EA Plans To Shell Out Big Time For Battlefield 3

You gotta spend money to make money.

EA has been pushing Battlefield 3 at every possible turn and everyone is eagerly awaiting the heavyweight fight between DICE's potentially amazing product and Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The sales battle may be a foregone conclusion but that won't stop EA from pushing like crazy.

According to a recent investor update from Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, EA will spend between $45 and $50 million on marketing and advertisement...all for the sake of BF3. Also, don't forget that EA's game gets the drop on MW3 as it launches a few weeks earlier on October 25. Pachter has also said the new CoD could break sales records set by last year's Black Ops, so EA is going to need all the help they can get.

Perhaps this massive marketing budget is part of the reason why the analyst thinks EA could steal away some CoD fans. Either way, it should be interesting.

That is a crap load of money. I'm not sure if its necessary, but I hope it pays off for EA and I'm preparing myself to see Battlefield 3 everywhere I look.

I don't think it's necessary one bit. EA and Dice can spend all they want, but they still won't stop the COD avalanche.

Call of duty 3 multiplayer still is awesome minus the bugs, spawn camping, etc. I wish today's COD games played like 3's multiplayer with the same game mechanics but I'm not going to complain about MW1 the best COD to date. W@W is good except the hacked matches and along with some other problems.

From what i've seen, BF3 deserves to sell tons more than MW3, so hopefully their ads help them get the revenue/sales they have earned.

I thought World at War and Black Ops "seemed" amazing. Boy was I wrong.

Let's just wait for the final product to come out before we decide who should sell more than the other.

MW3 will do what all COD's have done before it, and that's break sales records.

For the record, I don't think Modern Warfare 3 will break sale records. It's hard to top Black Ops, especially since that game on its' own broke all kinds of huge records.

Well partly for the new game engine but mostly for a potentially pretty good war game that has more to offer than the competition. If war games are not your cup of tea that's another story I guess XD

I think BF3 will sell pretty good, but it won't hit MW3 numbers not by a long shot. I run a local game store we are promoting MW3 like crazy not BF3. The pre-orders are showing it too. It's about a 5:1 ratio and most of the BF3 pre-orders are for PC. The hardcore gamers are going to purchase BF3. The casual gamers buy MW3. The casual gamers are what's going to help MW3 sell 20 million+. Also, we all know that the critics won't even play MW3 and give it a 9/10 and completely dissect BF3and it will get a 8.5/10 for PC and 7/10 for consoles.

It's opposite for me. Im getting alot of reservations for BF3. While alot of nothing for MW3. It might be because the local gaming guild hates CoD.

It is not about how much quality a game has, but how much it can be advertised? That's truly sad. By the way, I am referring to COD. I am sure that BF3 will deliver in terms of quality; but it is very distressing that EA has to sink to Activision's standards to pull gamers from that meager franchise.

To be honest, CoD needs no advertising. Activision can make a trailer with only the words: Call of Duty, and it will still sell like pancakes. It might be the reason EA is gona spend that much for advertising, to change the minds of the CoD boys.

What ever happened to Ghost Recon. If only EA and Activision played it like Ubisoft took time to make a decent game. I don't really know what i'm talking about there but I do know and am glad that there wasn't a new RB6 every 8 months or so. But I guess thats what happens when you let stockholders make games.

of course EA are going to be shelling out big time, you dont go up against the biggest game out there with your 6yos piggy bank!
i just hope this does not come back and bite EA on the a$$!
there betting the farm and then some, i just hope it does not go pear shaped.
otherwise our chances of ever seeing DICE finally give us ME2 will really be down the gutter!

I have to assume that they've also put that amount into the game itself, and aren't simply hoping to sell it on empty promises. I know that advertising is important, and a LOT of people will but into it, but this is just a tad obscene. Ah well, if it helps it helps, and if the game is good, it'll help even more.

So I gather we finally have a verdict on Move support for BF3, and it's a negative? Won't be buying any of them.

It would be like taking away steering wheel support for GT5 and forcing me to use a keyboard. If I have to play Killzone 3 forever more to avoid the sticks then that's what I'll do.

Well it makes sense why they would want to spend so much on advertising. Modern Warfare 3 is no joke of an opponent, and I would say Modern Warfare 3 has the edge with the attention of many casual gamers. If Battlefield 3 wants to outsell the competition, they need to advertise as much as possible.

The downside to these news is that there's going to be a s--tload of ads in my face over and over again, which I am not looking forward to.

"you have to spend money to make money." please send that to sony's advertising deptartment. it is almost obscene the amount of 360 ads i have seen vs ps3. it's not just tv ads either. my local video store(family video) has a big neon xbox 360 sign in their window.

This is what is needed, other Shooter fans need to realize there are other games out there. Besides the same game every year pretty much.

Obviously I'm extremely hyped about BF3 but no one else was impressed by any of the footage shown so far from BF3? I mean, the PS3 footage looks great I thought, and of course the PC footage looks incredible.

Yes MW3 will sell, because people appreciate mediocrity but I have been reading many hands-on impressions of how some Journalists have realized that CoD really isn't going anywhere, its run, shoot, pick up, use the same weapons from 2 years ago, and just continue to do so.

This is what i said earlier this year. I knew they were ready to contend this year!!! Probably won't beat MW3 but it's good to see that they are going to give a valiant effort. They should by all means!!! Their product was amazing last year and i'm sure it'll be even better this year. Can't wait.
