DUST 514: The "Persistent Shooter" Powered By Choice
If you missed it during Sony's press conference last night, you'll want to check out the trailer.
And if you desire more information on this unique project, you'll definitely want to head over to the PlayStation Blog and learn more about the concept of a "persistent shooter." ...don't take that literally.
It's that first paragraph of description that will convince you that this sci-fi MMO is nothing like Call of Duty or Killzone or any other FPS. In fact, it's really nothing like anything you've played before. Well, if you've never played EVE Online, that is:
"When playing your FPS title of choice, have you ever wished that there was something more to it beyond your rank, weapon unlocks, your kill/death ratio and leaderboard prominence? Those things are all great – but what if those matches you fought in actually meant something? What if your successes and failures against your opponents impacted the course of events in a vast setting, potentially changed a virtual world and the gameplay experience of thousands of other players? More than that, what if that impact was felt across two separate games – one on PS3 and one on PC/Mac – that share the same sci-fi universe?"
Those of you who love EVE Online will understand where these developers are coming from, and will be intrigued at this new way of experiencing the EVE universe. The "persistent" part involves the MMO aspect; the world of DUST 514 is always there even when your PlayStation 3 is off, so you're "taking part in something greater than your own individual experience of that world."
Furthermore, your actions will have an impact on your surroundings. And with "thousands of solar systems," one can only imagine how far the ripples caused by those actions will travel. It's a great read so check out the full article, future MMO fans.

Strategy CHECK
Character customization CHECK
Ingame economy CHECK
Coop CHECK
I could have wished it was more of a RPG rather than a shooter, also pvn content too and not all pvp, but beggars can't be choosers. And I *beg* for a decent persistent, strategic mmo these days, with or without the trailing "rpg".

And yes, it is similar to MAG in a basic sense. In other words a shooter with a persistent online world. But the thing is from what I've been able to gather DUST 514 is going to be taking this concept to much greater heights than MAG.

And then the easy solution becomes very tempting... A moment later... Ka-ching! One more micro-sale. :)

And I'm not surprised, now that I think about it. Once you're into a mmorpg one tend to get very involved. Money don't matter as much then. :)
... I just have to remind myself, Dust is *not* a mmorpg.

Don't believe me? Go on their website. It literally says it. How can the president, vice president, or head manager go right in front of a stage at e3 and says it's pc/mac and ps3 exclusive?
It looks like a cross between vanquish and halo, but without the aliens. I don't know if there aliens or not in this game. Glad it uses the move though.

Also, I don't know how a 360 version would work. XBL is a closed network. Microsoft have never allowed any 360 game product to see out of XBL or interact with another network like this. that's one of the things that has been a problem for people in the past. You don't see Steam delivery on 360 do you? Microsoft has rules against developers bringing their third party services into the XBL environment.

And Highlander, I think the point you make there is the very reason why this is an exclusive in the first place.

And when I say gigantic I mean gigantic. We are talking about a game world that spans over multiple galaxies, all with plenty of planets.
Even though you create a character it's your ship that's really your "character", with it's expansions and custom options.
You can play the game more or less how you want, from a law abiding trader crossing the galaxies to buy/sell goods, to a pirate, smuggler, explorer or a combo of those. The game is quite complex, a bit hard to get the grasp of right away, and imo it require a certain fascination for space.
Their website is eveonline com, just download it and try it if you like. :)

Back then when ff14 was suppose to be released on the pc and ps3, sony would have you think that they paid square to have it exclusive. No, microsoft doesn't want a ff14 mmo, when asked to make the game for them.

Then brainiac comes in and take lex hostage. Lex and brainiac thought they had a deal. Brainiac can rule, control, or destroy any planet or galaxy, just give lex complete control of earth. Brainiac lied, cause both the heroes and villians hate him, and if they joined forces, they might win.
So, lex is captured. He manages to escape, he steals brainiac exobytes. Exobytes are tools brainiac uses to scan humans and superhumans or is used to steals heroes and villians powers. Lex goes back to the past and releases the exobytes on the earth giving normal humans super powers.
Lex appears in front of superman, batman, and wonder women in the watchtower in outer space saying that we need to join forces to stop brainiac. Story done.
Gameplay: you choose to be a hero or villain. Each hero and villain has 3 mentors each. There are similar quests, but each mentor causes you to go on different quests. Everyone journey begins on brainiacs ship, with you trying to escape.
In the very beginning of the game, you choose to be male or female, you pick your outfits and create your name. You have a choice of 10 different weapons to choose from. Brawling (with fists), staff, 2 handed weapons, 1 handed weapons, dual pistols, rifle, hand blasters, martial arts, bow and arrows, and dual weapons.
A choice of 6 powers: fire, ice (tank), mental, gadgetry, (controller), and sorcery, and nature (healer). And finally, a choice of movement: flight, super speed, and acrobats. All of this you get from the start when creating your character.
I don't know about WOWarcraft, i think with them, they allow you to have 1 character per 15 dollar fee. DC Universe let's you have up to or a little over 12 characters to create, hero or villain whenever or whichever you choose for 15 dollars a month.
Granted the graphics on the ps3 looks ok. I hear it looks gorgeous on the pc. The in game characters look like that of a very polished ps1 game. But considering that you have 100's to a 1000 something characters on 1 of the 6 servers. The background, characters, and gameplay is pretty good.
Those weapons, powers, and movements are all interchangeable, and all have leveling trees. This is a button masher mmorpg. It sells at the store and at the ps store for 60 dollars. I strongly recommend you get the collectors edition at amazon for 60 dollars. It's tax free depending on what state you live in.
You get the statue, the standard size dc universe online comic book, a prequel comic book, and an art book. The slight problem i have, is that the game itself, comes in a hard paper case, instead of the standard ps3 case. Going from 100 dollars to 60, is a pretty huge discount.
There is more to say, quite a bit more actually. But I'm running out of typing characters. The game requires 18 gigs of hard drive space. That's takes literally about 8 to 10 hours to download. That may seem like a lot. But DC Universe is massive. You probably say to yourself, "that's all, it's not 25 to 30 gigs of required hard drive space?"
When i say massive, you start off in either gotham or metropolis. Each has two islands a piece. There's a 4 player co-op, it's optional. you actually can go questing by yourself, but when you reach a certain level. i wouldn't recommend it.
Another thing that is optional is your appearance. Once you upgrade your weapons and armor. There's a style tab icon that literally lets you keep your weapons and armor's appearance and lock it. Once it's locked, your appearance is permanent. Once it's unlocked, you can change your weapon and armor to whatever you like. Once the select armor or weapon is equipped, only the appearance changes.
Like I said, There's quite a bit of stuff I'm Ieaving out. For example, joining and creating groups, alerts, bounties, legends, raids, duos. I know, I know, I'm rambling, but I sincerely hope you give this a try. PEACE.

I don't think people really understand the sheer massive *size* of those things unless they try playing it themselves.
What you say still remind me a lot of City Of Heroes (another mmorpg for PCs). Cool with all the character slots. Often it's just as fun creating the characters as to actually play with them. :D
I'm gonna play this one. As a matter of fact I'll add it to my wishlist on Amazon right away and keep an eye on the price. As soon as it drops enough for me to not have to pay taxes to import it, I'll get it.
Gonna be a blast. And I can tell you right away: I'm gonna be one hot, dual wield(if possible?) sword/dagger babe. Oh yes. Baddies be warned!

Putting inFamous2 on HOLD, redirecting Visa card towards the only mmorpg on the ps3 so far.
...
ABORT: It's not that low (yet) in the store here in Norway. Still full price.
No dual wielding hooters for me... Yet.

did not really enjoy what we saw at the show yesterday.
what can i say?
im sick of shooter this, and shooter that!
can we please go back to the good old PS1 and 2 days where we had heaps of horror, action and platformer games?
198 million shooters releasing this year, but how many action and platforming games?
i cant think of any action hack and slash games, and only platformer i can think of is uncharted 3.
1!
1 game in 2 genres compared to the flood of shooters coming out!
looks like i have to go back to steam if i want something besides a shooter!
:(
