XCOM Unveiled: Humanity Is Under Attack In 2012
Sci-fi fans will revel in the concept, and shooter fans might like the compelling atmosphere.
2K Games has announced XCOM, in development at 2K Marin and coming to the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 6, 2012 (the international release is three days later). Dubbed "a gripping tactical action experience set in mid-century America," the game features "deep, visceral gunplay with powerful sci-fi abilities. In some ways, this is reminding us of last year's Singularity, and that's not a bad thing.
Said 2K president Christophe Hartmann:
"Every time I think of XCOM it gives me the chills, the kind that come from standing witness to the corruption and destruction of your world as you stand powerless to prevent it. I’m pleased to announce today that we will be bringing this experience to an even broader audience when XCOM comes to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in March 2012."
XCOM will include a new origin story and players will step into the shoes of Special Agent William Carter. Humanity is facing extinction so they must capture the technology of the invaders if they wish to survive. As one final note of poignancy, the action takes place on our home soil here in the U.S.; a setting that worked extremely well for THQ's Homefront.
More on this promising project when it becomes available.

It's a well established opinion here that shooters are far too prevalent in this gen, but this game is the ultimate expression of that. X-COM was one of the best turn-based strategy games of it's time, back in the early 90s, and to take a respected franchise like that and turn it into it's complete opposite is quite disheartening. I was sad when I first heard about this last year and I'm even sadder today.

back in 1992 i was obsessed with Xcom. it was such a phenomenal game!
however, i like how this is more on a first person level, but i, too, am tired of FPS...
maybe they'll be able to find a middle path for this?
xcom:enemy unknown was badass...
i wonder how many people here remember it from the PC area...

(Some of the old UK folks on here may remember it)
Would love a PSP old school version of Xcom or Laser Squad.
Making it a shooter? Well it's like making Valkyria Chronicles a shooter...
The beauty of these games is stopping, thinking and taking your time to strategize.
Take that away and what have you got! (yes a poor mans Call of Duty)

Exception to the rule: Resistance. I really liked those games.
