id Software: Rage A Cure For "Modern Combat Fatigue"

These days, the biggest games in the world are often shooters. And in fact, they're often military-style, modern-day combat shooters.

So id Software creative director Tim Willits uses this trend to help promote his team's new project, Rage. In fact, he told VideoGamer that he'd be "shocked" if hardcore id followers didn't take to Rage. It's not only because the game is the first since the team produced DOOM III in 2004; it's also because the avid gamer is suffering from "modern combat fatigue."

"But I would be shocked if a hardcore id fan did not enjoy the game. I would be shocked. I think that they will find that it's a refreshing change from anything we've done in the past, and honestly I think that people have modern combat fatigue."

So for instance, anything you pick up in Rage you can carry. None of this constant weapon replacement; just accumulate a massive inventory! That's the good ol' days right there. No, it isn't realistic but maybe we're a little sick of shiny, gritty authenticity. Maybe we want something a little wacky, although it still maintains very serious undertones.

Willits goes on to say he thinks Rage will "review well" and that the game is more about "the sum of its parts." Well, it has been a long wait but we're certainly interested in playing the final result.

I agree lotus.

World slow and steady is fine with me. Valve takes their time and I love 99.9% of their games along with id's

99% of 4 games isn't a lot of games.

I'd add Day of Defeat to that list from Valve, and Catacomb for id also.

Couldn't get into DoD, too busy with CS and I've never been a fan of anything WorldWar1/2 related.

The first thing that came to mind was Bullet Storm. Those guys said the same thing about modern day FPSs. Let's see if ids new project can make it into the 9 realm.

Well I remmeber everyone at first thought Dead Space was a Bioshock rip off (Not sure why though, they not even of the same genre..), I guess will see if this can be any more than a Fallout rip off.

Bioshock and Dead Space are hardly familiar...never heard anyone say that. Bioshock isn't even scary, its just real atmospheric.

Since none of their games have (IMHO) matched the mood and fun of Doom and Doom II, I will definitely wait for the reviews of this before considering it. But based on the last Doom game, I doubt I will be interested. Somewhere in the transition from Doom II to the 'modern' Doom ad FPS type of game something got lost in the translation. Where Doom & Doom II were fun, and bloody - in a cartoony manner - they didn't take themselves terribly seriously. The newer 'Doom' games have take advantage of the better technology to create more gloomy, gritty and realistic gore and violence, to me that has drowned out the fun and less than seriousness of the old games in favor of a slick, violent shooter presentation that the contemporary gamer appears to love. Rage may be better than that, but I will wait and see.

Considering my enthusiasm for everything iD, i agree about Doom 1, 2, Final Doom and Quake (gotta add that one!)

I still hold out though, because one thing they do with every release is innovate in some way.

True, the original quake was a lot of fun, though I only ever played the head to head shareware version, I was hooked on Civilization at the time....

I'll be picking up Rage for sure. Though I'm waiting patiently for DOOM 4, this one should be enjoyable as well. I've stuck by these guys since the Commander Keen days, and they haven't disappointed me for the most part, except for the whole Quake series. Catacomb was awesome.

I've got modern combat fatigue and I rarely play such games.

Rage should be pretty good but I'll need a review to read like many others. It scared the crap out of me when they chopped it up and reorganized it to fit on Xbox.

You sound like you're still not scared....Dont get it twisted, I love some 360...but Geez has it gimped a few good contenders. UGH, I have a feeling this isnt going to get the great treatment it could have received if the 360 version was excluded...

Again not trying to start the whole "PS3 would be better off without the 360" becuase in all honesty, I could say the same for PS3 to PC. But thats a different story...just saying

I'd go with Sonic, the food establishment not the hedgehog, over Checkers but the rest I agree with. Or did you mean the board game Checkers? lol

I'm getting pretty interested in Rage, can't wait to see how how it goes under the blowtorch of reviewer scrutiny. The little gameplay i've seen so far looks great tho.
Must say my first thought on seeing it (ages ago) was Borderlands: the dark edition, but i've seen on other sites people getting howled down by id purists who say stuff like "Rage was in development before Borderlands and besides, it's totally different, noob!" Or something like that...anyway, it's not on my must-have list yet, but I'm interested.
