Capcom Explains Away The "No Save Reset" Fiasco

Capcom's response to the whole fiasco: "Oh we so did not mean it that way!"

A few days ago, the gaming world was a-buzz with what appeared to be another publisher ploy to combat used game sales. It was the unwanted feature in Resident Evil: Mercenaries for the Nintendo 3DS that wouldn't allow the player to reset the save data. The reason for this bizarre drawback? The publisher gave us the answer in their official forums. Said Capcom community specialist Shawn Baxter:

"There was no intention of lessening the experience of the game. Essentially, RE: Mercs was treated like an arcade fighting game. You unlock characters, levels, etc and they just stay unlocked as they would in an arcade machine. There was no hidden motive to prevent buying used copies. It's not some secret form of DRM. It's simply the way we designed the save system to work with the arcade type of gameplay."

Baxter added that Mercenaries doesn't have a traditional story mode and every mission can be replayed. Hence, no content would be inaccessible if someone else wanted to play the game later. The bottom line is that this title is based around a hardcore arcade-style experience, and that's what Capcom was going for. So we don't have to worry about anything pertaining to the used game market, and that's that.

LOL! That's the explanation I suggested the other day. Innocent enough...I think they miscalculated the response to it though.

"I think that they actually screwed up. It's a survival action game, and by not allowing the save to reset, you can't go backwards in your playthrough, only forwards, The no reset feature forces the player to play through the game - in true survival action fashion. Once you complete an element you can go back and replay it, but you can't replay the whole game from the beginning. I think it was meant to be a 'cute' feature that increased the tension of the game. I just don't think that they thought through the impact of the no-reset thing. "

Glad to hear it was a misunderstanding but I still stand by what I said, They need to get back into the habit of making good games, games people want to keep in their collections and not trade in.

This makes sense, but I like the feeling of playing over from the beginning and unlocking things again. I just passed the 200 lives mark in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and the game is getting kind of boring now, so I'll probably reset it and start over again to give me the challenge I want from it. Mercenaries isn't quite the same type of game, so it probably won't matter too much, but if I were to own it, I'd like to at least have the option.

So he says. I'm glad this got the controversy it deserved. These are not good decisions being made.

But you're still in a position whereby if you pick this up as preowned, some degree of the game unlocks will have already been done for you. Possibly all of them. This also means any trophies unlocked by the previous owner would be inaccessible to the 2nd owner.

or am I still missing something?

Not really sure how the 3ds works but I am guessing you won't get any trophies. Trophies are for the PS3. Still stinks that you could possibly pick up a game that already has everything unlocked for you. Oh well.

talk about a company shooting itself in the foot. they got a ton a negative press, and retailers refusing to carry the game. very poor judgement on their part.

Oh, I didn't realize that this was a basher type of game. Still, I think that it is a bad idea that you can't reset the saved game file.
