Sony: We Won't Discuss The PS4 "For Quite Some Time"
Sony has reiterated their intention for the PlayStation 3: ten years or more.
And although many rumors have been circulating concerning Sony's next piece of hardware, SCEA president Jack Tretton says gamers shouldn't hold their breath for the PS4. Tretton spoke to Forbes about a variety of topics, including the recently revealed PlayStation Vita, and said the PS3 is "really just hitting its stride."
"And technologically, I don't think it's possible to provide any advancement beyond what we have. What we've seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. We invested heavily in that, we rolled a very heavy rock up a steep hill, through the launch period. But now I think that all pays off, and we've got a long run way behind it. So, I wouldn't look for any discussion of a next-generation PlayStation for quite some time."
As far as most gamers are concerned, that's just fine. The PS3 has a long way to go and developers agree that right now, the machine is hitting its stride. Many also believe it's the only current platform left that has more potential; i.e., we haven't seen the best the PS3 has to offer just yet. Obviously, the announcement of the Wii U and the rumblings of a new Xbox haven't forced Sony's hand; no jumping the gun concerning the PS4.

Now I wish they'd go away lol
It seems everyone in the industry has something to say about the next gen and when it will start etc.
But seeing that this story is straight from Sony themselves instead of some other dev making stuff up, it's good to know where Sony stands on the matter.
I have tons of games to play and not a whole lot of money in the next couple years, so I'm good with the consoles I've got for now.

I know what you mean.
As of a few days ago, I've now got 134 PS3 games, with at least a good 75+= that are in backlog mode.
And seeing how the USPS also broke my 2 week old 640 HD when they smashed my Phat princess, which I had over 50 game saves that I can't no longer retrieve off of it that were between 2/3 to almost completed, now I'll have to re-play all of them again just to finish those up too.

As fas as PS4 well we still have to see some smaller plastic mold cases for the PS3, then theres a faster blu ray drive being looked at for ps3, smaller i.e? 22 nm chips that are less costly to make, etc.
Long way to go yet on the ps3 road.

When I purchase my new laptop at the end of the year, or just after Christmas when the prices drop, I won't mind how long the PS4 takes to materialise. I will have the PC for the games I feel would do well on it, and my PS3 for the exclusives and my favourite IP's I enjoy currently...

Both my roommates are/were pc guys for a long time. One owns a local computer store where all they do really is build custom PC's. The other is his "builder" I guess you could say, I don't know his job title. They both still play their PC's for games like rift and wow and Starcraft. But everything else is for their PS3's. They just got into consoles this gen about 2 years ago, and it's apparent they only look back for the games they can't get on consoles. Not to mention one roomate actually sold his gaming PC when KZ3 came out.
It seems in your case, it'll be a good fit. But for others they are not adding a PC but actually leaning more towards the consoles. I don't know but it says a lot about a console when hardcore PC players are willing to convert to consoles for their main gaming experience.

I love both PC and the PS3, but when I play on PC I don't feel comfortable because I've always been playing consoles since I was young and that's where I have been for so long so it feels more natural to me. I'm not saying I hate PC I love it just don't have a very good PC.

all i know is sony better be ready to luanch with a powerful new console the minute ms is ready. i don't think sony can afford to let ms get a system out before them. it didn't work last gen, and ms has a lot of momentum now.

$ony yet again contradicting themselves!
was i dreaming, or did we not see a few articles on it this week?
how can he say theres no way to make advancements?
what, theres no hardware out there that could advance whats in the ps3?
what a crock of sh*t!
dunno WTF hes talking about with the competition adding features already available with the ps3.
last time i checked the ps3 does not have kinect styled support, nor does it have touch screens in its controllers, nor can it stream gameplay to the controller.
is it just me, or do sony have the most arrogant employees?

I read awhile on g4, (when the kinect was fairely new ) that modder managed to make a mod that allowed the kinect be work and be used on the ps3's xmb menu.
Whle your right that it doesn't have games that support kinect, the kinect can be used on the ps3. So yes, the ps3 does have kinect styled support. In a sense anyways. But still.
Next.

whatever Sony does i just hope they dont turn into a casual system with PS4. I stand its business & can increase profit but is money worth losing gaming..... i play VG for interaction in worlds created by those with thoughtful aspects. make sure yall dont forget those who are the foundation of gaming not these folks who purchase a game for online & only play Vg since its in style now.

If I remember correctly, in the past, console manufacturers were the only ones who could pull the most potential out of their machines. They would then release new development tools and techniques to developers, to help them make games better while speeding up development time. It makes me wonder if Sony holds out on certain things until a time that they deem appropriate.
It seems Sony has something up their sleeve, other than deodorant, that's keeping them from sweating over the competition.
