Jaffe Talks Twisted Metal's "M" Rating And Beta Phases

David Jaffe has always put the "twisted" in Twisted Metal.

In speaking about his highly anticipated title at this year's Comic-Con, Eat Sleep Play co-founder Jaffe first confirmed there would be a private and semi-private beta test. He says such a game "doesn't require that large of a testing phase," and the best results will come from a private testing sample.

Then he said they don't currently plan on releasing a Collector's Edition, and he thinks little extra goodies "isn't what the release should be about." We have to agree with that; just give us the game! They also debuted the intro live-action video for the game, which is just downright brutal; Jaffe said the team opted to "embrace the 'M' rating." At first, Eat Sleep Play was going for the T-Teen rating but the bottom line is, Twisted Metal needs to be ultra-twisted.

All we know is that we desperately want to play this game.

I'll definitely be picking this one up eventually, probably sometime early next year since I can't think of anything I'm looking forward to after Skyrim and a few other games like Disgaea 4.

Used to play TM2 to death!

I whole heartedly agree. Twisted metal would just b lightly twisted if it were T. Now that I know its M, this is a d1p for sure. But now I fort choose between this or R3 to buy first.

I cannot wait. I am a Playstation fan because of this franchise. Glad it's going M as I wasn't sure Jaffe would be able to get across his stories without going there to their fullest extent.

Also, Twisted Metal needs to be insane, fun and brutal. You can't be brutal without an M. Sounds like the gameplay is also going to be more brutal with sniper head shots causing like people head's to be blown open which sounds great.

Glad he didn't do the collector's edition. They normally have these cheap things I don't care about. But if he had included say a soundtrack, ST action figure, and TM: Black HD, I would have jumped at that in a heart beat.

There is a "T" in Bru(t)al... an "M" however.... makes you think.

Hey guys I'm sorry I'm going off topic, but i need help, I tried searching for answers but to no answer. I deactivate my account every time I turn off my PS3, because it's my second, 1rst YLODed, an i was afraid this one, not slim 80GB, would die on me, so yesterday after I stopped playing I deactivated as usual, but when I tried to activated this morning it told me an error occurred(80029780) I was wondering what to do! Any help would be most welcome! Oh And I had just finished Borderlands with a friend after just buying it on Tuesday, four nights playing and i can't play it agian because of this, i was going to start the DLC! :(

Go to US dot playstation dot com an you can search what different error codes mean. Another thing is those forums are good for these types of answers quick responses too. Doesn't hurt to call Sony either tomorrow is Monday. Good luck, doesn't sounds like a big issue.

bigrailer19 thet was very helpful, basically I have to wait a week before I can activate it again, so no Borderlands for me for a week, now I'm a sad, very sad panda.

Well at least it's nothing big, but no borderlands for a week? That's rough... I know first hand how addicting that game is. I just finished the zombie DLC, that was pretty fun.

Long time twisted metal fan, and am very, very excited about this game! Everytime I hear from Jaffe, and about this game, I realize it's one of my most anticipate games this generation.

I love Twisted Metal. I love it so much that I beat TM3 with each character just to see the endings, and that game was rough. Anyways, Twisted Metal is looking super promising. It's a definite day one for me.

TM was one of the big hitters for Sony on PSX back in the day. My first loves were Toshindin and Ridge Racer. Then, I think TM hit the scene shortly after. My bro and I had a blast in multi-play with it. RE was a breakthrough title. We got that one when PSX games were sold in cardboard boxes. Warhawk was somewhere in there as an early hit, too. And of course the Tekkens and WipEout. WipEout XL was the first game I remember that strained my eyes for not blinking enough. Then of course, the FF games came pouring in and Square exerted their RPG dominance then. Hehe oh, FF7 really delivered the upsetting blow to Nintendo loyalists. Especially after having come off the heals of delivering FF3 and Chrono Trigger. Nintendo fans were even pepped up on a synthetic N64-FF tech demo. Ha, and the series never saw the light of day for them on the 64. Man, thinking back to that era brings back some real nostalgia.

I had more to say other than my trip down memory lane. I think it'd be pretty cool if they had Kratos as a guest unlock. Like Kratos on a horse or something. He could use his chains as a melee and his Apollo bow for projectiles. His special could be either a Helios light flash or Medusa/Gorgon flash that freezes other vehicles. Yeah, I know. I ask too much. But it's Jaffe! GoW creator. Got to pay tribute.

This shall be mine. I'm glad to hear that he's focussing on the game itself, rather than trying to talk it up and buy his way into people's homes and hearts, but that's always been Jaffe's style. Anyway, TM is sounding beastly, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

how can you have a fast paced highly descruction based online devoted racer without wider beta testing?
come on, please dont let this be a repeat of R2 and the killzone games!
so much fun online, but f*cked if i can get into a game, let alone stay there because of all the god dam lag!
now i know why most MMOs are PC exclusive!

Nobody said this was online-based. Just because it has an online mode doesn't mean the entire world will ignore the single-player.

In fact, most Twisted Metal fans will care almost exclusively about the single-player.

you lag a lot because you need a better modem and internet connection its not the games fault....until you upgrade all you can do is blame yourself. and i also agree with Ben, a lot of people will either play single player or get people together and have LAN parties

____________, you do need to really get a better internet connection. I can play R2 and KZ with little to no lag and I use a mobile hotspot thing.

And note that R2 and Killzone do have servers.

yes yes its my routers fault thats why i have no problems playing games on steam or XBLA.
of course its a online focused game, wheres the fun playing this by yourself?
plus the AI will probably suck, and if you play online you can have a sniper in your car.
the campaign is just a filler, online is where most of the time will be spent.
to not have a beta for such a fast paced game like this is just asking for trouble!

Nice, I thought I read at the beginning of the year they were throwing around a notion of having it rated "T" and that kinda scared me. my lady and I can't wait for TM to come out. Its one of the reasons I bought a second PS3, so we could both play on-line together

Batman and Twisted Metal are my most anticipated titles coming this year, so I would love to be a part of a T.M. beta.

Plus, I wouldn't mind giving a few extra dollars for a model of Sweet Tooth's ice cream truck.

YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! The setting, back stories, tone and characters in Twisted Metal Black were brilliant and I was disappointed when he announced the new TM with a Teen rating. It needs to stay dark, it goes perfect with the game.

I've never played a Twisted Metal game, but from what I've seen it looks like it could be fun, so it's on my wait-n-see list for now.

I do like they've taken the risk with an M rating though...
