id Software: Rage A Cure For "Modern Combat Fatigue"
These days, the biggest games in the world are often shooters. And in fact, they're often military-style, modern-day combat shooters.
So id Software creative director Tim Willits uses this trend to help promote his team's new project, Rage. In fact, he told VideoGamer that he'd be "shocked" if hardcore id followers didn't take to Rage. It's not only because the game is the first since the team produced DOOM III in 2004; it's also because the avid gamer is suffering from "modern combat fatigue."
"But I would be shocked if a hardcore id fan did not enjoy the game. I would be shocked. I think that they will find that it's a refreshing change from anything we've done in the past, and honestly I think that people have modern combat fatigue."
So for instance, anything you pick up in Rage you can carry. None of this constant weapon replacement; just accumulate a massive inventory! That's the good ol' days right there. No, it isn't realistic but maybe we're a little sick of shiny, gritty authenticity. Maybe we want something a little wacky, although it still maintains very serious undertones.
Willits goes on to say he thinks Rage will "review well" and that the game is more about "the sum of its parts." Well, it has been a long wait but we're certainly interested in playing the final result.
