons:

1) Activision, never liked them because of their disregard for quality in comparison to other developer. (just look at all the idiotic movie based games they've developed) They look at it as solely a monetary opportunity (Now thats not to say they dont make decent games, but I have yet to own one)Now that they have COD in their grasp... well... it'll be hard to tell if COD can stay afloat with their ownership

2)MW2, MW3, Black ops are extremely similar. I've played all cods on next gen, and in my opinion, they havent changed hardly at all. With that being said, why is it that they decide to stagnate while other devs are really working to push the quality and technicality of the industry to its peak. Imo, DICE devs are right, cods getting lazy, and still get tons of cash for it. I dont respect that mindset at all.

3) I know you probably havent had this happen before, but you ever tried to tell a COD junkie that there are indeed better more wholesome shooters out there? They look at ya like you got three heads, its ridiculous. I take pride in gaming ive been playing games long before COD was even a thought, so to see people choose to disregard everything but COD is truely dissappointing, but never once have I told those people that their opinion sucks. I feel the need to educate the casual gamer more often than not, but at the end of the day, opinions are opinions and they wont change, its just a shame that to many COD is the only casual game when really, many games can be considered casual and even better (uncharted 2 is a perfect example)

Wow, that was terrible. Not the set-pieces, those were okay, but the graphics and destruction system looked like crap. I know its only a debut trailer, but it just doesn't look good.

I have to admit though, flipping the first W in WW3 to be the M in MW3 is good marketing. And the music was pretty good for this kind of trailer. But that's about all I like the look/sound of at all.
