Japanese Gamers Love Yakuza...But Not The Undead?
Yakuza is big in Japan. The latest entry debuted at #1 on the sales charts...but something might be amiss.
It's true that Yakuza: Of The End was the best-selling game in Japan by a large margin, coming in at nearly 300,000 copies sold.
But as Kotaku pointed out, that total isn't as high as either of the last two Yakuza installments; Yakuza 3 sold 372,000 copies during its first week and Yakuza 4 did even better with 384,000. So why the drop? There's an even larger PS3 user base in Japan so it should stand to reason that Of The End should've been close to 400,000 during its first week of availability. ...maybe it's because a few fans aren't too thrilled with the addition of zombies and third-person shooter elements.
Fans don't like it when developers change things, and zombies and guns represent large alterations for Yakuza. Might it be safe to assume that such a feature has actually hurt the series...?
