Uncharted 3 Characters Show Off Their "Smoother" Look
I wish I could come up with a better descriptive term than "smoother," but that seems to be the most accurate.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception looks incredible from a visual standpoint, as one might expect. But as many have noticed, there has been a technical alteration to the character design and presentation. For example, here's a picture courtesy of GamingBolt.
It's Chloe as she looked in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and as she appeared in the E3 trailer for Uncharted 3. There's also a comparison shot of Elena and we've already seen plenty of Drake in past months. In our eyes, it seems plain: they've been "smoothed" over. The thing that's bugging me is this- I really can't decide if it's "better."
I mean, strictly from a technical standpoint, I think it's plain. They've taken another step by cutting back on that glossy, almost plastic-y sheen we've seen in the past. At the same time, it almost seems as if a touch of the rich color and definition from Uncharted 2 went away with that glossiness. It's certainly more realistic and more accomplished; I'm just not sure I like it more. Sorta torn right now.
You also get slightly different facial animations with this sleeker style, and in this respect, I haven't seen enough to make any decisions one way or the other. I'm just wondering what the fans have to say about this.

The Elena one makes for a better comparison but the lighting is entirely off.
I'm not seeing anything I don't like, though. U2 looks to be shaping up to be another real stunner.

There are some minor differences but the characters in Uncharted 2 pretty much looked the same all the time.
You can find other shots of Chloe in U2, for instance, but they're not going to look drastically different.

Look at how U3 Chloe's own hair and features are generating a "soft" self shadow on herself.
Plus her hair appears to have greater volumetric density in U3.
In terms of tech prowess, there's no doubt, the U3 model is doing more visuaully.
Stylistically, between the two, that's different. There does appear to be a different smoohing process used for flesh tones. Chloe has also lost her thick dark eye shadow. Which I like, less of a zombie vibe going on for her in U3.

Same goes for the Elena pic. Maybe ND is progressing the characters with time also? It just seems both Elena and Chloe seem more matured. Either way it may not necessarilly be better, as both Elena and Chloe were always modeled very well, hell that goes for all the characters. But it's definitely a step forward and I think we've learned even with the whole Cole, inFAMOUS 2 ordeal that it will work out in the end! They didn't go too far as to completely re-model the characters so I won't complain regardless.
Can't wait for this one!
EDIT: I just want to point out I have no problems with Chloe in UC2. I know I said she was dark around the eyes, but that wasn't a knock. I love Chloe and I loved her character, she was modeled perfectly for her personality especially! But it seems now she's going lighter on the eye shadow for UC3! ;)

Highlander We went straight from winter to summer. We didn't have a spring at all and up until literally a couple weeks ago the weather was just rain all day... Now all of a sudden 80 degrees it's like there was no comfort of spring at all. Terrible!

Well I have no room to complain then... Hopefully no tornados real close to you, like those affected so far, it is a terrible ordeal. I just love spring weather, more so the temperatures than anything and, southern Oregon just skipped that part of the year!

The mid-south is an odd place because we can get severe winter cold, we can get roasting summer heat combined with humidity levels you'd think were more at home on the coast, and of course the spring and autumn storm seasons. You'd think that as far south as we are, winters would be mild, and as far inland as we are, humidity wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, the weather likes to prove expectations like that to be unfounded.

My best advice is, if your are any sorts of fan of the first, you'll absolutely love inFAMOUS 2. So go get it. To me it is absolutely just as fun, if not more because of the new abilities and powers, plus a few new things making traversing buildings, and travel faster and easier. To me the story picked up great where the first left off and is growing more and more compelling. So go get it! ;)
Highlander-
I don't think I could live in those conditions, so I commend you. I'm picky with my weather and bad weather when prolonged really puts me in a bad mood, likewise so does not being comfortable when it's 80+ outside, haha. Even where I live I hate the weather because it can be 80 with no clouds one minute then the next be 60 and thunderstorms. But those conditions you described make me cringe! ;)
I've been to Florida and hated the humidity. An I've been all over the west coast including Montana, but never anywhere near where you are. But it does seem the weather you get, from the news as the source, is very, well how you said "odd".

I suspect it's a storm in a tea-cup though, and the game will look ridiculously good.

They are certainly softer, but I'm going to miss that hypnotic glow in Chloe's eyes even of some of you say it made her a zombie.
Hey was Elena's voice actor Kuo in inFamous 2? She sounded familiar.

Michael Ensign played a Judge on Boston Legal and was also in Titanic (among his many credits). I liked his performance as Wolfe.
Dawn Olivieri (hotness alert) played Lydia on Heros (among various credits).
Nika Futterman does tons of voice work in games and TV animation such as Star Wars The Clone Wars.

Texture detail is the only area I see that is relatively on par with other games like AC. not surprising seeing that textures are stored in, or streamed into, the RAM which is about the same for 360 and ps3 in capacity.

But this Uncharted 3 game. Hot dang. That looks like a true blue soft shadowing system they have in place that fittingly looks more realistic in softer ambient light conditions, not to mention a processing hog. I hope ND does a behind the scenes feature on how they implemented that.

I would say U3 reaches that category. Skin tone definately looks better on the above picture, however judging by the pictures alone, the clothing doesn't look as defined as Uncharted 2's, and the shadows aren't darker either. Definately more refined shadows though.

Either way we'll see what approach Naughty Dog has decided pathe with; it's still nitpicking at the end of the day.

To make something of a proper comparison you at least need a similar screenshot from both games.
Oh and based on the screenshots, I think U3 looks much better on Chloe and U2 looks slightly better on Elena, so again this says nothing.

I think the image of Elena shows this quite well.
It would be difficult I guess to think that human's in games would be photo-realistic - like cars do in Gran Turismo 5 (and Forza 4) - but then again I remember thinking that the graphics in the first Tomb Raider "just couldn't get any better!" ...
Very much looking forward to Uncharted 3 ...

i prefer the top one, gives a smoother less wax like look.
one thing i REALLY want to see in all games from now on is brighter colors!
everything these days for some reason is either grey and brown ala resistance or brighter colors but darker tones of them ala uncharted 2.
compare the forest level in uncharted 2 to some forest in uncharted 1.
the original has bright luscious greens for the grass, trees and such.
2 has a real dark almost ivory green to it.
we need more bright vibrant colors, like bulletstorm that was a color frenzy!
sick of all these dark toned, or two toned games!
makes me feel like im watching a dreary WW2 video!
