Twisted Metal Delayed, Needs More "Polish And Love"

Well, at least it's probably the most candid explanation for a delay in the history of gaming. That's kinda how David Jaffe works; he tells you like it is.

Who else would flat out tell you that if their game released on the announced launch day, it would be straight-up "bad?" According to the Eat Sleep Play co-founder's update at the PlayStation Blog, Twisted Metal will arrive at GamesCom and PAX Prime...but sadly, the game will miss its October 4 release date. It's now set for "early 2012."

Jaffe says they're "just not ready yet" and he adds that Sony has been "a super supportive champion and collaborator." He says that he understands how disappointing and frustrating delays are, but we all have to trust him that his project needs more time to cook. He then quotes Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto- "A late game is only late until it ships. A bad game is bad until the end of time."

Said Jaffe:

"Now, if we shipped Twisted Metal tomorrow – going off the response from folks who have played it – I assure you, it would never be a bad game. Not even close. But we’re aiming for a heck of a lot more than that! With Twisted Metal we plan to ship a multiplayer classic. We plan to ship the best Twisted Metal ever made. We plan to convert a lot of folks who think vehicle combat is a relic best left to 90′s nostalgia. And we plan to explode the belief that the only relevant kind of shooter is a first person one (or a 3rd person one, where you play a human… with a tee shirt not all the way tucked in :)…)."

Best of luck man. We appreciate the honesty and while we are certainly disappointed we won't be playing Twisted Metal this fall, we can be patient. We've been patient this long...what's a few more months? Besides, while a delay is annoying, a bad TM entry from Jaffe and Co. would be downright devastating in our eyes.

I seen this coming a long ways off. It's been obvious by what we've seen the game isn't quite ready. I never got the vibe since we seen it at E3 when it was unveiled that the October release date was for sure!

Needless to say releasing it in 2012, it might see more consumers, since this holiday is just jam packed anyways. But it's a sad day to be sure!

I wonder if being released in 2012 will affect their marketing.
I suppose any game with a preacher character seem apocalyptic but TM I would see a bit of a fit.
The whole 2012 thing is, IMO, basically another Y2K: different origins, but only dangerous depending on the degree people become panicked or taken advantage of.

Yeah, this sucks, but does it? With all the games coming out it would have been tough to fit this one in until early 2012 anyways. The honesty is actually a shock to me! This will no doubt be a great game and will now for sure be a D1P for me.

i agree totally, sorry but im still not blown away the way i should be with this game.

id rather them polish it, cuz the state its in isnt really that impressive.

as long as they dont take forever to release it

i'll have battlefield and uncharted holding me over anyway

I'm not blown away by the game either. It just seems like an extension of Black, which I was not a big fan of. I loved 3 and 4, 1 and 2 were pretty good too.

Smart move I say. I wouldn't be able to afford it day-1 so moving it out will also let it breathe.

He forgot to mention Drake's sagging pants.

Vehicle combat is a relic, so if he plans to resurrect it I say take your time. I follow Jaffe's tweets for tidbits and it seems his team is always pretty busy so I doubt this has anything to do with lazyness like other devs.

Delays can be frustrating when you really want a game, but they should be an option, I mean imagine what kind of game you'd get if it had a schedule to release on every single year...

Very smart delay for obvious reasons because if it does release early next year, this is a first day a purchase unless more good sh*t comes out during its release.

Always happy to see developers take their time and get it right. Twisted Metal will kick even more ass, and it's not like early 2012 is so far away. And god knows there are WAY too many games to buy and play this fall anyway, so I'm happy to get a little breathing room frankly.

there have been some tweets that imply jaffe was having problems at the office so to speak. this tweet stands out:

managed to avoid the politics for almost 20 years. i just always focused on the work. not sure if it is becuase games are getting so expensive or becuase the economy is so bad that people are more scared-and thus more desperate than ever-to keep their **-- but MAN i've never actually noticed the politics and backstabbing and bullsh!t of certain types before the last 3 months i will say this: i don't f*cking like it and i choose not to play, live or die by the work only. the rest is just scared people in the wrong line of work.

that sounds like some internal developement problems to me. i wonder who the hell ticked him off.

wouldn't that imply a bad day at the office so to speak or even some internal development problems? the suits are part of the process. i thought sony was super great to work with. is it somebody from them that are doing this backstabbing and cuasing jaffe some grief? somebody cuased him grief. maybe jaffe is feeling the pressure of trying to revive a dead genre. there are some other tweets that imply things aren't all rosey over there at eat sleep play. maybe i'm reading too much in it. i guess it could just be the jaffe unfiltered affect coming accross as problems.

Hard to tell I guess, it's his company so he should be able to pound the backstabbers into the ground if they are his own employees. "Politics" is such a loaded term in business.

Are you sure that was a tweet, or did you find it somewhere else? Just cause, that one entry you quoted is way more characters than tweeting allows. (155 chars, I think?)

Underdog- There's a way you can tweet more than 140 characters but it puts in a link which you have to fOllow, usually to a blog or something.

Exilcisor- Anyways that doesn't really mean anything internally. That could have to do within the industry as a whole. Think about it.

How about a multiplayer beta launching on October 4th. That would help dull the pain of waiting till next year. I love Twisted Metal and was so excited for it, but I would rather play an excellent game than just a good one.

Now I can dedicate time to Dark Souls and also make it a bit easier to pick up an extra game at the end of the year... I'm thinking BF3 just became a lock.

Well, I suppose this means less of a chance of TM disappointing, and that can only be a good thing. Go Jaffe.

Know what its actually good that twisted metal delayed till next year because we have Uncharted 3 Drake deception ,Resistance 3,skyrim coming out in november and Twisted metal could get ignored during that time.
