Is MGS4 Still One Of The Best Of The Current Generation?
It's always an important question: how well do fantastic games stand up over time?
For the most part, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has produced titles that really do withstand the test of time. Thanks to memorable characters, storylines, and dramatic situations, the MGS games always deliver, and always seem to maintain their appeal over many years. If you ask the fans, they'll say it's frequently great fun to replay older titles, and that includes the "archaic" original.
But gaming just keeps pushing forward at a phenomenal rate, and a lot has happened in the last three years. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves brought interactive entertainment to a new level, and other titles (LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, God of War III, etc.) have continued to push the envelope. It seems like better games keep showing up on a continual basis and by the end of 2011, we'd have to compare MGS4 to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Battlefield 3, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Batman: Arkham City, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and more. So does MGS4 still stand tall in the face of that competition?
Personally, I say it does. Above all else, MGS4 seems like a relatively unique experience, especially with the decline of Japanese-centric games. We won't see its like again until MGS5 shows up...and no, I don't think we can count Metal Gear Solid: Rising, as it's a different sort of MGS. The hardcore fans will back me on that.

Note the avatar change. I'll have to work up a new avatar to include Rorona, and perhaps even a catgirl from one of the sillier Anime series with my original lineup.

But I'm looking to branch out, something that has a good story behind it, I like a bit of comedy ones as well, but it's not high on my list, but it all depends on my mood I guess.

like highlander, i mostly watch harem/comedy/romance type animes because to me they're a lot of fun to watch. story might not play that big of a part but they're just hilarious. some of my favorites are baka to test, the world god only knows(2 seasons), asu no yoichi, love hina, ai yori aoshi(2 seasons), b gata h kei, chobits, to love ru(2 seasons), DearS, denpa onna, ookamisan, dog days, full metal panic, goshuushousama ninomiyakun, hayate no gotoku, infinite stratos, inukami, kore wa zombie desu ka, nyan koi, shuffle!, toaru majutsu no index, toradora, zero no tsukaima(3 seasons). i have a lot more but these are just a few of my favorites. if you want some more just hit my psn with a message. most of my collection play fine on the ps3 and i could probably even tell you where to find them. my psn id is the same here, just let me know you're from psxextreme because i trash empty invites.

I have a theory as to why the Japanese are failing to generate quality titles.
Obviously I pin the blame on every individual that collectively contributed towards their submission, however Microsoft are responsible for a huge chunk, simply because they released their console too early - rushed to the point of 50 - 30% failure rate upon release as well, just to be over a year's head start of the competition. Typical.
The early release combined with the invasion of PC gaming influenced online [FPS being the flagbearer] caused mass confusion within the Japanese gaming industry, of which were noticing how the western audience absorbed the new method of high definition gaming consisting of only one western console for the first year to bring forth a western influence so well. Really not surprising, however I can only presume Japanese publishers were thinking:
"SHIT, GUYZ, THEY GOT ZE MISSILES, WTF EIH?"
This caused 54% of all Japanese devs & publishers to suddenly think fully catering [i.e. immitating] for the western audience would be a smart idea, 43% to whine & start having an apocalyptic mindset/fit about the Great Japanese Gaming Depression [or demise], whilst the other 3% would still try and stick to their tried & tested roots. The latter has been more successful, imo.
And eeiiiwwww, not Crunchyroll... =P.

@ Clamedeus
I see your list is probably overloaded already, but for good light comedy, for now I recommend the following:
- Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
- Hayate No Gotoku!
- !!!1!!!!!?!?!
- Shijou Saikyou No Deshi Kenichi
After watching Bebop make sure you watch Samurai Champloo as well. R.I.P. Nujabes

yes! yes it is the best of the generation. maybe even all time. or at least best game ever on a playstation console.
my personal all time favorite game BTW the fight with liquid at the end when it plays the different music from all snake & liquid battles from previous mgs's is the single greatest moment of gaming i've ever experienced!

From what I've played though I'd say it can definitely stand up to the games that are out today. Sadly MGS5 will probably be coming to 360 and may thus fall short.

The reason I mentioned 360 for MGS5 is because of that new multiplat engine Koji and Co are working on. Fox or something?

I don't believe it is due to the mass ammount of story clips, as I said I enjoy the story and watching them. it's the gameplay itself. I just don't feel like it flows very well from chapter to chapter. I enjoy playing chapter 1 and most of chapter 2, I dont like the Drebin van sqeuence near the end.
Chapter 3 is fun the 1st time but gosh is it awful to replay. It feels very different to how a MGS game should play.
Chapter 4... No complaints what so ever. The best chapter.
Chapter 5, Its the structure once again, you have the normal section at first, then a boss, then you have the crawling section, and then another boss....Actually thinking back i liked all of this as well...
I think I just wanted more sections in the game like chapter one ,where you have more control over snake.
On problem I do have is the bosses, while the battles were fun to play, I did not like the characters at all.You were suddenly thrown into a fight with characters which you just knew nothing about and then Drebin would just flood you with a backstory after you defeated them. it felt like they had no involvement in the plot unlike Olga from MGS2, The Cobra unit from MGS3 were close to the boss so i connected with them more.
Overall though MGS4 is one of the titles which I got a PS3 for and I was not dissapointed, have games gone further now, maybe so. but MGS4 roots are deep within a series which certainly has not been surpassed this generation, many others like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Tekken have gone off the rails this gen, MGS4 keeps the series standing strong. i just hope MGS5 never comes as it is now over.

i agree with just about everything you said...except for the last part. i want a mgs5, and think it's pretty crazy not to want another installment. mgs5 would not have to ruin the ending of mgs4.
i would probably rate mgs4 as the third best entry. i still think the first game was the best. mgs3 would be second.
the only flaws in mgs4 are there isn't a whole lot of game there, and the way it handles installs you really notice it when you replay the game. you can get through the game pretty fast. a couple of more chapters would have helped.

Except, I personally think Act 1 is gaming at it's finest, none of the other chapters reached that balance of stealth, action and story the same way. Plus the newness of the game and how real being in the middle of that war felt is just unparalleled.
And Act 3 was terrible, I've said it a million times, it made MGS4 unplayable a second time. There was NO WAY I was doing those boring stealth segments again. And not even just that, graphically I hated it too. I guess the last part of the act was good though.
And I agree with you about the bosses. I also didn't like how every single one was the same way after you defeated them.

There is no characters left to explore, sure Raiden can have another tragedy, but I think it would be unfair, he deserves his peace now. Another clone... I just dont see the relevence... The MG saga from MGS 3 - MGS4 was all been patched up, there really is nothing left.

The game is absolutely epic in every sense; the music, gameplay, story, acting... hell, the fourth chapter is freakin' Shadow Moses! (sorry if that spoiled anything for anyone)
Besides Mortal Kombat, MGS is the only other gaming series I've ever been obsessed with. Ever since I bought the first MGS on December 27th, 2008 (I remember the date because I was mad I didn't get it for Christmas and I had to buy it immediately afterwards), Snake's been my man.
I mean, I own a GameCube only for The Twin Snakes (and I confess, Animal Crossing)! I own the first MGS four times; the original, Twin Snakes, the trilogy boxed set on the PS2 and the PS3 digital copy.
So to clarify, yes, MGS4 is still THE best this generation. I honestly don't think anything will take its spot besides the eventual MGS5 (or The Last Guardian). Oh, and I completely agree with you, Ben; Rising is not part of the main MGS series. It'll probably be fun but without Kojima on board as director or Snake featured at all, I doubt it'll blow me away.

MGS4 offers such a gripping experience from incredible and diverse game play ranging from MGS sneaking to action to emotional game play (the microwave and Liquid Vs. Snake fight).
It also gives you a choice of how to play. I hate the Drebin Points system so I don't really use it and play it as traditional Metal Gear game, but I love having that option to blast through everything (which I sometimes do), but having that choice is great.
It also offers a fantastic cinematic experience. There are a few plot holes, but overall the experience makes up for that. It is so emotionally powerful and incredibly well conceived and executed from a filmmaking stand point and enhances the game play as well.
Snake is presented in such an amazing way and undergoes such a powerful arc in this game as well.
Nothing is as cinematically well done or involves you emotionally like this except for Heavy Rain, and MGS4 unlike so many games this generation, is throughly consistent with amazing twists and turns. It also has a GREAT ending that brings the whole saga together.
Hideo Kojima puts Hollywood to shame with this game. Very few people these days (except for Scorsese, Nolan, Abrams, Speilberg, Fincher, Inarritu, Cuaron and some others) can even come close to executing with such precision and skill.
Honestly film as a whole is still on a level above gaming in the storytelling department, but people like Kojima, David Cage and Amy Hennig are getting games ever closer to eclipsing it.

MGS4 will remain at the top of best PS3 games this generation. Thus far there has not been a single game, including Uncharted 2, that has such an epic story. Of coarse I think the online for Uncharted was definitely better than MGS4. You can't beat how amazing the campaign really was in MGS4, both in story and game play.
