FFXIII Has Moved Over 6 Million Copies

So, how many copies do you think Final Fantasy XIII sold?

According to the game's producer, Yoshinori Kitase, the game was a definite commercial success, shifting over 6 million copies. This is a little ironic because several years ago, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada said the company's goal for FFXIII was, in fact, 6 million. Said Kitase:

"If we were going to make a numbered title, obviously we’d have to make it from scratch, and that takes a really long time. Final Fantasy XIII only came out in March of last year, so literally only over a year, so it’s quite a short turnaround. Because Final Fantasy XIII has been so popular, we’ve also enjoyed commercial success – shifting over 6 million copies – so instead of taking a long time to make a new Final Fantasy title, we wanted to make a direct sequel."

So that's why they wanted to produce another FF title so quickly. We keep thinking they believe an annual installment rate for their flagship franchise will somehow erase the publisher's financial woes. But hey, the developers supposedly took fan feedback into account for FFXIII-2, so maybe that'll sell 8 million. Who knows?

That's all great. I can even see some happy faces in a land far away. The only problem is we were not paying for their work. We were paying for their reputation, and there is very little of it left.

Well said. It was the Final Fantasy name that sold the 6 million copies. This reminds me of those bad movies that advertise the product as "same director as Titanic and Avatar"

I say tell them to take out Final Fantasy then add "developed by the same team as Final Fantasy Series" and we'll see how many copies you can sell riding on content alone. I gurrantee the sales drop to 1.5 million.

I am pretty sure that I have read an article before (not from here) that he's confident that it'll reach 10 million by being multi-platform.

I personally am excited for XIII-2. They've only showed off a small bit of the game but it looks promising to me.

Well... I'm no analyst but I don't see XIII-2 doing as well as XIII. A lot of people, myself included, bought XIII because it was a beautiful looking new entry in my most beloved of RPG franchises. Despite the fact that FFXIII was a good game I, like many, was disappointed with it as a Final Fantasy game. XIII-2 will not join my collection until it hits the bargain bin, if I'm still interested.

I think I just said in another thread about the differences between the head honchos in publishing versus the developers. Guys like Wada remain "out of touch" as far as fans are concerned, and guys like Kojima berate the industry.

It just goes to show that there are more members to these video game teams than just people passionate about games. Some are merely passionate about business.

As a result, until these business guys like Wada actually become invested into the games themselves, this is a trend that will continue. The -only- thing that can change it, really, is if people vote with their wallets.

If the FF franchise begins to falter, we may see the return to what we love. If not, it may be time to face the fact that games for guys like me simply aren't made anymore. Maybe I'm just an old fart in the industry that can't adapt to change. Perhaps it is nearing the time that I finally "grow up out of video games". I begin a slow phasing (over years :p) by not buying FFXIII-2 until bargain bin. Perhaps I'll even break my own rules and buy it used, if I can bring myself to that.

Maybe people don't want what I think they do, afterall. Perhaps turn based mechanics and "archaic" mechanics that exist outside of a linear kill tube are not what people want.

Many of us have been saying for a long time, "FFXIII is not what fans want. It's a departure. It's a fail-fantasy, not a final one."

Apparently, they've hit and will continue to exceed their goal.

Apparently, we were wrong.

It's just one game though isn't it? There haven't been a lot of 'failed' Final Fantasy games. From what I've read X-2 wasn't so hot but that was also technically a spin-off as is XIII-2. I think the millions of disappointed fans would attest that you are definitely not the only one who prefers the old (myself included). Ya old fart! =^.^=

Since I've started looking, I've still yet to find this game for ps3. I may have to break down and order it online. I was kind of hoping to avoid that as I get tired of waiting for things I order to arrive.

I'm still gonna give this game a chance, although my perspective of what afinal fantasy should be is damn near identical to everyones here at psxe.

I know ahead of time this won't be an ff game on the same caliber as ff8, but its an ff. Atleast in name.

Brand recognition will only go so far.

I am excited for XIII-2 but most of us agree that XIII would of been a better title had it not been a Final Fantasy and been its own game. Maybe its because we set the bar too high for Final Fantasy titles that it was set up to fail or marginally disappoint the long time fans.

I bought FFXIII and was dissapointed as a final fantasy fan. I thought it was good but as a final fantasy game they made so many changes to try to appeal to a wider audience that it didn't feel like any FF game i ever played.. All it did for me was make me want to play the older final fantasy games when they still cared about there fans. If XIII"2 is like XIII i think it will be the first final fantasy i won’t buy so i hope the 6 million copies sold was worth destroying final fantasy

An annual Final Fantasy game? Wow, Square-Enix. How far down do you intend to go? Haven't you hit rock-bottom yet?

Anyway, as much as XIII-2 is at least interesting (to me) because of the apparent consideration of "fan feedback", I would like to know more about Versus XIII and Type-0. You know, those other games that S-E announced years ago? Where are they? Being ported to another console as we speak?

Final Fantasy releases were always spaced out and always considered successful in years past. If SE decides to make FF series an annual thing, its going to be clear that they dont have the confidence that they once had in the one franchise that made them.

How many years did we all grind on Final Fantasy VII before Final Fantasy VIII was released? Both sucessful FF's that were not released a year apart from each other.

Nice to know. I'd like to see the eventual sell through rates of FFXIII-2. It'll be a better indication of whether the general populace thinks that they're going in the right direction. Sadly, I know that I'll be picking it up, though like the original, I'll wait for a price drop. That being said, I'm infinitely more interested in Versus and Agito.

If you are from Norway, then you are probably correct. Flåklypa Grand Prix has aksi grossed more than the entire population of Norway. LOL I'll be watching that when I get home tonight or maybe tomorrow. It's not Christmas, but hey, nothing wrong with that, right? Hahaha!

No Beamboom, I'm not Norwegian. LOL I just have friends from all over and they tell me stuff. I then happen to be a sponge for anything cultural. So yeah, that's how I learned of Flåklypa Grand Prix. LOL If you want proof that I'm not Norwegian, the only Norsk words I could tell you are "snakkes snart" and the ubiquitous "Faen!" I'm not directing that to you or anybody here, btw. Hahaha!

And no, I'm not in Australia. I'm in the Philippines instead. You're quite close though. LOL

so in other words, instead of putting in the effort and bringing a new fully fledged game and bringing the series back to what the fans love and expect from FF, we decided to turn the content we cut from the first game into a so called sequel.

I somehow don't think after the backlash of XIII that XIII-2 will sell as well. I'll be getting it for sure, but I still would have rather seen a new FF title all together.

i still have this game unopened =( just thinking of the battle system puts me off... not sure why I brought it at launch... but im a big fan of squaresoft/enix and I always buy their game at launch. but now i have to reconsider
