Rage Delayed, Now Must Battle Other Big-Name Titles

In all honesty, we kinda thought September 13 would've been a better date.

But hey, if you need more time, you need more time. Team Bondi required nearly 7 years to bring us L.A. Noire and id Software's Rage has also been 7 years in the making, but the latter has suffered another delay. It isn't big, but the competition is that much stiffer now: Rage will drop on October 4, the same day that sees the release of Twisted Metal, Dark Souls, NBA 2K12 and The Darkness II. But perhaps id's new title will stand apart, if only because it has the distinction of being the first new IP from this developer since Quake in 1996. ...geez, PC devs sure work slow, don't they? Diablo III, Duke Nukem Forever...and where's that Daikatana follow-up? Oh, they weren't doing one? My bad.

Well, maybe John Carmack and Co. will get this one right. The premise is certainly intriguing...

I don't understand why some release games on dates that they know other big titles will launch. 2K12 is a must buy and likely TM..Then the month before is Resistance 3 and the month after is Uncharted 3. Bad timing but wish them luck

There are only 52 Tuesdays in a year (sometimes 53). Most of them have some high profile game scheduled to release on them, especially toward the end of the year.

I've never been particularly interested in this game, so I see the delay as more of a good thing. Because now Resistance 3 should have an easier time. And I think that Twisted Metal is more than capable of holding it's own because there haven't been many big budget car combat games coming out in recent years. That should help it stand out. And of course that is only one reason among others.

I wouldn't gloat too much about situation PC gaming is today.

What consoles did to PCs, smartphones and handhelds might do to consoles. Very soon.

Of course, this problem wouldn't exist if devs would properly support platforms they plan to work with.

Hehe - it's always clever to be a bit modest, yes. :)
But I don't think consoles are really threatened by smartphones. However, I can very much picture a future where handheld gaming devices are merged with smartphones. That's just around the corner, imo. If so, then maybe Vita will be the last of it's kind from Sony?

I dunno about this game. I get this feeling they spent all their time making it pretty, to the point that the gameplay will end up suffering for it. Hopefully not a case of "All flash, no substance."

That's what I've been reading too, a little fleshing out of the world and it's NPC's would go a long way to bumping this shooter higher up my wish list.

Can someone explain how having a release date at the same time of other monster releases affects sales? It doesn't make any sense to me. Rage would sell just as much as if it would be released on a day with big games wouldn't it?

no, because people can only afford so many games and if something else releases at the same time they may get that and opt to buy Rage at a later date or even used. Developers don't get a sale if people buy their game used.

Many folks have limited resources and don't make mulitple purchases at a time. They save up for a game they really want. If Rage was the only game coming out that month, it would have a much bigger chance of securing a consumer purchase.

However, it's now just one of several high profile new releases coming out that week and has a higher probablity of being passed over for another game.

Also, shelf space is a huge consideration. More games released at the same time means fewer front covers facing consumers, which decreases the chances of purchases by uninformed customers.

They get the original sale. It's not like used games appear out of thin air. The guy who bought and traded his game wouldn't necessarily have EVER bought it (rentals!) if there was no used game market.

Maybe its just me then cause just because I don't have money for it now with other games coming out doesn't mean that I wont get it at all. I would still eventually buy it.

Agreed. I often buy games more than a year after they're released. But neither of us (nor most who visit this site) reflects the majority of the game-buying public; we're better informed and more committed to the hobby.
