Does Modern Warfare 3 Deserve To Dominate Headlines?
From a news standpoint, I'm not sure any game really deserves to dominate the headlines in any given year, considering that in terms of actual news, most titles get the same amount of exposure. Each gets official press releases for a variety of different reasons and of course, each has advertising, which is separate from news and opinion articles.
The question is, does Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 deserve all the attention it will receive throughout 2011? Is it enough that it'll be the most popular game of the year? Is it a straight-up correlation? In other words, should the game that sells the most be most common in the world of gaming journalism? This is an even more interesting question when one considers the massive casual market for MW3; the fact that a great many CoD fans simply don't care about what's written. They're gonna buy the game Day 1 no matter what, yes?
And what is there to talk about, really? The game certainly doesn't have more content than other titles; it doesn't feature revolutionary elements (at least, we're pretty sure it doesn't) and in general, we all have a good idea what to expect. Essentially, I'm concerned that the majority of MW3 headlines that exist this year will be borderline useless: they'll either be based on the game's immense popularity and whether or not it's deserving of that recognition, or any number of unsubstantiated rumors that always revolve around high-profile titles. At the end of the day, we know it'll sell. We know what it is. We know millions want it.
But is there enough substantial information to justify the number of MW3 headlines we're going to see? ...I think not.

This gen because of online play, i can imagine kids say to each other, right we'll all get MW3 so we can all play 2gether on the internet.
This is the big difference, everyone wants the same game as everyone else, so the one thats most popular, is the one that everyone gets, regardless of if Killzone/battlefield/medalofhonour is any better.

Games that feature zombies;
Left 4 Dead.
Dead Space
Dead Rising
Dead Island (coming soon)
Killing Floor
Red Dead Redemption - DLC
Resident Evil
For a complete list of games that are far better than COD Zombies, search for 'List of zombie video games' in Wikipedia.
My least favorite-yet-still-better-than-COD zombie game is CarnEvil, which is a lightgun game for the good ol' arcade.

I wish they didn't take this path. After putting so much attention and getting so much enjoyment out of COD4:MW, I expected a lot more out of their following installments. But.. they came to disjointed. I remember when I was going to pick up MW2 on day one, the hype was just seen every where, people talking about it at school. It was just ridiculous.
As It got closer and closer to its release and the hypes started getting to it's boil point, I kept getting less and less interested. After seeing more and more nameplay and hearing more about the game. I opted out of a day one purchase, then never got it.
I ended up playing it at a cousins and I was glad I didn't pick it up.
And since then a COD game has just been a diss. It does not deserve this kind of attention! It's old! COD would be great back in 2007, it was But it didn't change since and video games have improved so much since then. And how come COD is praised like it's the #1 game? It's not! There are games out there that deserve these sells and attention. Games that have such great gameplay and tech behind them.
When will people, gamers see the value in theses game that deserve it?
I hope these COD fans, "gamers" if that is what they are, Will wake up. These devs that been pumping out yearly versions of the same game for these past few years need to realize that gamers care about there games, improvement, more then "copy and pasting" more then Online, an actual champagne, more then just new perks, more then just mew maps, we want to see new tech going into the game, new characters added to the additional ones, new features, new options.
^ This is what a real gamer wants. COD has been giving us nothing lately. And it won't until the consumers let them know it. I really hope MW3 will be an awesome game. I do. It's just the people who go crazy over it. heck you guys rob a game store for these games, spend endless hours too prestige, ruining relationships with loved ones too play only with a guy you will never meet in you life, in a dark room all day killing your health, and that's not it It's the way you guys talk, yelling and screaming at a screen. I don't understand you guys. That's not gaming, not a true gamer.
That's enough preaching. But It's BF3 for me and will somebody please explain how all this started!!!?!!! It's sad..

I'm sorry, but CoD is a franchise that I simply can't stomach. I'll give credit where credit is due (and I have done so with CoD), and I'll admit that there is decent quality in the SP, but it is sadly lacking in so many ways. I see no reason why such mediocrity deserves to be as popular as it is, especially when the key selling point, the multiplayer, is downright stupid. There is nothing to it whatsoever, and that irritates me.
And from what I've seen, the campaign of MW3 is looking to cut out any sensibility and moments of slow burn in favour of frenetic, Michael Bay styled action from start to finish. How can anyone even stand such nonsense?
When the developers implement a decent story that can actually be followed by anyone with anything more than half a brain, rather than catering to their core demographic of red cordial wired 12 year olds and drunk, dope-smoking college idiots, then I'll pay attention.
When the developers show that they deserve the sales and praise by offering a more thoughtful and tactical experience over balls to the wall action, then I'll pay attention.
When the developers actually push the envelope of SOMETHING other than my f*cking patience and show that they truly can deliver an experience that delivers on the promise of the ridiculous popularity, then I'll pay attention.
When the developers finally manage to craft an experience that appeals to me on any but the most base level... then I'll pay attention, but until that day... CoD means NOTHING to me.
Give me Resistance for the story, Battlefield for the technical spectacle and Operation Flashpoint for the tactical realism. But don't give me CoD. Not now, and not EVER!
/rant and Peace!

with the success this series has established with fun & finance profit i just hope developers with more depth behind there games dont change there approach just to recieve the results MW does.
dont get me wrong MW is a TRILL online experience but the core of what makes a game COD doesnt offer its not 1 COD MW i have & i replayed it cause the story was deep.

Why do Big Brother make you a celebrity?
Why do no citizen in the EU *really* understand what EU is all about?
Media is like that. They do not cover the real world, they cover our fantasies. As long as enough of us *really* want to see pictures of the royal family the papers will use every thinkable excuse to post "news" about them. As long as enough want to read about how Ken shagged Billy in Big Brother they will become celebrities.
But does MW3 deserve to dominate headlines? That's all a question of perspective. They are in a position where the headlines will be clicked on, and articles commented. Even here in psxe where a majority claims they have *no* interest (and reclaim that, over and over and over and over again :D)! The stories with most comments are usually about mw! While a new IP (who I personally think is *far* more interesting to read about) gets a fraction of comments.

im so sure what the answer will be, ill bet the house on it!
me though, that depends.
IF its going to be different, and as good as it looks and as good as im hoping it to be then yes.
they need all the media hype they can get, to prove to people like 99% of the people here, the games changed.
people seem to be stuck in this mindset the last game was like this, so its 100% impossiable for the new one to be different!
hell look at AC2, everyone you talk to trying to convince them to buy it refuses because they say the last was so repetitive so AC2 has to be also.
because of course its impossible for games to change!
rolls eyes!
so IF its as fresh and good as im hoping then yea, if not then move along people theres nothing to see here!
which am i expecting?
hard to say, one would assume after seeing BF3, and all the other amazing games this year, antivision would of had to step up its game.
but then we would of said the same thing about MW2, so i guess anythings possible!
lets not count it out before we get to see some proper details on it ay?
i mean how much do you want to bet that everyone here would be foaming at the mouths if this was a ps3 exclusive?

But I believe you are right in that many around here would quite possibly had an entirely different opinion about mw3 had it been exclusive to the ps3. I even think that goes without saying.
When sucky exclusives like SOCOM 4 gets a respected, kind treatment it pretty much says it all.

If it was a PS3 exclusive itd be a toootally diff story.
But its not, and therefore we look at it as is.

Does it deserve it? Not really, there's nothing particularly ground breaking or 'must-have' about the title. At this point CoD's just a name they can slap on a box and expect to net millions in sales week 1.

Best online experience this gen? Don't make me laugh. It isn't the best on ANY console.
360 has Halo and Gears. Both better. PS3 has KZ2 and KZ3 along with countless other titles. All better. PC has MANY--- MANY better games. PC Gamer gave MW2 a 6.4/10 review, for perspective.
There are multiplayer multi-plats that are better multiplayer experiences as well.
McDonalds has billions and billions sold, apparently. You can't tell me that's the best dining experience of our generation.
If you ask me... people here just know how to look at shit and see shit. That's not hypocrisy.

For me, I didn't start realizing how bad it was until I started playing it more and more. It seemed like the more time I put in, the more problems I found. If I based my opinion on just a tiny amount of time, I would probably say they are great games. When you experience it in it's entirety, however, it's painfully obvious how low it's quality is in comparison to it's perceived quality.

It's strengths are it's accessibility and popularity (which only feeds into it's furthered popularity, oddly enough!). I would honestly love it more if it wasn't for the terrible glitchiness it has. Also, I don't feel like it has much extended support from the devs which removes the chance they'll improve on inevitable issues. The experience is often ruined due to technical issues for me. Which is a BIG shame. As is, I just can't accept it as a quality multiplayer title compared to others.

But I'm sure it's popular because of it's popularity is what I'm saying. I don't think the online community is that valuable at all. I spend most of my time between matches muting half the kids in there. And when you compare the online community to something like MAG where people are more likely to communicate in a meaningful way, I just don't see it as being a quality online community.
Sure, it's a big community, but that doesn't mean it's a good one.
As for me, although I found them short, I actually enjoyed the single player more than multiplayer. As long as MW3 has good single player, you can bet I'll likely at least rent the game. I've moved on from it's multiplayer though. Haven't played CoD since January.

the reasons i dislike cod is that it's paired with xbox live and the 360. it has become some kind of social phenenom amongst that group. they say it plays best on the 360, and it really does. that tremendous crowd of gamers will line up for day1 purchases on that game and system driving sales to record numbers,
a spectacu;lar shooter that i feel is far better than cod is kz3. it's sales are even weaker than the lower than expected sales of kz2. kz3 is spectacular but amazingly short. still the multiplayer is pretty great and they fixed the controls.
why can't kz be a blockbuster title? it's got the graphics, and most importantly the gameplay down. maybe if they add vehicles.
what's the problem?
i'm very interested to see what uc3 week one sales wil be. is the playstation userbase a group that sets back and waits for price drops on day1p types of games? uc2 saes did not evev chart for the 1st 20 weeks it was out. at last that what wiki said. sales on popular ps3 exclusives should do better, as a ps3 owner there is really no excuse not to buy uc3 day1, right? or as soon as you can afford it.
the only reason cod gets the headlines and respect is the money it has earneed.
