SCEA E3 2011 Press Conference: A Whopping 5 Hours

Um...well, maybe there's a lot to talk about.

Normally, E3 conferences will run a few hours, which in our estimation is plenty long enough. A company will start with the boring financial stuff, move on to the slightly more interesting projects and new game titles, and end things with a bang (or a series of consecutive bangs). Last year, Sony finished with that epic Twisted Metal announcement, the one that saw Sweettooth's ice cream truck on stage. So what can we expect this year? That's anyone's guess, but we do know it'll be 5 hours long. On the invitation to SCEA's E3 2011 press conference, it clearly shows the location (Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena), date and time:

June 06, 2011

5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.

Ooookay. If attendees are gonna be sitting that long, Sony better have a gigantic slate. Obviously, you can expect more official replies and apologies for the recent Network unpleasantness, but we can't imagine that this unforeseen addition to the conference would add several hours.

So yeah, next Monday just...get comfortable.

I'm guessing they have alot of new exclusives and features and programmes to announce? I mean that's the only logical thing I can think of that would need 5 hours.

well, i had a strong feeling twisted metal would appear last yrear despite jafee's attempts to say it would not be twisted metal. the real surprise was gabe.

5hrs is a long time. they will surely address the psn outage and probably apologize again. then show off the ngp. that still leaves a long time. ps3 price cut.

i'm actually very interested in the boring finincial stuff. i want to know sony's exact place in the console war. what's their marketshare versus last gen? i'm very interested in their na console sales since they seem to struggle here in na. maybe that battle is already lost, but i at least hope they have closed the gap against the 360 here.

anyways, i hope they have something spectacular up their sleeves.

You guys are kidding right, about the whole only real gamers own both consoles? You guys have to be because thats completely and totally naive. Ive only ever *owned* a playstation console. In the last 10 years ive owned over 80 games. but the games ive played outside of sony exclusives probably doubles the ones ive owned. Let me redefine what a real gamer actually is: Its someone who plays anything, someone who dabs into any and every kind of game. Ive played on all last gen consoles, super nintendo, N64, all current gen consoles. I have quite the spectrum of played games under my belt. I only own a PS3 but does that make me a fanboy, no, I have a preference, but that preference is more unbiased than any ordinary fanboy's would be. Saying someone isnt a gamer just because of a preference when in all actuality most of them have been gaming for years is ridiculous and irrational

Here's to Sony dropping one bombshell after another.

Sony needs to figure out why it's not having the success in the United States, and address it.

With the PS3's library, there is not one logical reason as to why the PS3 isn't selling more consoles.

i absolutely agree with your sentiments about sony needing to figure out why its not having success here in na. i know that's not a popular topic here, but something is wrong. i think it's a combination of the ps3's initial bad impression at luanch, and the view that live is so superior.

i get a little disheartened here in na surrounded by 360's. it's almost unbeliavable how much marketshare sony has lost here considering how popular the ps1, and ps2 were. they need to address it, or they're always going to be fighting an uphill battle.

sony has an image problem here in na concerning the ps3. there is no other logical reason to explain it.

I believe you nailed it with your assessment on on how the PS3 is perceived.

Way to many people out there have a bias towards the PS3 from it's launch. I also blame the media outlets like IGN and Kotaku for the PS3's continued struggles in the US.

I was once a 360 exclusive gamer, and once I bought the PS3, I will never go back. What XBox Live offers is not that much better then the PSN, and surely isn't worth $60 bucks a year.

i assure you that you do not have to own both consoles to be a real gamer. some people just prefer the ps3 and feel no need to own a 360. there is nothing wrong with that.

Do you need all systems to call yourself a gamer? Hell no. However you can expand your gaming experience if you own all 3.

If you don't own a 360..you should..if you can find one for a low price. Nobody would be disappointed with Alan Wake or Gears of War.

Either way you're not missing out on anything as a gamer other then the mentioned franchises.

If there isn't anything else on the other console that doesn't interest you I don't see why you would buy a 360 in the first place.

People have different tastes in games/consoles just like I prefer my PS3 over the 360, none of the games on the 360 interest me, neither Halo or Gears, and I'm not interested in Alan Wake. The PS3 has all the games that interest me, it might seem bias to you but that's how preferences work, it's just that people either don't like your choice of how you like to play or what you like and start calling you names because you don't own all the consoles or don't agree on something.

Why jump ship when all you need for games is in one place? It wouldn't make any sense. The only games on the 360 that interest me is Mass Effect, and Bioshock, those are on the PS3 as well but not Mass Effect 1.

That wouldn't be logical to buy a console for 1 or 2 games because of that.

People have choices, no need to tell them they aren't a real gamer or not because of the choice they picked. A real gamer to me plays any games no matter what genre they are, not many are able to have multiple consoles, but that doesn't make them less of a gamer in my books. They are dedicated to that console and what it has to offer.

yes, i've seen it and it's pretty amazing. i liked the trailer featuring the repair shop with the RROD symbol on top. nice jab at the 360's infamaous hardware problems.

That was awesome. It was also to see the newish Cole in the classic jacket. Plus the beast looks like it will be awesome.

no way it's going to be 5 hours, that has to be a typo. I would love it if it was 5 hours though. every time I watch E3 i spend the first hour really enjoying it then the next hour sad that it's getting closer to the end.

I highly doubt that, but 5 hours, if thats indeed correct, sony should steal the show no problem, regardless of the PSN goof up. but i have to feel that an extra 5 hours? What kind of filler are they going to use? Usually the conference takes around 3 hours, and we all know the great deal of exclusives coming out, but I assume they'll need to talk a great deal about the NGP but there will still be a lot of time left even after the games and tech are revealed for NGP and PS3 Maybe there is just a whole other slew of PS3 exclusives we have yet to hear about. I'd be ok with that.

Ben, do you know if this event will be open to the public and not just media? i ask only because the L.A. sports arena is a big place just to hold a conference, instead of it's usual place at the Shrine Auditorium.

Their probably gonna talk alot about the NGP, and the ton of games coming out for it. They have the playstation phone and the features and games for that. The original psp might have a hours worth of content also, then I guess the ps3 got the finally.

Then they probably gonna talk about the hacking, maybe tell us about the new servers they made...

Who airs this show? Is there a web site I can watch it live from?

five hours is a long time, apologies wont last long. A lot of news, features and games coming our way.

I'm looking forward to this. And a "hoard" of exclusives sounds amazing! Maybe we can finally get all the games we loved playing in the early PSX days. Fingers crossed. :)
