An Apocalypse Replaces Resistance 3 In 3DTV Bundle

Of course, the first question everyone is going to have is, "why?"

And unfortunately, we don't have the answer. Initially, it was revealed that Sony would launch a sweet 3DTV bundle, which would include a 24" 3D HDTV, a set of 3D glasses, and a copy of Insomniac's upcoming shooter, Resistance 3. But then, that bundle sorta changed out of the blue; Amazon now lists it with MotorStorm: Apocalypse rather than the third Resistance installment. What's going on?

We don't know why Sony changed the attractive bundle, but a reader tells us R3 developer Insomniac Games has confirmed the change at their Twitter page:

"For those asking about the 3DTV bundle:http://t.co/y0o9u4F — Motorstorm: Apocolypse replaced Resistance 3. Sorry for any inconvenience."

They went on to say that no 3DTV bundle will feature Resistance 3 and that "Sony makes the decision on that front." So of course, all this begs the question above: "why the switch?" Wouldn't it make more sense for a newer - and bigger - title to be included in such a bundle? It's set for release this fall and Apocalypse has been out for a while, so...

Any ideas?

Guess they figured they'd lose a lot of money with the bundle, being that the bd is full of extras and all. It did sound a little too good to be true in the first place.

... And they even replaced it with a game that has a metascore of 78? Oh boy... Hate to say it guys, but this does not look good for R3.
My guess is that it's either a /major/ delay ahead, or Sony is very unhappy with the game at current stage.
Or both.

i got to agree with beamboom. i do not think this bodes well for r3. they just announced the bundle at this years e3. this is a very odd move considering the recent announcement. matching the bundle up with an old game that isn't particularly high scoring seems strange and is very little incentive to get the bundle.

another possibility is insomiac is mutiplatform right now. maybe they could not work out a deal for compensation. who knows? this is a strange move.

we know r3 went gold so it's ready. so what is the problem? why would they yank it from a highly touted bundle? somebody should ask sony directly. this is just something that adds some negativity to game that has plenty of that already. odd to be sure.

@FM23: But Apocalypse is *already* in the bargain bin! It's at £17.99 on Play. This title has been in the bargain bin for weeks already.

@Excels: "another possibility is insomiac is mutiplatform right now" -> Ooooh, never thought of that alternative. But how likely is it that they decide to go multiplat this short before release, and even so, why does it matter to Sony if they did?

But think about it people, this bundle has gone from being bundled with an anticipated upcoming title to being bundled with a mediocre bargain bin title. That is a *strange* choice!

I think it has to do to the "Mature" rating of the game. Motorstorm is "Teen".

But the rating of R3 has not changed recently, has it? How likely is it that Sony changes their mind on this right before the release, only because of the age rating? I don't think this sound plausible at all.

Why not? Personally as an adult I won't by a tv less than 37". But that's just me. But if I were a parent and maybe I speak for parents in general, this package is quite appealing, and even more appealing when the game isn't rated M.

I've ran into this when the PS3 first launched with R:FoM. A mom asked me what games she should get her kid. I pointed out Resistance well honestly because i wasn't thinking for a 10 year old and it was about the best te PS3 had to offer at the time. But she said no because of the rating. So this actually could have a lot to do with it. I highly doubt it's anything that has to do with the development of the game.

I would have agreed that maybe this could be explained as simple as the result of market research by Sony. I do follow that reasoning. It would at least be a theory worth considering if it wasn't for one thing: the timeline here.

We are not talking about a product launch "sometime next year" with a title that are scheduled around that time, we talk about a product that's just around the corner in a bundle that were *confirmed* by Sony in public in front of the entire world press just a handful of weeks ago!

If this was just a case of change of marketing strategy then they could just *add* a second bundle with Motorstorm? But no, they *removed* one product entirely and rebundled the TV with an old title. That is quite the dramatic action now right before launch!

Sounds like they are changing the marketing strategy for this product. As TheOldOne said Resistance is rated M, now the way I see it most self respecting adults aren't going to settle for a 24" 3D TV in their living room but nice parents could probably be convinced to spend $500 on this bundle for one of their kid's rooms. Why that old game? I have no idea, this is just my theory.

Could it maybe be that the graphics in Resistance 3 (at least 3D wise) aren't quite up to par? Even this site just ran an article about the slightly mixed reception to the visuals of R3.

So Jack Tretton is a liar basically? R3 and that 3D bundle WILL surely sell. Now they wanna add MS apocalypse and expect it to sell? And Sony wonders why there products sit on shelfs collecting dust. Sony needs a change in management cause there marketing strategy always fails. Either way R3 is a buy for me.

Well it is true that the multiplayer beta's strong point is not the graphics (resistance3). To me it really felt like playing Res2 with more guns and mods. But I left it at that, thinking its only a Beta and it will be improved.

Now reading all the stuff here, I am really starting to think maybe there is an issue and they are delaying it. It is really odd that they change a bundle like that whithout giving any reasons. If it was something positive I guess they wouldn't mind telling us.

Considering the news about Resistance 3 coming out right now this sounds like one of two things. Either Sony decided the game wasn't of the required quality, or Insomniac wants to polish the game. Either way I suspect a delay to r3 because Sony announced the TV with the Resistance 3 bundle at E3. I'd expect an announcement of a delay to R3 soon, either than, or Insomniac have allowed the game to languish while they focus on the multi-platform title in which case they will face a considerable backlash from formerly loyal PlayStation based Insomniac fans.

Personally I think that Insomniac would be insane to deliver R3 in a lack luster shape, they have been PS exclusive, and that's where their audience is. If that audience begins to perceive a problem, Insomniac is in for a world of hurt.

On the flipside MotorStorm games are always excellent graphically, and this may work really well for the 3D TV as well.

That said, the itch at the back of my head says that MotorStorm is a first party game, and Resistance 3 is not. With Insomniac going multi-platform, Sony may simply have preferred to keep it all as close to in-house as possible.

I had assumed it was because the TV is not being released in the Fall like Sony had originally said (http://us.playstation.com/ps3/accessories/sony-playstation-3d-display-ps3.html - Go to the FAQs at the bottom of the page, it says "November 2011")

Who would want to wait almost 2 more months to get their hands on R3? It's a day one purchase for me.

apparently its because the 3D in resistance 3 is not exactly stellar.
in fact the manager at my EB store got a preview of it a while ago and she said it was the worst she has ever seen!
not to mention, well the beta is out now, the games due out in less then a month, and no 3D or move capability!
what the?
how can you have a beta so close to launch and not offer the 2 biggest features of the game!?
come on, even KZ3 a good 4 months before release offered 3D support!
or uncharted 3 last month a good 4 months before release had 3D support!
so that, then this.
looks like my worries of resistance 3 being a total rush job were justified.
i always said insomniac does not know how to make a bad game.
though looks like they will prove me wrong very soon!
oh well, at least i can now say i told you so!

I bet it's more about the 3D than anything else (though the T rating probably plays some part as well). You need eyes to pop to sell TVs.

Maybe R3 can't currently utilize the new overlaid split-screen feature and MS can.

I think they should have dropped the game entirely and added a second pair of glasses, so you could enjoy the aforementioned feature.

We can pick our own games.

Yhea, I think too it is more about the 3D... it could be that the game is not living up to expectations... even though, from the videos and screenshots I have seen, it does look good.
