Russell Quits Uncharted Movie Due To "Creative Differences"

Naughty Dog has made it clear in the past: they don't want Hollywood to ruin their award-winning Uncharted franchise.

For a while, things appeared to be going well for the film adaptation, set to be directed by David O. Russell and starring Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. But now, according to a recent Variety report, Russell has abandoned the project due to "creative differences" with Sony. Apparently, the split was "amicable;" it's just that Sony and Russell didn't agree on the movie's course. Now, though, they'll have to start from scratch with a new director and a new writer, so Wahlberg (and any other cast members Russell may have already nailed down) could be gone, too. The question is, what do the gamers think? Based on what we had heard in the past, maybe they won't be so devastated...

The details may have been sketchy and even downright inaccurate, but much of the info for the "Uncharted" film just didn't seem to jive with the game. Maybe we don't need a movie at all.

Except he wasn't the casting director. He was the film director. He may have had influence, but it isn't primarilly his job.

Apparently you didn't hear what he wanted to do with the movie. Trying to make it all soprano esque and stuff... Sorry that's not what we want to see uncharted portrayed as in Hollywood! That's not even close to what Uncharted is about.

The Fighter was great, but he wanted to change everything about Uncharted. Not only is that not cool, his ideas sucked and he seemed to know nothing about the game even thought claimed to have played it a lot with his kids.

I don't know anything about Mafia/family changes or anything else he wanted, but I know he's better than some second-rate director typical of video game movies.

Nobody said he's not a good director... He was simply taking the movie putting the Uncharted name on it, taking the characters, but changing the source material. He was abandoning the whole heart and soul of what makes Uncharted, Uncharted.

He is/was NOT meant for this project.

That's great news! Between all the BS the guy was saying about Drake being in the mafia and how he was such a big fan of the games, it was clear he didn't have the best interests of the fans (and ND) in mind. I'm glad they finally ran him off.

Now all Sony has to do is find someone in Hollywood who actually cares enough to try and make a faithful/good adaptation of the game and we'll be all set.

Good point... I don't know who comes to mind personally though. Gore Verbinski did great with the pirate movies making them action oriented but fantasy was still in tact, as well as humor and believable characters. That my opinion though I know most people think otherwise of the movies. I don't know though really who could do the games justice. Might as well get the game development staff to do the movie! ;)

But I completely agree we need a director with those traits, hands down!

Indeed, I think that Uncharted would be best served by an adventure movie with some of the light-hearted fun of the Indiana Jones series. No sense in going all hardcore action or crime or all dark and ominous on us. This is a video game, so let's have a movie people can have fun with. For that matter, let's have a movie that can be seen by teens without worry, so that they can be prompted to buy the next Uncharted game...

There has already been a story written that Sony liked according to one source:

http://www.latinoreview.com/news/director-david-o-russell-abandons-uncharted-drake-s-fortune-film-13716
"Scriptwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer wrote the first draft of the script, in which Sony is “still very high on.”

I wouldn't mind them grabbing Jon Favreau if he is available

I cant understand why anyone would think an uncharted movie would be a good idea. The special thing about uncharted is that it makes you feel like you're playing a blockbuster movie, a stand alone movie would be a lesser experience.

i was no fan of where russell was taking the story for the film, but at least he was a good director. now, who knows who we will end up with. paul w.s. anderson? just kidding. he's busy working on the 3 musketeers and resident evil.

as for walhberg...i'm not sure he was the best fit for this movie, but i don't think fillion is a big enough name.

i will wait to cheer russell's departure once we here who the new director is.

I hope they just abandon the entire movie making idea. Not just Naughty Dog but the entire game business. Let the directors do what they are good at, writing movie scripts, and the game makers focus on what they do best: Making games. I do understand the value of spin-offs, but bah - there's still so much uncharted territory within the game format itself, these movies are just unnecessary diversions imo.

Getting rid of Russel and Wahlberg were the only possible ways of bringing my attention back to this movie. Never have I seen a worst casting choice than Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. Russell's 'ideas' for the Drake storyline were equally terrible, and unnecessary. Good riddance, I say.

Russell has left his last 2 movies now. I sure hope investors realize this before ever making any deals with him in the future.

Follow the plot, or don't make the movie. Period. We don't need some no talent jerkweed coming in and rewriting that which we ENJOYED ALREADY. It's like the turd that is 'Legend of the Seeker', when compared to the actual books (Sword of Truth series, Terry Goodkind).

At least Uncharted has been temporarily saved.

I don't know, I think Wahlberg is just a poor poor fit for the film. I think he was chosen on name recognition and not what he could bring to Nathan Drake. I'll agree the other choices sounded terrible too, no argument there. However, the movie's about Drake, so he's the one we're going to see most of the time, and if Wahlberg is what we see the entire movie...it's already going the wrong way.
