PSP Remaster Series Engine Detailed

The PSP Remaster series kicks off in Japan this year, and they've revealed the engine that will bring great portable experiences to the PS3.

Dubbed simply the "PSP Engine," Kentaro Suzuki has presented the new technology at the Games Tools & Middleware Forum in Tokyo, with a brief explanation of what to expect. Unsurprisingly, high-definition rendering tops the list but check out the full details:

  • High-resolution rendering
  • Dual analogue control support from the Dualshock 3/Six-axis controller
  • 3D stereoscopic output
  • Ad-hoc Party unification
  • Main memory and graphic memory expansion
  • Common save data

That pretty much covers all the bases, doesn't it? The new program will begin with Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 3rd and will expand from there; what are some PSP titles you want to see enter the PSP Remaster series? We already know we're getting Peace Walker in HD as part of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid collection, so what else is on your list?

Will these games be playable on the PS Vita as well?

I would love to have that second analog stick used on the go on Vita with updated HD visuals for the God of Wars, MGS Peacewalker, Kingdom Hearts BBS, GTA Liberty and Vice City Stories, Crisis Core FF VII, 3rd Birthday, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Echochrome, Silent Hill Origins and Resistance Retribution.

Anyone know if it'll happen? PSP Remaster cross compatability between PS3 and Vita?

I'm thinking that we'll see the 'PSP Engine' again on the Vita for PSP backwards compatibility...

I hear ya dude, it better be compatible with the vita. sony has to include a code to download the digital version off the store sos that i can install the game on my vita and take it with me wherever i go. cross "platform" compatibility has to start with these remastered versions, if sony really wants to show off the true potential of the vita that is.

Sony's already confirmed that downloadable PSP games will be compatible, so I figure that the PSP Engine will be the basis for running PSP titles on Vita.

I agree. I really wanted to get into that game but the controls ruined it for me. They improved them greatly in Peace Walker. Portable Ops would benefit from overhauled DS3 controls.

Not going to happen - this generation. Next generation perhaps, but the hardware can't handle it this generation, the PS2 contained a GPU that can best be described as a beast and is near impossible to emulate through software.

well i for one mr. lander, refuse to believe that the ps3 does not have the horsepower to emulate the ps2 engine...

@Cesar_ser_4

The high speed memory in the Graphics Synthesizer chip is incredibly tricky to emulate.

That's why the last 80GBs with software PS2 emulation just emulated the Emotion Engine in software. A Physical GS chip was still present assisting the PS3.

Cesar,

You can refuse to believe it all you want, the internal bandwidth on the GS is more than the RSX can manage, and would nearly saturate the internal data bus on the Cell - on it's own. It's very difficult to emulate that adequately.

If anyone can write a PS2 emulation, it's Sony. Sony hasn't and they've had plenty of reason to do it, but haven't. Even to the point of remastering games. There will be no PS2 emulation running in software on the PS3, you need the GS hardware at least.

I was just kidding guys. lets just hope sony doesnt decide to go with another exotic architecture again next gen, rendering the last gen software useless like this gen has.

Sony's smartest decision in gaming so far has been their custom architectures. The PS1 was the phenomenon is was thanks to their engineering. PS2 was/is the world beater that it is thanks to their engineers, and the PS3 is absolutely as good as it is thanks to their engineers. So I trust that the PS4 will continue that trend.

Their most likely path is to evolve the PS3 essentially doubling the number of cores and upgrading the CPU design to the most recent revisions of the cores. That ought to produce a system between 3 and 4 times more powerful than the PS3, and a new GPU would be several times better than the RSX also. That would be a system with sufficient power to emulate all the PlayStations before it.

Sorry, personally not really bothered about playing PSP games on my PS3.

It's a bit of a backwards step especially with such a backlog I've already got with proper AAA PS3 titles.

Bit like using your PC as a Commodore 64 emulator...

Wait a minute!!!

Lots of people run emulators (eg MAME) on their PCs, as you know, so I think you're defeating your own argument there. As for it being a backward step, it's nothing of the sort. I think this is a steppingstone to making the PSP's downloadable games available on the Vita via emulation using a Vita version of the PSP Engine.

If nothing else, it let's us get an early taste of the ability to play a game on the PSP and the PS3 and move the save file back and forth as you go.

Yeah, I definitely think that Crisis Core would be a great beneficiary of this engine.

Of course, Valkyria Chronicles is the absolute best option. Those games really BELONG in HD on a tv.
