Sony Clarifies HDMI Issue For New PlayStation 3 Models

It's always good to have clarification, and it's important to note that Sony didn't seem to have any choice in the matter.

We've all heard about the new "K chassis" PlayStation 3 models, which apparently affected high-definition content. It seemed that an HDMI cable would be required for viewing high-def movies and games; component cables would no longer cut the mustard. But Sony has since clarified the issue:

"The new CECH-3000 series PS3 requires HDMI only for BD movie output in HD, in compliance with AACS standards. PS3 continues to support component output for HD gaming and streaming content."

They're referring to the Advanced Access Content System that is a standard for DRM, and states that HD video resolutions are limited to HDMI and DVI cables. As of 2014, Blu-Ray players won't have any component ports at all; it appears the initial report based on a GameStop document was inaccurate. Even so, this news could affect those with older HDTVs or those who don't have enough HDMI ports for all their devices.

As did anyone with an ounce of common sense, but since it's Sony, the wolves came out as usual.

Sony should also wait until 2014 to release that PS3.

Future Shop sells some ok Icon switches for 29.99 can. 3 inputs and a switcher remote. Those who only have 1 hdmi port are not that limited. Just adding yet another remote lol

But with all that incentive to get people to buy new HDTVs with hdmi ports on them they should have a *We trade your old tv for a discount on a new one!* program.

With the PS3 most likely being used as a blu-ray player as well as an HD console, wouldn't most people want to use the HDMI port anyway? Of course, not every TV being used has an HDMI port, but that slowly is becoming a non-issue anyway, right?

Well, if this is the case, then I have to retract what I said a few articles before. It could be Sony is aligning themselves fulfill this regulation rather than simply taking away hardware to lower cost.

It all makes sense now...

It makes sense, but you can bet that if there is a way to eliminate cost and they see no one using the feature, component video could disappear if a business case could be made.

If there is one thing I know about Sony regarding the PS3, they are extremely focused on costs.
