Square Enix Resurrects True Crime: Hong Kong

We dislike stories about games being canceled. But man, we love it when a game rises from the dead, mostly because it's so very rare.

For a while now, True Crime: Hong Kong has been on the shelf, which disappointed fans of the series. However, according to a Gamasutra report, the rights to this promising open-world action title have been picked up by Square Enix. Better still, the game is already back in development at United Front Games. However, it should be clarified that Square Enix only has access to this particular title; it didn't purchase the entire True Crime franchise. Hence, the publisher will re-brand the game before it launches.

When former publisher Activision Blizzard ditched the project, the publisher's CEO Eric Hirshberg said the game "just wasn't going to be good enough." We're hoping United Front Games can deliver a top-tier action title; the franchise's grit and atmosphere is typically a huge draw. Amp that stuff up, devs!

Out of all the game cancelations there have ever been, True Crime: Hong Kong was one of the biggest ones that angered me. So, thank you Square Enix. I wish they would pick up Split/Second 2 as well.

Yes, Yes, Yes.... I will finally get my hands on this after all and put right back on my list of most anticipated games...

"CEO Eric Hirshberg said the game "just wasn't going to be good enough."

Who's this guy kidding that's just a cover up for them wanting to put out more COD games.

I loved True Crime Streets Of LA, it would be cool if they made a sequel to that one.

Well that's good, I know SE is trying desperately to put out action titles so this should suit them. Never even played the series, whats it like?

But I'm confused about why it was really dropped by Activision, they haven't ever had problems putting out games that clearly "weren't good enough" before.

Lol that's very true. Well the game won't actually be called True Crime because SE didn't gain rights to the IP

I guess they want to stick with a franchise that's selling the most copies.

No, but same publisher now and that's good enough for me to bring up that True Crime is a worthless franchise and JC2 is some of the most fun I've ever had in gaming....even if Ben failed to find the same magic.

^...ya and those that enjoy this game are wrong."

REALLY??? Just because you didn't like the games doesn't make the entire franchise worthless, especially seeing how the franchise does have a strong enough fanbase... You do realize that what you said was your own personal OPINION, yet you say it as if it is a fact all because YOU didn't like them. What exactly makes you right and us wrong?????

It doesn't matter if it the same publisher because the publishers aren't the ones making it they're just putting up the money for it. It being made by an entirely different studio all together, and different studio have a different visions...

For example how many developers made Batman games before Rocksteady got they're shot at making a Batman game, which now considered the golden standard for superhero games.

Have you even watched any of the previews for the game before it got cancelled it looked great.... Probably Not!!!

And then watch as Activision sue Square Enix when the game sells over 2 million copies.

Anyone here remember the whole Brutal Legend fiasco?

Oh, this is fantastic news. I really, really enjoy this. True Crime was looking to be one of my purchases this year, and it looks like now it's an early lock for next year. I hope UFG can pull it off, but I have faith in them.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bout time we had something good to say about $E!

eh....... we may slate them for the way they have turned their backs on their fans and their herratage.
but one things for sure, they know a good game when they see one!
well thats besides there staple of course........
now all i need is 8 days and the getaway 3 to be brought back and ill be set!
please $E, buy them back!
pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaase!!!!!!!!!
$ony are too busy turning their famous series into crappy kids games to bring there most popular series back!
i mean come on the getaway is the ONLY title in history to ever run with GTA!
if that does not deserve constant sequels and love and attention, then nothing does!
if M$ did what sony have done to halo they would of been gutted and strung by there own entrails years ago!

Its not in Activision's hands, which is even more of a reason to buy it. Lets make it outsell Modern Warfare 3.

That more than likely won't happen but if it sell a couple of million of units like 2-3 maybe even 4 million unit would be a slap in the face to Activision, cuz they cancelled because they thought it wouldn't be good enough to sell. It would send a clear message to them that next time maybe they will be more willing to take that risk next game that isn't COD.
