EA Stripping Original Battlefield 3 Content For DLC?

This really isn't the kind of publicity you want, especially when you have to face down the biggest game publisher and the biggest game of 2011 come fall.

The website Reddit has exploded due to what appears to be a shady move by EA concerning their upcoming shooter, Battlefield 3. A Physical Warfare Pack has been revealed, which includes weapons, add-ons and new maps, and it's exclusive to GAME and Gamestation stores in the UK. That's not the problem, though; the problem is that - evidently - EA and DICE are chopping Battlefield 3 into little bite-sized portions of pre-order DLC. Basically, weapons and gear are being cut from the core game to be made into retailer-exclusive bonuses. Here's the supposed evidence:

"There’s probably no chance that anyone is going to see this comment but I’ll leave it anyway. I have a very good relationship with a person at DICE, who I don’t want to out, who came to me when the physical warfare pack was announced to get me to look through forums to find negative feedback about the pack that he could give to his superiors at EA. He was pissed that they had announced it without the go ahead of DICE and wanted to show EA the reactions of the community. He said they now have to do similar packs in other country’s in order to keep the balance."

Obviously, if true, EA making some extra cash by stealing content away from customers isn't going to go over well. In retaliation, it seems many gamers who have already pre-ordered Battlefield 3 are canceling their deposits. EA may respond to this in due time, but many suspicious consumers have long since suspected publishers and developers of stripping original content out of games to sell it as DLC at a later date.

And if that's true...we have a serious problem.

Thanks for the news John. Looks like this just turned into a bargain bin purchase for me. :)

i'll probably get it anyway, then uncharted 2 the following week. if this is true then its pretty stupid move. if they really wanted to get better sales, instead of preorder dlcs they shouldve used this content for the vip club thing. i mean it would push for buying the game new. if you buy used then youll have a chopped up game.

Well, Jawknee, you and I have discussed this in the past, but my money is just about to go PS3 exclusives.

I do not want a game with single DVD content, or do I want games that offer DLC on some type of monthly basis.

I hear ya Max. No more day one purchases for multiplats unless they are like L.A. Noire. In other words...deserving. This is shady if true. EA has probably been doing this longer than we all know. Just look at all the over prices crap DLC they have posted on PSN.

@ Jawknee

Not sure if you play sports games..but EA has been doing crap like this for a while. Various features/perks in Madden that EA nickles and dimes people for...just ridiculous

I don't. Haven't enjoyed sports games since Double Dribble on NES and Ken Griffy, Jr. Presents Major League Baseball on the SNES.

Doesn't surprise me though. EA is shady.

Doesn't matter one bit to me. I don't play multiplayer so let them strip all the maps and guns that they want. Won't affect my single player experience.

Now,
If companies start cutting single player and making you buy DLC to finish the story, that is where I would draw the line.

It's not really the first time. As far as I'm concerned, most day 1 DLC is exactly this, and how hard would it be for devs to incorporate most retailer-exclusive content across platforms? It's always the case. You want something shocking, how about microtransactions to unlock avatar creation pieces in WKC2. Now that's how you gouge the consumer.

But hey, at least EA is at fault here, and not DICE. The developers is trying to play nice, and the publisher is seeing the dollar signs. Let's hope that this gets all the negative backlash it needs so that maybe publishers will wake up and realise that this sh** just shouldn't be allowed to fly.
Peace.

They charging you to unlock equipment for your avatar or is it just the same lame thing as before where you are stuck with your av unless you pay a fee to remake it?

There's a fee to remake your avatar, but also a couple of hairstyles locked out until you pay for them when you first dive into the creation suite... It boggles the mind.

Review is live.

Yeah it's pretty damn stupid. If I'm buying the game why can't I do whatever I want with the avatar? I'll just be porting my old one over though so I'm not worried.

If EA is the only one at fault, the developer could temporarily change their name to Slice N' Dice out of protest.

I was contemplating buying this. I've just made up my mind, as in hell no. Not even bargain bin material for me. Usually I'll buy the extra content if I pick the game up cheap, but that's if it's really extra content and not cut content.

can they really be that dumb? i doubt it. their gonna be running with their tail between their legs once they see the backlash. I wouldn't be too worried about this. this would be like 10 steps back after a crucial step foward toward getting the upper hand on activision. This has to be a rumor of some kind. no names named, and a pretty vague statement aren't nearly enough to make me regret wanting this. EA better clear this sh** up though if they really want to keep thier edge

First they charge you to play a game they already made money off of once with their own pay-to-play thing, now this?
We should all boycott EA games till they learn that it's us, the gamers that make them money. Maybe they should stop being a sneaky, money grubbing company start giving us the respect we deserve, before other publishers start doing more things like this as well.

I'm sorry, but take a look at almost EVERY retailer specific preorder bonus, and that's exactly what this is. Sure it's irritating, but people tend to lap it up like nothing.

It would be a long time before you will save any money by waiting to get this game used, better to pick it up new and avoid the pay to play fee.

they only make you pay to play if you buy it used. sure they already made money on the first sale but none of your money would go to the developers, just gamestop or used game stores. so you're basically saying that you dont want to support the game developers but you want all of the things they did for the game like patches and multiplayer. as far as im concerned, if you dont buy the game new which supports the developers, you really dont have the right to complain. granted this only apply to people who buy used and expect to get everything gamers who buy new games get for no extra cost.

If this is true B3 just became a 2 month down the road purchase off Craig's List and MW3 will get my money. EA is so stupid if this is true! MW3 will outsell Black Ops easy if this is true.

Reading stuff like this makes me feel a lot less guilty about waiting for games to drop quite a bit in price before I buy them. They wanna do this to me, fine. I'll simply wait for cheap.

First, I don't see how that quote is proof of anything.

Second, IF this were true, who cares? DICE productions have always had meager offerings at best.

EA, Activision, and other publishers will continue to do this until people stop throwing money at them. Sadly this will never happen.

If this id true, I'll wait till the price drops below a $25 price point.

We can wait EA out, but I doubt EA can wait us out.

I think this is true, but I also think it is true for a *lot* or releases. Even on AAA titles like Red Dead Redemption last year.
I did get a *really* bad feeling in my stomach when they offered multiplayer poker gaming as a dlc, when both multiplayer and poker play was already in the game.

Noone will be able to convince me that that was not just ripped out of the game and packaged into a dlc.

This stuff is sad, really. Cause it makes them all look very, very greedy. We like to think of this whole games industry as "artistry", not greedy, commercial corporations, even though that is of course what they are...

Yeah this reminds me of SC4, MvC3, and MK. all these games had DLC locked away on the disk, needing to pay additional money for access to it.

not one bit surprised by this. ea is one of the worse offenders out there regarding their handling of dlc. they had all the bonus content lin me2 locked out until you redeemed your one time cerebus code. that stuff was already on the disc. boo ea. greedy attempt at slow roasting consumers.

Not surprised by this at all. Also will not stop me from buying the game, it might stop me from buying the DLC though. IMO DLC for almost every title is overpriced. It would have to have a negative impact on me playing the game or include something I really want for me to shell out the more then 5 bucks for it.

This is the one issue I have with EA and their shooters. Exclusive in-game items requiring gamers to spend extra $5-10 just to be on a level playing field with other players.

Never looks good for a competitive online game to have balancing issues on release day.

EA needs to learn that exclusive, maps, game modes, skins, behind-the-scenes vids, etc are tolerable for DLC or pre-order incentives. Exclusive weapons, equipment, attachments, abilities, or anything else that effects the online gameplay for ALL gamers only hamper the quality of the online experience and favor those with deeper pockets or less appreciation for their money.

In summary; Bad idea, EA. Don't shoot yourself in the foot...again.
