Final Fantasy XIII-2 Slated For January 2012 Release In US

January 2011 saw the release of Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3. January 2012 will get another gigantic RPG release.

Well, if you can call it role-playing. While we still haven't seen a great deal of official details and media concerning Final Fantasy XIII-2, it seems Square Enix has already nailed down a launch window for North America. As seen at Emily Shoji's Twitter page:

"FINAL FANTASY XIII-2 is slated for a January 2012 release for North America. Be excited!"

Okay, we're excited. Sort of. In the past, any mention of a Final Fantasy title would've had us drooling, and while FFXIII was a great game, the RPG fans had a little bone to pick with the developers. Now, these same developers say they've listened to their fans when creating FFXIII-2 but...well, we've already explained why we remain skeptical.

But for the sake of enduring optimism, we'll just hope for something amazing. All hope hasn't died.

Yeah really. This is the game we want to see more of. I am a die hard FF fan, and will prolly get 13-2 either day one or soon after....but hopefully it is different enough from 13...but as Ben said...skeptical is a good way of putting it.

dmiitrie, we can be certain that FFXIII-2 will also be a great game, but remain skeptical that it will return to using the elements that we all know and love.

I myself will probably pick up the game not long after it's released. I have fond memories of the Final Fantasy franchise. And that sentiment has not faded away in spite of my disgust for Yoichi Wada.

Still, I too would like more Versus info. Although I believe I did hear last week that more Versus info would be incoming sometime this week. And I do not believe this incoming info involves the project going multi-platform seeing as how the info was dropped by Tetsuya Nomura.

i share your sentiments about the final fantasy series, and mr wada. i think square going multiplatform is a factor in some of bad feeling towards square this gen. is one off ff game enough to bail on the entire series? it isn't for me.

i'm sorry but no other rpg maker can match square's production values in my opinion so i will be there day 1. i am encouraged about what i have heard about ff13-2, but i understand if people are skeptical. it will have towns, shops, and traditional npcs players can interact with. it will also be far less linear, and have exploration elements. at least that's what i drew from the e3 footage. i have also heard the battle system will be deeper and allow for more customization. oh yeah, players can equip armor, too.

sounds good to me but i understand if others feel differently.

Honestly, I am not too interested in this. I really didn't like the "spam x, kill the monster" take on combat and since this is more of the same just "enhanced" I will be taking a bargain bin approach to this game. Love FF of old, just not too enthusiastic with the new FF.

I'm just don't care anymore. I did not like XIII, also did not bother finishing, so I just don't see anything or expect anything good out of XIII-2. I'll be excited if they do an HD collection of X & XII but besides that oh well.

Mass Effect 3: The most in-depth TPS ever.
FFXIII-2: The least in-depth RPG ever.
(not mine, I don't rightly remember where I originally saw it)

That's cool though, I'll probably wait a while for this one though. Be too hard to get over the end of this year to think about buying anything other than Bioshock Infinite that early in the year.

I have the feeling they're listening to the fans but certainly not their old ones. I believe they're listening to their "new" fanbase. I was turned off by 13. I bought FF13 within the first week of it's release and played it for 3 hours and it's never seen my PS3 ever since.

I don't like the new direction, but I'm learning to accept it and yeah I'll be getting XIII-2. But it's well over a year away so no I can't get excited about it.

Woah, I just realized Final Fantasy doesn't excite me anymore. It's the end of an era.

As I said before, it is difficult to give up to something you love, in this case Final Fantasy franchise. But I'm telling you, if this one is not better than XIII, this love could be in great danger. And just to be clear, I liked very much XIII, but I know it could've been much better for reasons we all know.

With FFXIII's poor sales numbers I fully expect XIII-2 to be a huge failure this time around. There is no way the same amount of gamers who bought FFXIII in its first week of release will be out again for part 2. No way. The creative talent at SE has either run dry or is gone altogether and you know what? The fans know it. We may be fans, but we're not stupid. $60 is $60 and SE can shove it for all I care.

Well I for one am excited about this, I thought XIII was a good RPG, better than any other one I have played this generation (Though Lost Odyssey comes close.)

I can understands everyones reaction to this though, XII was my big FF disapointment and when they make a sequel on the DS i could not care less.

I found XIII refreshing, the 110 hours I spent playing it was a thrill from start to finish. The story was constantly progressive, The characters were charismatic. The gameplay while different was fast and action packed,I really had only 1 or 2 issues with XIII and regard it still as one of the best PS3 experiences I have had so far.

At least they're putting effort into it unlike other DLC. They're creating a full games worth of content worthy of retail price.

This is not just another DLC con, if anything S-E are really the only company with has yet to jump on the DLC band wagon.

there just milking it to make as much off it as they can.
enough whoring FF out, its time we got a true next gen KH game!
enough of these crappy PSP spin offs, its time for a sequel to the game that made $E who they are.

I would ratehr buy a full new game than little DLC packs, you cant say S-E are being lazy, sure some of the concepts for DLC will be in part 2, but they are working their ass off to make a solid title, I for one look forward to it.

KH is a joke nowadays, I lost interested when they decided to make spin off on the DS, which had crucial elements to the story as a whole, so i refuse to play any more KH games, as i am not getting the full story.
