PS Plus Celebrates Anniversary With "Birthday Bonus Months"

Believe it or not, PlayStation Plus has already been around for one year, and it's time to celebrate the anniversary.

Along with the multiple reasons to be a member - free content, discounts, early beta access, additional exclusive features, etc. - Sony has given you another incentive: as revealed at the PlayStation Blog, the "Birthday Bonus Months" offer is here. When you buy a 1-year membership, you'll get 3 extra months free, and if you sign up for the 3-month membership, you'll get 1 additional month. They also wanted to highlight the main reasons to have a subscription:

  • More than 50 Free Games
  • Over 100 Free DLC Items (Add-ons, Avatars, Themes)
  • 170+ Discounts
  • Over 100 Exclusives and Early Access items
  • $800+ in Savings

For a nominal fee, you can really enhance your Network experience. Of course, the recent PSN unpleasantness may have soured some on the service, but Sony has reported that over 90% of overall usage has returned, so that's good news.

Additional *main* reason, enhanced services - CLOUD SAVES.

Sony talked big about cloud based saves with Vita, right now you need to be a Plus member for cloud saves to work on the PS3, and I bet that doesn't change any time soon.

You nailed it highlander. I signed up last night for the $50 15 month deal, and cloud saves was a big part of that decision. I've been on the fence, but that feature was just the push I needed.

I love the term "FREE"
Free as in after you've paid for the membership.
No, once my actually FREE PSN membership expires, I'll be leaving this service alone.

Yep, Captain Grump Face strikes again.
It's okay, my psycho stimulate withdrawals (abstaining from heavy caffeine consumption) should be over by tomorrow.. I hope. Oh man, I do hope.

@Temji, You should start to feel better in a day or two. I felt fully recovered in about a week. Crazy how the older we get the harder our caffeine withdrawals get. I was seriously popping two or three Advil every 4 hours the first few days I was off the black stuff. It's been about two weeks now. I feel great.

@Frylock, No A&W Rootbeer? ;)

I drink like 5 coffee's a day, and I have no troubles from it. I'm young so I guess thats the reason. Funny, I'm not addicted or anything (I once went a whole 6 months without it)...I just love the taste! Especially as soon as your wake up..mmm :)

What I mean is like all the free games offered at the beginning of the plus member ship when it began.

What abotu discounts??

Is everything that is offered only for a limited time?

nope, sorry jawk. they take down older offers. they announce it on the psblog during the weekly ps store updates. they tell you its your last chance to download this games.

btw, does is there still anyone who dont have access to the uncharted 3 beta? everyone has access to it with plus, i already downloaded mine so my infamous 2 uncharted beta code is unused and sony just sent me an email saying that i already have access to the uncharted 3 beta but heres another code you can give away, hahaha.

Yea, I just looked a few minutes ago. You're right. I don't follow the Playstation blog so I wasn't aware. They must have started taking stuff down not too long ago because Wipeout HD was still available several months after they added it to plus.

Oh, I too have an extra Uncharted 3 beta code if anyone without plus is interested.

awe crap now I think playstation plus isn't worth it anymore. I guess I should of signed up early to take great advantage if these deals earlier but now I guess I am too late.

Oh well I might get ps plus depending on what other features besides free games and discounts. That's great and all but the only coolest thing is cloud storage. If they incorperate more features I am surely to get it.

I was a bit hesitant for like a month lol....I dont like criticsizing services at beginning knoing there's possibilities of a rocky start. yea...plus started off slow as I thought it would...over time you start seeing the benefits. Even with the outage happenning, i can see me contiung with the service. Ton of discounts...free themes (which I purchased alot)free avatars (again...purchased alot)Early demos...very appreciated (mastered scorpion well in advance of game release) Free games (some bought and some I enjoyed but wouldnt have bought n missed out on great games) and well cloud saving..i've also been in 7 betas over year...well this includes uncharted 3 beta

They already have...quite a few, in fact. I started after Xmas and there were duplicates between then and the outage. I think a few have appeared 3 times in the first year.

The big games may not repeat, but I'm sure the lesser ones will continue to reappear periodically.

im actually thinkin about getting 2 years worth for an extra 6 months. if i get my buddy to get them from his work i can save $5 which amounts to the tax on it. $45 for 15 months of plus is an even better deal ;)

hmm.. i see what you did there sony, clever. you give new users a month of ps plus then when it expires, its about time for your 1 year plus 3 month deal. my plus expires in december but i dont think i'll renew it. it gave me alot of games but mostly not the ones i wanted. got me free map packs too but other than cloud saves i dont see a point on renewing. maybe next time when theres something i finally wanted, or i get a job.

No, Plus is a year old - hence the anniversary/birthday thing. When they launched Plus you could buy a full year and get 3 months extra free (which I did), this is no differnet from that offer.

true, but when you look at wipeout and other games, theres no expiration date. my wipeout stays i hope because its part of the welcome back program. i download those free themes and avatars too but i dont use it. i got my infamous pro playstation rewards which is pretty unique on my friend list and i made my own ps3 themes complete with gundam mobile suits and characters (gundam 00) for icons and about 15 gorgeous women on background that rotates/switches everytime i go into the main menu. i want to make a new one but i dont have the right tools/program to make it just the way i want it.

I'll have to go back and double check. I am not sure that the games you purchase (at a discount) are time limited.

This is from the PS Plus FAQ;

"The content you have downloaded as part of your PlayStation Plus subscription at *no charge* is only accessible as long as you are an active subscriber. The exceptions are free themes and avatars, which you will continue to have access to, even if you are no longer a subscriber. Anything you have *purchased* (even if you purchased it at a discount) will remain available to you even if your subscription ends."

In other words, if it's a game you got for free, it will expire with your subscription, but re-enable if you re-up. If you paid for it, even at a high discount, it's yours to keep no matter what. The exception is the stuff like avatars and themes. I think that add-on content for games you have purchased remains with you as well (though I can't be 100% sure on that one).

Edit (I rewrote to clarify my original):

It boils down to this.

Anything you pay for under PS Plus, even if you only pay a penny is yours to keep forever.

Anything you got free as part of PS Plus is tied to your PS Plus subscription and is activated only while your PS Plus subscription is active.

So, if your subscription ends, that free content is deactivated until you re-subscribe. The only exceptions are the free avatars and themes, those you can keep regardless, but any PSN game, mini, PSOne classic or DLC you get for free is only available while you are an active subscriber.

no thanks!
after the BS they have put me through with getting my account back, 7 months and counting!
paying for 1 years subscription and only getting 5 months.
i wont be touching plus ever again with a 50 foot barge pole!
as a friend asked me on saturday what do you get with plus?
i said oh just a few discounts and sometimes a beta access.
he said so your paying to save money, kinda pointless no?
i said yea well, pay 100 bucks a year to get discounts is pretty counterproductive.
especially if your like me and buy maybe 1 PSN game a year!
sony needs to find other ways to entice people into plus.
maybe early access to DLC for games, or special passes to launch events, something like that.
something everyone would want, and everyone would use.
no point paying for discounts, especially if your not going to use them in the first place!
like paying for a book of coupons then letting it sit in the draw.
they need to fix the automatic download feature too.
fantastic idea, but as ive said a million times not everyone lives in japan with unlimited download usages!
automatically downloads everything, even the crap i dont need!
they need to bring up a filter, make it that the ps3 tells you ok tomorrow this is the crap available with the automatic download features, please tick what you want downloaded.
no point bringing me 10 tons of bricks if i only need 2!

With the immediate danger of sounding like a broken record: When you have to pay a monthly feel to access something it's not "free". That's "rental".
You are paying £40 a year in rental for accessing the games that's labelled "free". It may be worth it to you, by all means, but it just ain't free.
