Uncharted 3 Characters Show Off Their "Smoother" Look

I wish I could come up with a better descriptive term than "smoother," but that seems to be the most accurate.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception looks incredible from a visual standpoint, as one might expect. But as many have noticed, there has been a technical alteration to the character design and presentation. For example, here's a picture courtesy of GamingBolt.

It's Chloe as she looked in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and as she appeared in the E3 trailer for Uncharted 3. There's also a comparison shot of Elena and we've already seen plenty of Drake in past months. In our eyes, it seems plain: they've been "smoothed" over. The thing that's bugging me is this- I really can't decide if it's "better."

I mean, strictly from a technical standpoint, I think it's plain. They've taken another step by cutting back on that glossy, almost plastic-y sheen we've seen in the past. At the same time, it almost seems as if a touch of the rich color and definition from Uncharted 2 went away with that glossiness. It's certainly more realistic and more accomplished; I'm just not sure I like it more. Sorta torn right now.

You also get slightly different facial animations with this sleeker style, and in this respect, I haven't seen enough to make any decisions one way or the other. I'm just wondering what the fans have to say about this.

I noticed this too, and I think I'm a fan. Its very apparent in the E3 trailer that they do look "smoother" and more "natural". I think that picture really showcases that, but the UC2 Chole looks like its taken from gameply while the top pic of her is from a cutscene.

There arent really any cut-scenes in uncharterd, when they do go to cutscenes, their all in engine cutscenes, no cgi or anything is used, so whatever they do in a cutscene is the engine graphics

Not sure if it's just the pics themselves, but I'm liking the top pic(U3) of Chloe 100% better than the bottom one(U2), where she actually looks a bit zombified.

And the same goes for Elena's pics too.

Yeah, I'm liking the U3 images better as well. I had to look twice though, because the article title and the way the images are stacked was confusing me. the characters don't look smoothed over to me, they look crisper. Chloe has more facial definition for instance.

Make sure to look at some comparisons of Elena and Drake, too.

...I mean, Chloe ALWAYS looks good. ;)

But one question...is that picture-perfect rear of hers "smoother," too, or is this only about faces?

Elena looks *much* better on the lower (U2) picture.

I am starting to believe this has more to do with the actual scene, lighting etc than anything else.

... But I never saw Drake anywhere?

I agree. That scene with the snow in the backgroun of Elena really shows off her face and the modeling. While te other pic is in a room with more lighting, and shadows. It really does make a difference. Which is pretty amazing.

This site has used terrible reference photos for comparison. The U3 Chloe is clearly a cutscene model where the the U2 Chloe is a game play model.... Hence the lower poly count and lesser detail.

The Elena one makes for a better comparison but the lighting is entirely off.

I'm not seeing anything I don't like, though. U2 looks to be shaping up to be another real stunner.

I know that Temjin but remember that cut-scenes and gameplay in these titles are almost identical. It's very difficult to tell the difference; we're not talking about NORMAL games, here.

There are some minor differences but the characters in Uncharted 2 pretty much looked the same all the time.

You can find other shots of Chloe in U2, for instance, but they're not going to look drastically different.

All soft self shadowing has been turned off in the U2 game play model. It's really stands out to me.
Look at how U3 Chloe's own hair and features are generating a "soft" self shadow on herself.
Plus her hair appears to have greater volumetric density in U3.
In terms of tech prowess, there's no doubt, the U3 model is doing more visuaully.

Stylistically, between the two, that's different. There does appear to be a different smoohing process used for flesh tones. Chloe has also lost her thick dark eye shadow. Which I like, less of a zombie vibe going on for her in U3.

Yea I'm really digging the new Chloe for sure. Although we may see a big difference from gameplay to cutscene, which looks to be the case between the two pictures of her. It's very apparent the look is different but lighting and given the facial expression can change a lot also. Chloe always looked to - I don't know - dark around the eyes for me, it fit her personality but maybe now is the time to refine her! I'm a fan!

Same goes for the Elena pic. Maybe ND is progressing the characters with time also? It just seems both Elena and Chloe seem more matured. Either way it may not necessarilly be better, as both Elena and Chloe were always modeled very well, hell that goes for all the characters. But it's definitely a step forward and I think we've learned even with the whole Cole, inFAMOUS 2 ordeal that it will work out in the end! They didn't go too far as to completely re-model the characters so I won't complain regardless.

Can't wait for this one!

EDIT: I just want to point out I have no problems with Chloe in UC2. I know I said she was dark around the eyes, but that wasn't a knock. I love Chloe and I loved her character, she was modeled perfectly for her personality especially! But it seems now she's going lighter on the eye shadow for UC3! ;)

Cole in inFamous2 worked out really well, I was impressed with the characters in inFamous2. they did a tremendous job on the eyes in particular. Eyes seem always to be a bit of a bear for developers, but Sucker Punch did awesomely well in that regard.

Indeed. I even like Cole's new voice and personality. I playing 1 and 2 back and forth(1 as evil Cole and 2 as good)making comparisons. While I like old Cole's voice and costume, the new voice and look is just as good in my opinion. Sucker Punch really set the bar high for visuals and performance in a sandbox game. We've had some nasty storms this year, but the twisting winds have stayed away from us so far. Fortunately the odds of any one person being affected by a tornado are very small, but they can be such severe events that you always have to be careful.

The mid-south is an odd place because we can get severe winter cold, we can get roasting summer heat combined with humidity levels you'd think were more at home on the coast, and of course the spring and autumn storm seasons. You'd think that as far south as we are, winters would be mild, and as far inland as we are, humidity wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, the weather likes to prove expectations like that to be unfounded.

Kylemac6-

My best advice is, if your are any sorts of fan of the first, you'll absolutely love inFAMOUS 2. So go get it. To me it is absolutely just as fun, if not more because of the new abilities and powers, plus a few new things making traversing buildings, and travel faster and easier. To me the story picked up great where the first left off and is growing more and more compelling. So go get it! ;)

Highlander-

I don't think I could live in those conditions, so I commend you. I'm picky with my weather and bad weather when prolonged really puts me in a bad mood, likewise so does not being comfortable when it's 80+ outside, haha. Even where I live I hate the weather because it can be 80 with no clouds one minute then the next be 60 and thunderstorms. But those conditions you described make me cringe! ;)
I've been to Florida and hated the humidity. An I've been all over the west coast including Montana, but never anywhere near where you are. But it does seem the weather you get, from the news as the source, is very, well how you said "odd".

I think the U3 pictures almost look like they're a painted portrait, whereas in U2 you can tell it's a model in a rendered area. The eyes have also lost their watery look, making them seem a bit more realistic. I guess we'll have to wait until we play the game for real.

Most optimisations like polishing up models are done late in development, are they not? So I imagine the models will be perfect come release day. No doubt they already are; we'll see in the beta I guess. But perhaps the implementation of MLAA has something to do with it? When the beta comes I'm gunna be taking an extensive look at it and using my incredible skills of detection to compile all of the technical features of the game (*Cough* Read DF's Tech analysis *Cough*). :D

As ND employee's have said in their own forumns, this is how they wanted their characters in the begginning, only tech didn't allow them. While I like the almost 'cartoonish' style of the past games, uncharted 3 is un-doubtably better. When you have such a beloved series such as Uncharted, your gunna be skeptical when even the most minsicule thing such as pour detail on a character is different. But really, and I say this as ND's #1 fan, ND know what they're doing. If somethings wrong, as said in multiple interview's, they will 'iterate it, change it around until its perfect'. I have faith that they will do that, and any qualms I DO have, such as drakes frankly silly jog (I don't CARE if he's on a ship, he looks like a friggen drunken idiot!), should be sorted come release day.

Eyes are difficult, because sometimes it seems like devs add too much internal reflection to the eye, which essentially blots out the detail in the eye. I mean, an eye is glossy, yes, but it's not that reflective, if it was, we wouldn't be able to see. Cloe's eyes always seemed to be too glassy and reflective. but things improve in steps, and no doubt in U3 they will be deep and soulful instead.

Zeke was voiced by Caleb Moody, Kuo was voiced by Dawn Olivieri, Nix was Nika Futterman, Wolfe was Michael Ensign and Bertrand was Graham James Mctavish (what a name!).

Michael Ensign played a Judge on Boston Legal and was also in Titanic (among his many credits). I liked his performance as Wolfe.

Dawn Olivieri (hotness alert) played Lydia on Heros (among various credits).

Nika Futterman does tons of voice work in games and TV animation such as Star Wars The Clone Wars.

the cell BE is/was the PS3's not-so-secret weapon. When Devs use it in conjunction with the RSX - they way it's intended to be done - the PS3 is capable of some phenomenal results that can put just about anything else to shame. I read a story today that Crytek say that MS will reveal the Nextbox at the next E3, and subtly suggested that Sony might too. All I can say is, that if Sony evolves the PS3 design and adds an additional CellBE's worth of cores along with a modern GPU and modern amounts of system and video memory, there will be nothing to stand against it.

I think expanding on the GPU will help the weak multiplat devs to make better experiences and expanding the Cell will help 1st party devs make top notch exclusives. For whatever reason Multiplats seem to ignore the cell and try to run in the gpu.

I remember reading a sucker punch interview. They said that with infamous they realized they were doin everything on the "slow side" of the PS3. And now with infamous 2 they learned how to do things on the "fast" side. I think reading in-between the lines they went from a purely RSX rendering engine in the first game to a very Cell-centric rendering engine with Infamous 2. And while it can bog down under heavy load, there's no denying the sheer volume of content (lighting, effects, enemies, geometry etc.) that is a cut above the rest on open world design.

Texture detail is the only area I see that is relatively on par with other games like AC. not surprising seeing that textures are stored in, or streamed into, the RAM which is about the same for 360 and ps3 in capacity.

Oh I forgot to highlight Infamous 2's self shadowing. It's sharp and well implemented. Many games use that crappy blocky-feathered edge shadowing garbage, not so in Infmaous 2.

But this Uncharted 3 game. Hot dang. That looks like a true blue soft shadowing system they have in place that fittingly looks more realistic in softer ambient light conditions, not to mention a processing hog. I hope ND does a behind the scenes feature on how they implemented that.

Temjin,

It sounds like all Sucker punch have to do now is figure out how to let the Cell do the heavy lifting where it's best suited, and how to hand off to the RSX where it's best suited, then perhaps they won't see any areas where the system bogs down.

I wish they'd figure out a way to make CGI teeth not looks like shiny rocks. I don't know if it's because they're making teeth too white or if it's the lighting, but it almost always looks creepy.

I like the new models better. Chloe's eyes freaked me out in the second one.

Hmmm... This has been a debate since the beginning of this generation. A mainstream example would be Xbox 360 vs. PS3 graphics. Sharp & colourful or soft & smooth? The former has jagg and plastic-y problems, whilst the latter would normally be panned for it's lack of colour contrast and slight blurriness.

I would say U3 reaches that category. Skin tone definately looks better on the above picture, however judging by the pictures alone, the clothing doesn't look as defined as Uncharted 2's, and the shadows aren't darker either. Definately more refined shadows though.

------------------

Either way we'll see what approach Naughty Dog has decided pathe with; it's still nitpicking at the end of the day.

I like it and think it makes for better game design.

These are just two screenshots. Seriously it says nothing at all, you could take any number of screenshots from cutscenes or gameplay from Uncharted 2 and get the same type of differences depending on the scene, lighting, angle and how close the characters are.

To make something of a proper comparison you at least need a similar screenshot from both games.

Oh and based on the screenshots, I think U3 looks much better on Chloe and U2 looks slightly better on Elena, so again this says nothing.

LOL! This is off topic but did anyone see the jab Sucker Punch took at MS in inFAMOUS 2? There is a store in New Marias called "Red Rings" and there's a sign in the window that says "We Fix All Systems".

My buddy just sent me a picture he took with his phone. Comedy Gold!

In my books, someone who wears a power suit armor isn't a bad ass.

I think it looks good. Closing in on a more 'realistic' look - albeit a bit on the airbrushed looking side at the moment.

I think the image of Elena shows this quite well.

It would be difficult I guess to think that human's in games would be photo-realistic - like cars do in Gran Turismo 5 (and Forza 4) - but then again I remember thinking that the graphics in the first Tomb Raider "just couldn't get any better!" ...

Very much looking forward to Uncharted 3 ...

Yeah, the pics from the third game look phenomenal, but did anyone else think that Elena just didn't quite look like Elena? Eh, don't care it'll be a great game regardless.

very subtle differences which is better is purely subjective.
i prefer the top one, gives a smoother less wax like look.
one thing i REALLY want to see in all games from now on is brighter colors!
everything these days for some reason is either grey and brown ala resistance or brighter colors but darker tones of them ala uncharted 2.
compare the forest level in uncharted 2 to some forest in uncharted 1.
the original has bright luscious greens for the grass, trees and such.
2 has a real dark almost ivory green to it.
we need more bright vibrant colors, like bulletstorm that was a color frenzy!
sick of all these dark toned, or two toned games!
makes me feel like im watching a dreary WW2 video!
