RPG Battle: Dark Souls vs. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Forget all this Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 vs. Battlefield 3 talk. For role-playing fans, the battle might be between Dark Souls and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Thankfully, fans of the genre should have time for both, as the follow-up to the award-winning Demon's Souls will release on October 4, and Skyrim won't be ready until November 11. Of course, given the amount of time people may spend with Dark Souls, maybe there isn't enough time...

So what will the hardcore role-playing fans choose? These are very different experiences, although both will likely offer 100+ hours of gameplay for those who want it. Dark Souls will tax your combat and strategy abilities to the limit; it's a real-time, third-person adventure that builds upon the success of Demon's Souls. On the other hand, Skyrim features a gigantic open world (Dark Souls isn't quite as open) and a first-person viewpoint. The style is different, and so is the progression.

There's little doubt that Skyrim will be the most popular, but that's hardly the intriguing question. MW3 is destined to trump BF3 on the sales charts, but that's not what gets headlines; it's a quality vs. quality battle. In that case, which of these RPGs will emerge victorious according to reviews? We'll let the RPG fans weigh in with their picks.

Being a big fan of Demon's Souls, I'm not exactly sure I would group it's successor with other RPG's just because the gap between RPG and Action games can become blurred these days..

These days many action games have the same elements that RPG's have. I think a good example is Skill distribution, character growth, and an epic storyline - Each God of War game did a great job of that.. As did Darksiders, Demon's Souls and other games. Heck, you collect souls in Demon's Souls and distribute them to your skills much like you would in action games. Is inventory management the biggest difference between an Action game and an RPG game - Sometimes it seems that way to me.

Anyways, I think Dark Souls will be a better RPG than Skyrim just because I have owned 4 elder scrolls games and while they are fantastic and epic games, the enhancements between the games are minimal. There wasnt *that* many differences between Morrowind and Oblivion, for example. Of course, i'm merely speculating and I am interested to hear other peoples feedback and why.

One thing is for certain and that is that both games should present a very good value for gamers. Both games should be loaded with replayability.

Yeah well there won't be that many differences between the gameplay of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls either. So what? We expect a certain similarity in each installment of our favorite franchise. It's what makes it our favorite.

I can't speak too much for Dark Souls as of yet, I've played a level of Demon's Souls. I liked it. But as of right now, my money is one Skyrim. I love what Bethseda does with their stuff and I'm eager for more.

I was able play Demon's Souls and I liked it. I'm just not too sure what will change and what will remain the same in Dark Souls for me to give it my vote. For the time being I will put my money on Skyrim based on Bethesda's track record with the past Elder Scrolls titles, but I'll reserve my judgement till I can play both.

My vote is for skyrim aswell.

Have you seen the graphics of both the video AND the gameplay? its effing stupendous. I'm not knocking on dark souls though, I'm sure it'll look fantastic too, but it just seems like to me that the fine folks at bethesda invested a lot of time in just how things look.

But my opinion could be veiwed as biased, as I own tec4 and demons souls, but havnt played much demons souls. Its on my list, but I've been imursed in wkc, so really thhats the only game that's been gettin play from me.

But yeah, skyrim.

One thing you said is absolutely true. They are very different experiences. As such, best rpg will go to Skyrim, but the winners are gamers.

I'm coming to the end of Claymore, very good series if you can get past the annoying amount of "narration" in battles. You know where they explain their moves to each other and stuff, I hate that, but otherwise recommend.

Cowboy Bebop is a fantastic anime. It's one that I watched while younger, then revisited here recently. Though I love Cowboy Bebop, I do not love all Anime. Bleach is just too time consuming. I love an a beginning, a middle, and an end to my shows thank you!

@World: Claymore is great, and you were right about the narration, but have you noticed the UNGODLY amount of crying? Good god, I've never seen so many eye droppings in my life.

@Geobaldi: How do you like High School Of the Dead? I thought about purchasing that but I'm on the fence.

It was awesome in my opinion. Any zombie fan should enjoy it as it brings to mind the classics of old. You can watch it on the Hulu website to see what you think. One episode was enough for me to purchase it. The manga's, it's based on, are pretty good as well.

Im sure Ill love Skyrim but Im going with Dark Souls. Especially if co-op is anything like Demons Souls. One of the best online experiences this gen. They just need to make sure it supports a headset this time though.

Oh and btw for anyone who got frustrated with Demons Souls difficulty, co-op was your missing link.

Here is room in my heart for both Seriously though, if you held a gun to my head and forced me to pick, I'd say that Dark Souls might be my favorite due to the intensity and worrying about three BP's invading my game. Although, I can see myself getting happily lost in Skyrim hunting the wildlife, finishing every quest and becoming the baddest kick ass dragon borne this side of Tamriel.

Demon Souls and it's successor are more of an acquired taste. It gets much easier as you play it and become familiar with the world and how things work. DS is my all-time favorite game. Oblivion is second, not by much. But I understand your lack of enthusium for it. If RPG's are not for everyone, DS is an even further subset of that.

Am I the only one here that would prefer Dark Souls over Skyrim? I never played the predecessors to Skyrim, so I don't know what the appeal is. It looks really nice but...I don't know.

Yeah, I didn't see a lot of bugs probably because I haven't payed attention to things but, I heard from someone that when you try to cure Vampirism in Oblivion that she wouldn't accept the blood grass (I think that's what it's called) And you would basically be screwed and become a vampire.

But my friend told me there is another way to cure it, you have to find a scroll that cures all diseases including Vampirism I don't remember where he said it is though.

I think both will be great for there own reasons. But Im going with Skyrim for the very reason that it's because of Oblivion that I'm as big of an RPG fan as I am. Simple is that!

Skyrim will be better. With its massive world, better graphics, more than likely better story, deeper combat mechanics and leveling system, and a LOT more quests, there's little doubt that ESV will be better. I am getting both though, because in no way am I saying DS will be a bad game.

Im buying BOTH on day 1 but as for this vs battle Dark souls all the way. Badass bosses and a badass co-op/competitive and innovative multiplayer its a no brainer. The sense of fear i get when i play alone and i get invaded by a online player for the first time is price-less. Theres that level of tension that arises when i see those red letters pop up on my screen lol.

Its unique. Players can join your game to help (blue phantoms) They get souls for doing it but it doesnt count for them when you beat a boss. Players can also invade your game (black phantoms) and take your souls when they defeat you. Souls are the currency and the way to level. There has always been a community that sets up duels between players while the others watch. Even tournaments. There is nothing as intense and thrilling when having someone invade your game and the hunt begins. The black phantom will use the enemy npcs as cover as they are on their side.

Third Person View in Oblivion felt weird, but I loved being in Third Person View though. It just needed more ironing out. I didn't like that if you looked at a door you couldn't see if the door symbol was red or not, or needed to be pick locked.

I played Oblivion almost completely in third-person, especially the combat (except for the archery). It looked a little wonky, but first-person melee is even worse than first-person shooting, though not as bad as first-person platforming.

I just use it to check out my armor and get up. Apparently Skyrim is molding the legs and greaves together to create more memory for other things. I'm not one for mismatched armor pieces anyway. I'd rather have one uniform set. But 3pv to check it out all the way.

I'm surprised there isn't more talk about how From Soft scared everyone by saying there would be no Demon's Souls 2 because they always planned to change the name just to take it multiplat.

I predict 3 to 1 sales in favor of PS3.

i think the 2 games are so different that they really don't compete with each other directly. i imagine skyrim will be a lot more popular. whenever there is an article up on cvg or the sixth axis regarding dark souls i notice it will only generate a handful of comments while skyrim generates a lot more interest. i also have noticed resistance 3 and twisted metal articles do not get a lot of comments either.

crossing my fingers that skyrim will be a stable ps3 game and bethesda puts a lot of of effort into debugging and testing the game. all the footage that came from e3 was of the 360 version. i always get a little nervous when a multiplat developer only showcases 1 version of the game.

I just wanna know one thing, it may seem nit picky, but will Skyrim have real snow and rain? It f*cked up my immersion when I realized the snow and rain in Oblivionwere just the same cheap effect in front my player as I moved. Gotta get that stuff for real. I love the imagery and vistas in that game but you can't have cheap stuff overlaying it.

Demon's Souls was 2009s GOTY in my opinion, but I think Skyrim is going to beat Dark Souls in the reviews. I just don't think there is going to be enough of an upgrade to really WOW people like Skyrim will.

id pick skyrim.
i mean look at the last games they have made, both fallouts and the last elder scrolls game.
all were repetitive, boring and worse buggy so badly they made mercenaries 2 look like GOTC!
but did that stop them from getting fantastic reviews, and eventual GOTY editions?

My opinion doesn't matter, being one of the few who have yet to play Demon's Souls. One thing I do know is that I just don't have the patience I used to with video games. I don't take dying over and over and over again with no progress very well, so I think that has turned me off somewhat to Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls as well. I know Skyrim is a day one for me for sure though.

Yeah it's Dark Souls for me. I'm sorry it just looks like the buffed-up, greasy, wiser father of the two you know? Visually no doubt it's better looking. Game wise also. I just remember the feeling in Demon's Souls when you get a hit. It's the sound and the feel when you get it right. Skyrim, I mean, 1st person view? Just an opinion preference.

Dark Souls is the only game I care about this year and there are a lot of games I really should care about this year. I'm broke and all my games I've bought recently have been either used or I waited for a price drop. This is a hard decision.....however I have to side with Dark Souls as I have it preordered already. DS was so fantastic and had such a wonderful challenging mechanic that I thirst for more! Honestly, Skyrim will be like Oblivion, Dragon Age and all the other fantastic rpgs. Don't get me wrong as I am not ripping Skyrim apart. I just feel Dark Souls will be more unique. Time is getting short! I will be buying Dark Souls first and after I finish it, I will buy Skyrim.

Since I am working on Two Worlds II right now, and still yet finished with Final Fantasy XIII...(i know, i know), I'm gonna save up for Skyrim. Only because I've never played Demon's Souls and new RPGs are "Iffy" if you're strapped for cash. I may rent Demon's Souls sometime to see if it's worthy of adding to the game shelf. If it's animated in any way whatsoever I will not even consider it. By animated, I mean cartoon-like graphics; (Dragon Quest, Catherine, etc.) I can't handle spending money on games unworthy of looking real or life-like. Oblivion had a mixture of both, but not enough animation to make it unpleasant. Hopefully both titles will be outstanding.
