Bethesda Compares "Hardcore" Call Of Duty To Skyrim

Fans have been quick to accuse Square Enix of failing to cater to their fans while attempting to appeal to a larger mainstream audience.

But Bethesda isn't about to annoy their hardcore followers. When asked about "accessibility" - i.e., satisfying the ardent role-players versus ushering in new fans - studio design director Todd Howard told Gamasutra that such a question isn't "something that we think about a lot." The bottom line is they've obtained quite a large audience by making games they want to make, and as far as accessibility goes:

"We want to remove confusion, that's what I'd say. As opposed to making it more accessible, we'd like to remove confusion for anyone who's playing. What we're trying to do now is lead you into it more... In our games or others' games, they give you a character menu and say, 'Who do you want to be, what powers do you want?' [Players think,] 'I don't know, I haven't played yet!'

What happens in Oblivion is you start the game, play for three hours, and then think 'I want to start over, I chose wrong.' So we'd like to sort of alleviate some of that. I also think the controls work better [too] ... it's more elegant."

Then Howard makes an interesting observation: he says Call of Duty is actually quite hardcore, as it features RPG elements in multiplayer, like making classes and selecting perks. So it's not like all CoD players won't be interested in Skyrim and we like to hear Bethesda say: "We tend to make our game more for ourselves and other people who play a lot of games."

They're saling pretty close to the wind suggesting that CoD is RPG like. Anymore of that talk, and Bethesda hits the skids in terms of being an RPG developer in my mind.

As someone who has put around 200 hours across 3 COD titles, I somewhat agree with Howard's assessment.

He isn't saying that COD is an RPG, he's stating that it has elements like one.

I've played my share of RPG's since getting into them recently. I've also played all the CoD titles. I have to say I agree with what Howard and what max are saying. They are not saying CoD is an RPG but rather the depth it has in MP for you to create your own soldier sort of speak, relates to that of an RPG. It's all about depth and customization, and being able to cater to the player. In those regards CoD offers that type of depth.

that headline literally made me cringe. i wondered in what crazy way cod would be brought into a skyrim discussion. once i got to the article it wasn't that bad, but i'm a little uncomfortable hearing an rpg developer talking this way. sure there are hardcore cod players, but i think it's somewhat of a streatch to call an arcade like run and gun shooter hardcore. maybe, i'm wrong, though. maxpontiac makes some good points.

Your looking into the headline too much friend. Take a step back take a look at the MP in CoD, look at how deep it is with customization for your character between the weapons, loadouts, perks, there is a lot of customization there and a lot of freedom. That's all that is being said is that, that freedom to create your character is there and is deep and that CoD relates to that. Oblivion was te same way, most RPG's are so in a sense CoD relates to an RPG, they are not relating Skyrim to CoD.

you are probably right. that's why i said maxpontiac raised some good points. i have not spent a lot of time with cod, but i do agree it does offer a lot of customization.

The day that an RPG plays like CoD is the day I freak out haha. I understand why this comparison would upset people, even myself. But just knowing what he meant, as you stated as you read on, it becomes more clear what he's (Howard, in the article) is referring to.

Fair point, but come on... How many alternatives were there to choose from to CoD? Seriously, it seems as though all these PR folk just say anything that'll get them a headline. We know that CoD has RPG-like elements in its multiplayer... Does he really think that we need to know that, or that saying that will increase their chances of drawing in a bit of that market? Gods. It can't just be an RPG, it has to be compared (in an admittedly roundabout way) to a game that is in a completely different genre, simply because it is the highest grossing intellectual property in the world today. BS.

Next you'll hear Michael Bay saying that Transformers is like CoD, but not because they're both dumb, flashy action with no substance.

Well when he's talking about bringing in a new audience he makes a very good point. He's not talking to you or I, he's reaching a broader audience, basically telling people to give other genres a try, that maybe they'll be surprised at some of the similarities that make them what they are.

I'm glad they are streamlining it, if I leave the game for a bit to play a new action title I sometimes have to relearn the controls and menu option (and there are lots of menu options). And I'm having a devil of a time with Two Worlds II because there are 3 things mapped to every button and some confusticating customization.

i like it, I dont love it. I like how theres tons of customization, but the quality of the game is clearly sub par. It's a decent big world fantasy rpg worth about $30.

RPG does not translate to hardcore. That's the point. You can't throw a few RPG elements into a game and call it hardcore. That's dumb. And of course you can't make a full RPG and have it automatically be hardcore either. Dumb logic is dumb.
