Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Set For PS3 And Xbox 360

Is it possible not to have this in a video game collection?

Konami and Kojima Productions have announced the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. This sweet package boasts Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, all of which will be rendered in brilliant 1080p high definition. Even some of the 2D elements in these titles will be reworked to match the new HD visuals. Furthermore, Peace Walker will be the first title to feature PS3/PSP save game interoperability, which Kojima calls "Transferring." Once you transfer a save to the PSP or PS3, the save is locked so as to prevent accidentally overwriting progress or version conflicts. If you wish to change platforms, you just have to hook your PSP and your PS3 together to transfer the save.

Now, this collection is also coming to the Xbox 360 but obviously, "Transferring" is out of the question. The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection will release for both the PS3 and 360 in November, and we're guessing it'll be on your holiday wish list. In addition, there's a Zone of the Enders HD Collection, which features both of the first two titles and gives everyone a chance to see the sci-fi insanity in awesome new high definition.

They more than certainly strong armed him into doing this for pure revenue. It's sad really. I would have rather these games stayed on their respective systems on the brand they belong, then be sold out to M$ for a quick buck. No doubt why Kojima was so depressed. At least we can keep the sanctity of MGS1 to ourselves and without it they are still missing a large piece of the MGS puzzle HAHA!!!

This is still a problem to you guys? Come on. The Playstation is in a much different position now than it was last gen. Last gen it took up a huge part of the market, mainly because it didn't have any competition at one point of it's lifetime and that paved way for more titles (and making exclusives for it became the norm). Now it seems that Microsoft learned from last gen and has a larger part of the market. The 360 is still the preference to American gamers. Times have changed guys; pretty soon they'll be no more 3rd party exclusives left

I don't approve of this myself, because it shows that developers are more more into profit than about providing good quality titles *cough* Call of Duty *cough*. They're considering the fact the 360 does better in sales in the US than the PS3. Looking at it's numbers, they're not going to just let go of a lot of potential consumers. They will think only focusing on the PS3 will keep them from earning more sales. Why else has there been so many multiplats this gen? Yes, the 360 is inferior compared to the PS3, but so is the Wii...and look at progress it make after about 5 years.

Once again a flawed argument as the MGS series has always sold better in Japan than in the US where you so say the 360 holds a stronger position (though I'm pretty sure the shift has been going in favour of SONY globally for months now). Even then it's more then one market and obviously more PS3 fans enjoy the MGS series than say the 360 fan base so another point against it. Overall the PS3 consumer demographic should be of higher priority than a Multi-system approach to an exclusive series, The fans should be treated to any remakes of their classic games that they enjoyed by being a loyal customer in the PS1 days and should be getting the HD remakes exclusively without hesitation. But in the corporate world greed overpowers loyalty and Kojima is ashamed of Konami I am sure.

What's this about 'flawed logic'? I'm saying it as it is. Yes, the PS3 is stronger globally, but it's a still a fact that the xbox still outsells it in the US. I'm not an Xbot or a fan boy but it's hard to argue against something so painfully obvious. There's no doubt that the MGS sells well in Japan, but I'm saying the company was actively looking at the 360's American fanbase and took it into consideration. That's one of the reasons why it's multiplatform. It would've been better as an exclusive imo, but they already made up their minds.

The series by and large is over anyway. There's no point in getting upset in previous titles coming to new audiences now. The journey of Snake is over now. Why not let as many people enjoy these games? Besides people there isn't just Metal Gear Solid missing but before then too. As with other series it usually ends up being opened up on other platforms after a certain point usually like this eventually no matter what. I for one am fine with it because it means people who never bothered to by a specific system for this series might actually get a chance for the first time, albeit a really incomplete way of experiencing the story. Playing ME without ME2 has nothing on this comparison.

Don't talk to me about Rising, no that is not a continuation of the series proper.

This thread became pretty unreadable quickly. Instead of rejoicing over the fact that we could play ZoE and Peace Walker in HD it turns into how mad everyone is that the games will be on 360.

This isn't MGS5 being announced multiplatform. These are 5-10 year old games being re-released for a quick buck on current consoles. The 360 versions will in no-way shape or form make the PS3 versions inferior or "dumbed down". If anything, it just means the 360 versions will have multiple discs. Not to mention MGS2: Substinence was already on the orginal Xbox. This isn't anything new, really.

Zone of the Enders was one of my favorite games on the PS2, as was MGS2. I never had a chance to play ZoE2 or MGS3 so this announcement is sweet.

Be happy you will get to play these games if you haven't. TGIF, people.

@Jimmy,
I don't know how unreadable it became, opinionated perhaps, but not unreadable. The day we see a re-mastered Halo 1 & 2 coming to the PS3 is the day I will start believing that platform exclusivity no longer matters. Until then, forgive me for thinking that platform exclusivity does in fact matter.

Your posts are never unreadable. They're very thought out, articulate, and well, opinionated, ha.

Like I said I understand the argument against multiplatform titles vs. exclusive titles for this generation (see: LA Noire losing content once it was made to fit on 360), but for HD remastered titles from previous generations of consoles? For better or worse, 3rd party exclusivity is dying (or dead) and HD "collections" are a quick way to make money without putting in all the time and money into making a brand new game.

It makes sense for Konami and I don't really get why it angers so many people. I can look over at MGS2 for my PS2 on my shelf and not think it has diminished in value because it will now be on Xbox 360.

Love the fact that Konami is introducing their 2 best series (in my opinion) of yesteryear to a broader audience. I don't know why its believed that 360 owners are less deserving of playing these games.

EXACTLY and don't forgot on Gamecube too. MGS was never exclusive to Playstation other than the titles you just mentioned. Just because the best in the series have been on Playstation doesn't make it 'Sony owned'. In fact it really started with Nintendo, but you wouldn't call it a Nintendo franchise, right?
Unless the words and symbol of Sony Computer Entertainment are on the front box, the developers can move to whatever platform they want.

@TheHighlander
How can Halo ever make it to the PS3 if it's a first party game? That's like saying Uncharted could go multiplat

yes, the series has appeared on other consoles, but how far did that take it? where did the series get its recognition? where did it get the most support? what kept pushing it forward? certainly not Nintendo and it damn sure wasn't Microsoft.

At all the MS hate stems from them (probably literally) throwing money get games. It happened with Castlevania, it happened with Resident Evil, it happened with Devil may Cry, it happened with Final Fantasy. Need i go on? But the point is, once those games went to Xbox, the quality AND content both suffered greatly. Microsoft doesn't seem to care about the affect they are having on the industry, all they care about is how much money they can make off it it.

Also, I wonder why MGS is included in the package??

Well it seemed that the the one method to play PS2 games on the PS3 became a new way to get more cash: by making them multiplatform like everything else. Maybe it would've been better if Sony just released backwards compatibility...

Well...MSG2,3, and peacewalker have never seen the PS3 or xbox 360 prior anyway so I doubt they're going to be 'dumbed down'. FFXIII is a good example of a game that suffers from being dumbs down, but remembering how Square put in a lot of effort in defending the cuts, I don't think developers who are likely to try dumbing down titles for other systems will even care.

Putting Metal Gear Solid on the Xbox is a disgrace to this franchise. Will there ever be another PS exclusive MGS?
Kojima-san should leave Konami and make his own game studio, a Sony first party studio even. I'm sure Sony won't think twice before buying his studio. He may not be able to make MGS anymore but at least he will be free to do whatever he wants and achieve his goals that is only possible on the PlayStation.

If anything there's a slight chance that MGS5 might be a PS3 exclusive. I say 'slight' because adding their previous games to the xbox 360's library can be seen as a way of 'migrating' the series to it. That's a really big deal, because it can impact future titles. But if Kojima really want his next game to surpass MGS4, he knows he needs to use every amount of technological power he can (something that can't be done with multiplatform restrictions).

You do know that Kojima is now VP of Konami. He ain't leaving anytime soon. And Kojima Productions is actually a separate studio within Konami, so a buyout isn't outside the realm of possibility. It won't happen though, due to Kojima's high standing within the parent company.

If the final fantasy remake rumour turns out to be true, I'm half expecting the announcement to be made during the 360 conference, subsequent to which that square enix CEO will march out with a broad smile on his face, as if to say "see, look how westernised we are; we are still relevant in todays gaming world".

Ironically, their increasing irrelevance has been largely self inflicted.

Well I don't think that's going to happen. Kojima just showed off his new game engine, that was built from the ground up to be multiplat.

I was watching the interview and there is a DS3, mouse, and 360 controller. He moves his hand over all three, then picks the 360 controller. I can honestly say I felt a little sad inside when he did that.

I had figured that he would pick up the DS3 to show that he still supports his fans...but no... He picked up the controller that every time I see I picture COD, Halo, and screaming fanboys...

Oh and finding out that Peace Walker is going to be on 360 almost made me cry.

So true. I don't understand all the rage, IMHO it's unjustified.
KONAMI wants and needs a quick buck and that's why they are doing this. Besides, Metal Gear hasn't been a PS exclusive. Son's of Liberty was on xbox. The Twin Snakes was on the Game Cube (and you could argue Nintendo is Metal Gear's home because the original series launches on the NES).
The PS3 alone doesn't cut it by itself, if a developer leaves the xbox out, they will leave lots of $$$ on the table for lost game sales.
Even INSOMNIAC (2nd Party) realized this and they have begun making games for the PS3/360.

Even though I own all 3 games, I'll still buy this. It has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a die hard fanboy for MGS, nor the fact that I really want to play though them all again. It also has nothing to do with how this is one of 3 game franchises that I've played and beat every single canon game either. Ok... I lied a little. But the fact that this collection, if its anything like the others, will have trophy support which will finally give me more than enough reason to play through them all again is just perfect. I sank over 100 hours into Peace Walker. And probably around the same combined for the other 2. The only way this would be any better is if it had the first game, and the rest of the canon games would be a nice bonus. I'd also be mad about it all going to 360, but honestly, people just need to accept that by now. Yeah, it sucks, we lost a major exlusive. But really, who cares? Does this make this game any less awesome? Does this even have any effect on you? I used to hate Xbox too, then I actually thought about it and realized it was dumb.

I will say that it isn't the 360 I have a disgust for but rather Microsoft's influence/practices that have stained the sanctity of the gaming industry this gen.

I like "gaming systems" and 360 fall into that category but I've always been a firm believer that all gaming systems should all be unique and have the majority of their library filled with exclusives. The 360 is becoming nothing more than a PS3 clone.

Everytime I a PS3 exclusive I say to myself, "man, the PS3 hasn't even begun".

Also for anyone interested, Peace Walker is by far the most fun I've ever had with any MGS game. If you're anything like me, you'll be a little iffy with the story, but trust me when I say that gameplay was easily the best portable experience I've ever had and honestly, it even tops some current console games. The only draw back was the lack of a crawl ability... and unfortunately I'm serious. But trust me, this games amazing.

EDIT: I can agree with what you're saying there. Microsoft have been negatively impactful during this generation. I don't mind some of the exclusive they've taken, but when it comes to stuff like them buying exclusivity for things like DLC, that's where I get annoyed.

Lesson learned: The only exclusive games that would forever remain exclusive are those made by Sony's own studios. At least Sony had the foresight to invest on their own development studios instead of buying (timed) exclusivity from third-party devs. And better yet, there's no shortage of awesome first-party titles on the horizon!

360 got Final Fantasy, so PS3 got Bioshock

PS3 got Mass Effect, so 360 got Metal Gear Solid

Also, aside from all the Xbot fans boasting the demise of PS3 exclusivity, I think it's great that 360 players will finally get a taste of some great games that they've been missing out on. Plus, some may want to try MGS4 after playing these and therefore wind up buying a PS3, finding that free online is cool and Blu-ray is pretty cool, play Uncharted 2 to see what the fuss is about and HEY PRESTO!! After wading through the fanboy butt pain & pathetic crocodile tears responses in this hard-to-read thread, i truly cannot understand the logic behind fanboys. It's actually kinda cute :)

I mean if this was a new next gen ready MGS going multiplat, then maybe you would have a reason to sob & whimper in the corner, but this is an HD remake of Sons of Liberty & Snake Eater, two games which are old now, excluding Peace Walker which isn't exactly fresh anymore. Are we really stressing over 5+ year old games going multiplat now!? Freakin' wow!

True MGS fans will appreciate this game reaching a wider audience & enhancing it's fanbase. I'm personally glad 360 are getting this even though i will be buying it on PS3 myself.

I mean hell, the PoP trilogy stayed PS3 exclusive & those games were on the original Xbox, but hey that's fine huh!?

The problem is how some people forget that MGS never was really a Sony exclusive franchise. MG1 & 2 started on MSX computers but later ported on Nintendo and updated on Playstation 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 was on Playstation 2 and Substance was released early on Xbox. MGS3 was already announced for the 3DS. Heck, even the original MGS1 which became popular after starting on Playstation got ported to PC, Dreamcast, but was only updated graphically for the Gamecube. Also, they are having MGS: Rising on the Xbox 360 as well, so they probably also brought over the HD remakes to give Xbox players a chance to experience Metal Gear before trying it out. So only MGS4 is Sony exclusive. It's too bad though that Twin Snakes won't be added to the collection. Maybe if they ever consider doing another update for the original Metal Gears?

Alright, haven't read any of the comments yet, so if anyone else has said this, don't sue me. HELLZ YAH! Now, I've already got all three of these games for their respective systems, but that doesn't mean that I'm not getting this day 1. That being said, I have a couple of issues.
1) Clearly Konami are putting pressure on Kojima. He seemingly wanted to keep the MGS series off the 360, and yet both Rising and this new set are coming. What are the odds that MGS4 does eventually get the port treatment?
2) I know that it's already available on the Store, but why not include the original MGS in this set, or even Twin Snakes? I'm sure you all know my reasoning for this desire by now, and I would be happy even if it was little more than an up-res version of the original PS1 game. It's not as if there'd be any difficulty to it, I mean it's already been ported FFS.
3) This also makes it seem as though Kojima is having difficulty breaking away from MGS. It's clearly the money maker franchise, but they just keep getting churned out, and I find that saddening. I want to see the master do something different.

On the other hand, a ZoE Classics HD set makes me wonder if perhaps a third game is coming. There hasn't yet been a compilation without a new game on the way, as Sly had the teaser for 4, PoP was basically filling in around The Forgotten Sands for people that may have missed the originals, and there are rumblings of a PS3 port of SC:Conviction, as well as the unofficial announcement of SC:Retribution.
Peace.

Well if it is at all relevent, it was people that supported Microsofts xbox 360 that , out of nowhere, began claiming the destruction of the PS3 and bashed it any chance they got in the very beginning. So "this hatred" wasn't initiated by Playstation fans, I would like to think.

I honestly think that one of the main reasons Playstation loyalist have a problem with former exclusives going to the 360 is that it usually means the PS3 version/set isn't going to get or be what it could have solely for the sake of being "identical" to the inferior console.

Indeed ShadowScorpio, had fans of another console not spent the last 5 years boasting and bragging about every franchise that lost it's PlayStation exclusivity and proclaiming the 'pwnage' and death of Sony I might be less inclined to be annoyed. That fanboy BS is in my mind the genesis for the tidal wave of hatred aimed at Sony - PARTICULARLY - in North America. Odd how the company behind the other console is very specifically US based and it is the US that harbors the most baseless disregard and outright hate for Playstation and Sony in general. This console generation has been notable for one thing in my mind - other than the exceptional exclusive games we've seen on each platform. That thing is the outright hatred sown and cultivated against Sony. Part of that has been the dump trucks of slush fund spent by another console maker wooing away former exclusive franchises to timed or complete exclusivity on another platform. The polarization, rivalry and hatred engendered is tearing parts of the industry to pieces.

you know where i think all of this sony hate began? right at the start of this gen with the $600 ps3. i don't care how much of a loss sony was selling it for...it turned off a ton of gamers that jumped ship over to 360 and haven't looked back. it's that group in particular who seem to hate sony the most. you couldn't give those guys a ps3.

Excelsior, the thing I don't understand about that is, why would it produce the overwhelming hatred? I mean, expensive products are expensive products. Sticker shock happens. But, how does a product being expensive translate to such hatred? By that logic (the logic of those feeling that way, not you), all makers of luxury cars ought to be the subject of similar hatred.

$600 didn't stop the iPhone from selling. I think it was the xBots and their "it won't have any games at launch" and the such.

I here ya Highlander.

I understand people's argument about how the PS2 didn't have competition on the same level as PS2 las gen. Having competition is fine but MS has really used some dishonerable tactics. Nintendo has more money than Sony and Microsoft combined but you never saw them do what Ms did this gen. Which is ironic because Nintendo and Sony have had a rocky relationship in the past.

My point here can also be expressed by the fact that you don't see nearly as much distain for Nintendo on this site as you see for Microsoft. Nintendo is , as I see it, more respected here than MS. I know I respect them more. If Apple can into the game industry with a new console, I'm inclined to believe that would go the route of Sony and Nintendo -Inspiring quality and ingenuity, actually doing honest good for the game industry.

So, yeah the only good that MS has done for this industry is helping Sony become stronger and helping Sony realize how important keeping the Playstation brand in the gaming industry really is.

Ah crap! There goes another 60$ that I don't have. As die hard Metal Gear fan I simply can't turn this down. I've put so many hours into those games. I simply can't turn down a remake. But why of why does this have to be a muti-plat... Ok so I know why ($$), but still.

That is a hilarious way of comforting yourself lol.

Snake is in and playable in MGS2 and the plot is revolved around him as said by kojima. Big Boss is the root of Snake and a huge part of Snake's story...

the reason this is multiplat is simple. ms's marketshare is too big to ignore. it sucks...somehow out of all the exclusives sony has lost this gen, this one hurts the most.

I doubt that it's the 360's markets share so much, as it's probably more probable that M$ probably just did another one of their now-patented, middle-of-the-night, loaded armored truck convoy drive-by's, right in front of Konami's favorite bank of choice.

It's very ironic how things turned out here. About two months ago, everyone on here was hoping for remakes of past MGS games for the PS3. Instead of being happy about it, there's nothing but anger and frustration over the fact the xbox is getting it too. All this talk of 'holding back because of an inferior console' is irrelevant, due to the fact the games are based on last-gen games. And the series were NEVER owned by Sony, yet some folks are saying it is. After all the times I visited this site, I did not expect to see this kind of reaction. It really doesn't make you seem better than the Xbots that made those MGS remarks. I'll just let the Soldier express my thoughts for me...

Don't blow things out of proportion.

All I see are a ton of posts from people who want both collections, and no more than one or two people complaining that it went to the 360. THEN I see a whole lot MORE posts from the unbiased police attacking them with a holier than thou attitude...which you are now currently expressing.

There appear to be just as many people willing to come out of the woodworks screaming, "I'm not a fanboy" than anyone insulting the 360 or MS for any reason. So you can all just stop now.

Sonic, be a little objective here.

You don't think every single MGS fan here isn't excited for this collection?! Come on. This is a site where we can express our excitement and our frustrations, hence your post being an example.

People are entitled to not agree with the decision of these collections going to 360 as much as they are entitled to not have a problem with it.

It's actually the people on here saying things like, "Instead of being happy that we are getting the MGS collection, people are upset that 360 is getting too", that is kind of starting to irritate me.

I believe if the PS3 has caught on day one and not year two or three many of these game series that were exclusives or a year exclusives on the PS2 would remain exclusives to the PS3. I don't blame these companies for hedging their bets by making these series available to the 360 due to the PS3 coming out of the gate slow.

Now I think the MGS remakes won't get much play on the 360 cuz it doesn't have a Call of Duty in the title or it doesn't have guns that have chainsaws built in them.

I think M$ just want these games on their system just for them and their fans can say ha ha we have this game too. What I say to that keep saying that because it seems anytime Xbots crow about the PS3 losing an exclusive they lose an exclusive.

MGS 3 = one of the very best games EVER. Also pumped for Peace Walker on PS3. I honest to god tried to play it on PSP, and enjoyed it, but MGS NEEDS dual thumb sticks. Also, finding other players to team up with for some missions and bosses is a central component of the game and getting PSP to go online for this was such a pain in the butt I gave up.

I actually played MGS 2 again for the first time in like 10 years last year -- every bit as terrible as I remember, a serious misstep for the franchise in my opinion. Staggering how well they rebounded with MGS 3 and, of course, 4.

Were getting it on the PS3 guys be greatfull that it's coming to the console at all!

Im pretty confident Kojima was peed off with the fact that he had spent ages remaking Mgs1 for ps3 with the mgs4 engine, but had to scrap it due to Konami's wish for the collection to be released on xbox.

Wrote that like an idiot, but hope you get the jist.

Question... why no inclusion of the first game? I would've LOVED to have seen The Twin Snakes in HD as part of this collection. I know it was exclusive to the GameCube back then but exclusivity obviously means nothing when MGS3 and Peace Walker are now showing up on the 360. I'm psyched for this collection but it just seems incomplete without the first title. I personally would've had MGS 1-3 in the collection and then a digital release of Peace Walker instead.

I would've liked to have seen the whole MG/MGS series, along with Twin Snakes, the 2 Acids & 2 Ops, plus the MGS Database & graphical novel(oh hell, even add Rising in too), all done up as a one complete boxed set.

IMO, that alone would be the #1 biggest monster of any collection in the history of gaming.

Hmm.. I'm not sure what to make of this.. Sony had a pretty novel idea with these HD collections. They took older games , cranked them up to HD, ironed out all their technical flaws and generally made them better than they used to be.

I'm not sure if multiplat developers will put as much care into their HD collections as Sony does. Look at what happened with the Prince of Persia collection.. They basically just cranked up the resolution of the ingame graphics and called it a day.. All the game's technical flaws were still present and the CG cutscenes were still in blurry SD..

I sincerely hope that Konami does a better job than Ubisoft did.
