ICO, SotC HD Trailers Make Us Ache
Yes, we have to wait until September 27 before we can appreciate the newfound glory of the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.
We really, really want it. And we know that if Sony keeps releasing trailers like these, time will just slow to a crawl...nearly 3 months is a long time. Below you will find a couple trailers promoting the high-definition remakes of both classic titles; as you can see, the artistry we adored years ago has found new life with a beautiful new, refined style.
Isn't that pretty? And the majesty of SotC is captured nicely as well.
They're being released separately in Japan but will likely only be available in the US as part of the aforementioned collection. However they arrive, we really don't care at this point...just get here.

It seems to me like you all already own these games, so why not just play them on your ps2? Wouldn't you rather they spent time creating *new* games instead of re-releasing old stuff you've already paid for once - and already played at least once?
To me all these remakes/collections most of all remind me of the "remastered" music albums on CD ("digital remasters") - in other words: Milk cows.
Apparently there is a market for it, just like the digital remasters, I just don't understand the excitement?

I ask myself, "would I want to buy my old favourites on PC or the Amiga *again*?"... I really don't think so, not when I got them stored in my basement!

I mean, it's not like we are short on *new* great releases these days...!
NB I am not dissing anyone here, I am merely trying to understand.

The fact that you don't understand this troubles me. Even though you may not want to see/play PS2 games in HD doesn't mean you're unable to understand the basic concepts behind someone wanting to.

But you got a point, I made a poor example there with my titles. Ok let me try another experiment of thought then: Mass Effect 2. I *loved* that game more than anything. But would I want a "ME2 HD upgrade" for the PS4? In fact I do not think so, I'd much rather want a ME4!

Your example of ME2 being ported to a PS4 doesn't hold up. First we don't even know what the leap will be in graphics from the PS3 to the PS4 and ME2 is already an HD game, unlike all the PS2 ports which were all in standard definition.
Also like I've already mentioned, giving these games an HD makeover is not a time consuming task nor does it take up the developers time to the point they can't work on new things. Hell I'm pretty sure all the work is outsourced. So you can have your cake and eat it too.

But, fans want this and newcomers need it. I never played GOW until the collection hit, now I'm a GOW fan. Depends on the game I guess. And this seems like one of those collections that won't do to well once it hits since neither on of these games were big hits back on the PS2 and it coming out during a bad time of the year is the September date is set in stone.

You have to realize there are different types of gamers. I myself cannot go through a game more than once. I have tried it MANY times and end up quitting about 1/4 of the way through the second outing.
It's just the way my brain works. I have a very short attention span, so if a game has a deep story, and I have to sit through cut-scenes, my brain just flies somewhere else.
I also don't care for any multiplayer, except FIFA. You couldn't pay me to play a shooter online. I've tried it, and it seems pointless to me. I just cannot shoot people over and over, get killed over and over and enjoy it.
I wish I did, because people I know have a lot of fun doing that. But I just can't.
The most I can do is play maybe 3-4 matches in FIFA online and then I gotta stop. And that's because while I play FIFA I tend to analyze tactics and I truly enjoy the beautiful game.
Stop saying that his point of view "troubles" you. That's a very cheap way of trying to make his opinion seem crazy.

Did you even read what I wrote? I never said his point of view troubled me. Also he was the one not understanding things. He mentioned he didn't understand why people wanted these HD ports. So I'm not sure why you're telling me I didn't understand his view since I spent several posts countering it.
Having difficulty understanding why someone would want to play some of the greatest PS2 games in HD graphics on their PS3 is shameful.

In addition, many people don't have their ps2 anymore and don't have the backwards compatible ps3 version, thus when they find out they can play their favorite classics, like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, in revamped HD, it's a welcome opportunity.

Seriously though he was offering beamboom clear and honest examples of why people would want some of the PS2' best offerings in HD on the PS3.
Beamboom- in reference to your ME2 example; going from SD to HD is a huge leap something we never experienced last gen, while your example is something we can already experience with other games this gen.
I'll tell you why I like these collections and maybe help out a little. I like these collections for the reason that a lot of these games I havnt experienced, SoTC being one of them! I know shame, shame. Anyways another reason is because they are in HD with updated graphics. I use that because when GoW2 released I had my PS3 for a few months and really (at the time) didn't understand why it wasn't for PS3. I wanted it to be an awesome looking PS3 game, not arguably the best looking PS2 game. So when it and the original released in HD as a collection for the PS3 I got the upgrade to HD and updated polish that I wanted.
Now with each and every HD collection that releases I get to experience my fav. PS2 games in HD the way I wanted to experience GoW2 and that just makes me happy.
That's all there is to it for me. Its a fresh feeling for me and that's enough despite the same gameplay and story as you mentioned. But if I like a game enough it'll get multiple playthroughs, so, this isn't much different.

Just because HD remakes don't excite me, doesn't mean they aren't exciting to other people. If it gives Sony extra cash and the developers extra cash to make better games, then right on.

I loved ICO and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2. But my PS2 is packed up in a cupboard meaning I'd have to hook it all up just to play ICO or Shadow of the Colossus again.
Not only that, but ICO didn't have widescreen presentation. SotC did, but both games look very pixellated on an HD TV. SotC also lagged like all hell on PS2 cos it pushed the PS2 hardware to its very limit!!!
Since the games also had an emotional impact on us gamers who played it several years ago, we would love to revisit that same emotional impact but this time on our PS3's, in high definition at 60 fps. And in 3D for those with 3D TV's. The PS2 versions are old and slightly archaic looking, and many don't have their PS2's anymore or have them sitting in a cupboard like me. PS2 can't handle 1080p at 60fps, especially for SotC.
So basically, we fans want to revisit an emotional game that had a deep impact on us with better picture quality.
If you'd like to see proof, just YouTube the flying Colossus on PS2, look at the point where the main guy jumps onto its wing when it swoops, and you'll see a big difference compared to what they showed in that trailer.
PS2 - one frame, you're jumping, next frame, you're on the wing, next frame, you're 20 feet in the air.
PS3 - smooth animation with no lag of jumping, grabbing the Colossi's wing and being swept into the air.

@Dancemachine: The thing about the framerate, if that is true, then this is *much* more than a hd upgrade imo. Then it makes much more sense. I thought this was just "the same at a higher resolution" kind of deal. If they were close to unplayable in segments before (judging from your 2-frames-a-second description) then I can of course better understand the excitement.
But still! You all have played it, you've "been there done that". Ok so it doesn't stutter as much as it did on the ps2, but do that make you want to play the entire thing again? That's what I just can't see myself wanting to do. And so the case stands. :)
@Chaos theory: Quoting, "have you ever bought a bluray version of a movie that you already have in DVD" now *that's* the best question asked in this thread.
Have I? Well... Yes.
But I still think there is a difference. A movie is a one-way, two-hour entertainment break I can sit back and enjoy. A game is very different imo.
So, yes, I've bought blu-ray versions of movies I've already got on DVD. However, of the hundreds of movies I own in total it's maybe a question of 5-6 blu-ray duplicates. Not more. And they were *really* cheap too!

They are only similar in the artistry, it is a bit hard to compare but, I don't think you would like to miss either one of them. To be honest from a story stand point I still love Ico the most... well even on a gameplay standpoint I still prefer Ico, the levels and puzzles are some of the best in any game I have ever played. That being said, climbing giants and bringing them down gave me some of the most memorable moments in gaming... The one thing I can tell you for sure, is that if you liked SoTC, you will enjoy Icon immensely :)
