Fall Lineup Makes A Gamer's Wallet Cringe...Again
While most publishers and analysts will say there's room for a great many blockbuster titles during the holiday rush, gamers everywhere look at yet another massive fall lineup with trepidation.
It never fails. As each year passes, more and more giant titles loom large during the fourth quarter. We've gotten used to seeing a new Call of Duty in the fall but this year, EA's Battlefield joins the fray. And that's just the start. Here's a sampling of games that release in October and November:
- Twisted Metal
- Batman: Arkham City
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Assassin's Creed: Revelations
- Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- Battlefield 3
- Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
- Rage
- Dark Souls
- Silent Hill: Downpour
- Saints Row: The Third
- Need for Speed: The Run
And that's hardly the entire list. In a two-month span of time, gamers are gonna want a lot of titles; maybe more than a dozen. Remember a time when things were spread out a little more? Summer has always been a little down, but I honestly can't think of anything besides Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Catherine in July and August that draws my attention.
Furthermore, because so many games escape out of the holiday season, more big releases end up in January and February, which doesn't make things much easier. Not all gamers drop their controllers forever during the summer months; could we not pile so many of the biggest games of the year into a two-month span? Really, our wallets would appreciate it.

Luckily I have found ways to supplement my gaming hobby. Otherwise it would be Waiting for pricedrops or rentals.

Dark Souls over TM (sorry was never a TM, vehicular combat Guy. Enjoyed the stories though)
Batman: Arkham City
and of course Uncharted 3
I don't really care for much anything else in that list besides AC, which I'll wait for the price to fall like i did with 2 and Brotherhood, and probably Battlefield 3.
plus I will also get Madden and Nba2k12 for my brother.

I still have original Batman and Demon's Souls games to play before I can think about their sequels. I have a shimmer of hope for Ace Combat. The last one I played was AC4 on PS2. Twisted Metal is hopeful, though, I'm not certain if it'll be more than a rental to me. Ultimately, I feel it's a competitive multi-player game and Tekken already takes that slot. It'd be cool to see all it's vibe and uniqueness though.

Sony alone released at least one AAA title every month in the first half of this year. In total, there were maybe 17 or 18 AAA titles available on PS3 released so far in 2011, including at least 5 legitimate GOTY contenders.
How many years in the past have boasted such a first-half line-up? Last year...that's about it.
And, besides MGS 4, how many AAA titles have released during the summer?
edit: This may double-post. I'll try to delete the extras if that happens.

And furthermore, up until a few years ago, the "other" summer in this industry was the first quarter. All the games were out, people had spent all their money, etc.
Now, with SO many games trying to come out for the holidays, really big-name titles that would normally release then escape into January/February, which makes things even crazier.

Thankfully the only thing I'll be worried about getting right away is Dead Island and possibly the Resident Evil HD games (which are coming in at $20 a piece my friends).
I'll be as busy as a set of blue goat lips at a crabshack so Skyrim and Uncharted 3 might have to wait till xmas. I'm cited for the new Silent Hill but I'll wait for scores first, it better not fail.

I know it might seem a BIT crazy, but I think i'm looking forward to Saints Row more than any other game on the list and I LOVE the Uncharted series.

I already have Gears 3, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Batman Arkham City, ICO/SotC HD and MGS Collection on preorder and mostly paid off. Deus Ex, Twisted Metal, Assassin's Creed Revelations and Battlefield 3 I'm gonna wait for a big ol' price drop. Skyrim I'm gonna wait for the DLC to come out then get the GOTY Edition of Skyrim discounted well into next year.
As for early 2012, I've got Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite in my sights. SSX could be great, but am gonna wait for Ben's review on that one.
I have no interest in NFS The Run or Modern Warfare 3. Saints Row The Third, Silent Hill Downpour, RAGE and Dark Souls I might check out during next year's big mid-year drought.
My wallet is doing pretty well so far during this drought. I just hope my savings won't deplete too fast with Sept, Oct and Nov fast approaching. God, I can't wait for Uncharted 3 and Gears 3!!! AND the MGS and ICO Collection!!! Mass Effect 3 and Bioshock Infinite can't come soon enough!!!
As for the rest of you struggling to decide which games are worth getting Day 1, good luck! I've made my decisions, I hope you can make yours. :)

Batman and Ace Combat are the other games I'm most interested in, but Ace Combat seems to have changed a lot from what I've seen in videos. I'm not sure I'll like what they've done that makes it look like a different franchise to me.

Why can't we see more big titles in the summer!???
It will help out the consumers and the developers because there's almost for sure going to be more sales.

Uncharted 3
Dark Souls

Silent Hill
Batman
I want to have Silent Hill higher on my list, but I'm skeptical about the execution. I've really been wanting to play an old school-style survival horror game lately. I even went so far as to get the original Clock Tower on my phone for nostalgia. Does anyone think Downpour will actually deliver? I'm hoping, but not so sure yet...

septembers normally got maybe 3 or 4, its normally october and november that are the fullest.
this year though its quite the opposite, partly thanks to all the HD remakes releasing.
i mean did i miss the meeting or something?
when did the law pass saying HD collections are only allowed to release in september?

It's funny, most of my purchases this Fall will be HD remakes. Seriously, God of War Origins HD, Resident Evil 4 HD, plus Team Ico HD collection and maaaaybe Splinter Cell HD (that or I'll grab it eventually) are the only games I'm grabbing in September so far. Then Oddworld HD and Metal Gear Solid HD soon after.
But yeah. This Fall is making my wallet hurt. Badly. Thank God I paid for most of the games I listed already. Ugh, my social life is screwed. haha

Make the most of your time young uns...;-)
Uncharted 3 is the only one I'll probably get day one! That will last me a month! Hopefully pick a few up later when they are cheaper.
One good thing about a packed Sep-Nov is that it leaves a lot of excellent games available for the rest of the year at a cheaper price.
