Resistance 3 Multiplayer Dev Diary: Modes And Abilities

I'll be delivering my beta impressions very soon but in the meantime, you may want to check out the cogs of the machine.

...boy, that sounded a lot better in my head. Anyway, I was attempting to allude to the behind-the-scenes information from Insomniac, concerning the multiplayer. It's a new developer diary and if you plan to partake of the online fun in the upcoming shooter, you should probably visit the PlayStation Blog. There you will find a video detailing the active and passive abilities, and the "inspirations in developing Resistance 3's multiplayer philosophy, from play modes and weapons to special abilities." Personally, I'm a big fan of such videos; they give me an idea as to how designers implement their ideas through a series of phases. It isn't just magic, as I often like to think it is.

Resistance 3 has gone gold and will be ready to roll on September 6. The Chimera are swarming; it's our last chance to get rid of 'em for good.

That's why it's a beta... To find issues and get them straightened out, ya know?!?!

...and what happens when they get it working right? There will still be more complaints as if it's a retail version... They test internally with a fraction of the amount of people "testing" it now that it's public. Something will go wrong it's inevitable. Look at CoD there's still connection issues a year after Black ops release, but hey I'm just trying to be rational.

The only time black ops ever screws up is mainly a bad host or other people with a bad connection. I get disconnected quite the bit, but it's mainly playing with people who have bad connection.

Radiohead,

Just an FYI,
They stated down in the Blog's comment section that they are aware of the matchmaking & being stuck in the lobby problems & they're working hard to straighten it out.

we all know what people are saying about its graphics. i don't know if this is coming from people's impressions of mp beta or that lackluster demo. there are reports it's a sub hd game. that does not automaticly mean it's a bad looking game becuase it's sub hd, but it is surprising to hear for a ps3 exclusive. i don't think graphics are everything, but ps3 gamers have become conditioned to expect more from ps3 exclusives. i think graphics are very important in a fps since they are usually weaker in other aspects.

finally i would like add is my thoughts about companies letting bad demos out the door. it is very damaging and it is hard reverse negatiive impressions once they are formed. why do companies do that then try to blame it on an old build? it's not a very smart business practice and probably costs companies a lot of sales. the crysis2 ps3 multiplayer demo comes to mind. the reaction to it was so bad ea yanked from psn. crytek shot itself in the foot there much like insomiac did with r3 demo. not very smart all.

Problem is, during development of a multiplayer game a public beta period is more or less *required* to do a real life stress test of their code.

It still obviously is true what you say, it is bad promotion if the beta is bad and should be avoided at all cost. My point is just that these test runs are not only to promote the game, above all it is a necessary part of the development cycle.

Unfortunately Beamboom, many people don't see it that way and regard the beta as a demo of some kind, which in turn offers them a bad impression of the game before they even play what the developers have intended for them. It's too bad really.

i know betas are necessary, but i was referring to the bad demos for r3 and crysis2. the crysis2 mp demo from psn was an old build and could not have been timed worse. it was right before crysis 2's release and ign had that article saying the ps3 version was the worse. while ign was technicly correct becuase the ps3 version was at a lower resolution the final game was not nearly as bad as the demo let on. i think demo was a big mistake. it scared a lot people away from the ps3 version of crysis2. the final game turned out to be better than the demo let on. in fact it is probably the best looking ps3 multiplat out there. i was pretty impressed that crytek managed to make the final game look significantly better than the demo did in a short period of time. i still think the demo was a mistake. same goes for r3's demo.

as for betas. they are almost considered promotional material this day and age. companies need to be very careful with them as well.

Unfortunately I don't think VG companies see demos for what they are: a demonstration of the experience you will get with the full game. I think they have lost sight of that point and are instead using them as ways to make money just like Betas are now too. Stick it with a movie, stick it with a pre-order, stick it with a contest aimed at marketing. Whenever you focus too much on the business side of things, the quality of the offering suffers or is released before it is ready. This can be seen best in Call of Duty multiplayer, it's never a complete product and always broken but it doesn't HAVE to be complete to satisfy the business end.

It seems to me that when it's singleplayer they call it a demo and when it's multiplayer it's a beta. You don't hear about mp demos too often and I think that's the problem. Stop releasing stupid-ass betas. Call it what it really is, a demo. And don't release the beta to the public. Release a demo. Finish your damn product before releasing it. Finish your graphics, get the sound working, get the internet connections running and get the gameplay as smooth as possible THEN release it as a demo and not as some broken beta.

Game devs are still acting like it's 1998. Multiplayer is not some new science. You had it in your last game and it's going to be exactly the same in your next one. Your "demos" should be exactly what the customer is expected to see in the final product. When we see crap and then decide not to buy based on that, who can blame us?

i could not agree more. mp is not a new thing. it is very damaging to have unimpressive betas or demos out there. r3 is suffering from the results of a bad demo and apparently they have a mp beta out there that does not look so hot plus people are having connection issues. these are mostly people who bought socom 4 so it's surprising and discouraging to hear they can't connect. we aren't talking about a ton of gamers here. it can't be that many trying to connect, and you are absolutely right. mp has been around for years. they should have the basics down by now.

you brought up interesting point on another thread alienage. you mentioned ben did not tell people the mp was no good in medal of honor review. i think you said you would not mind if someone who had more of a background in mp looked at that part of a game. i agree with that. how else can i put this? it's just like i would not prefer someone who does not care for the single player part of games covering that part of a game. that's understandable, right? this is not an attack ben or psxe. it is a very well written site thanks to ben plus it has a great community. it is my favorite site so please don't take this the wrong way.

We all agree that a poor public beta is harmful for the release.
But what people need to understand is the difference between a beta and a demo. A multiplayer beta is called a beta because the code is at that stage: The beta stage. We never see a single player beta because beta testing of a single player game can be done inhouse. They don't need a public beta of a single player game.
The only case where a multiplayer game do not need a public beta is when the game is 100% built on an already fully functional multiplayer platform - like the Unreal engine.

So that is why the beta is there: Because it is NEEDED. The developers NEED to test their code before going live. They can't risk hundreds of thousands of customers hammering their servers on release day and nothing works.

A different discussion is the state of the code when it is released as a public beta. Like apparently this beta for R3, and as we also remember from the recent Uncharted 3 beta the first few days. I agree with you all. How did they get past the internal testing without finding these obvious bugs?
Now that is something I struggle explaining. They really need to be a bit more careful before releasing something in public like that.

All I am saying is that the mp betas are there for a reason, and they are betas, not demos. A mp demo can - and should imo - be released later.

i remember Battlefield Bad Company 1 had a multiplayer demo. The demo allowed for about 1 hour of online gameplay. Difference is the demo was after the full game was released.

There's a reason why they call it a beta, calling it a demo would be a disservice imo.

A very good example aaronisbla, wish I had come up with that one. :)
That was a demonstration of the final Bad Company product, or a "demo" for short. :)

Eh, not that interested in the multiplayer, but I'm still taking it for a spin, and have secured the ability to do so at a mate's place(!). In the meantime, I'll be interested to see what the folks around here think of the beta.

Cogs one, Ben nothin'

I have to say I actually enjoyed the Resistance 2 multiplayer for a little while. I played about 2 weeks, which is a lot longer than the 0 weeks I usually play. Some of those abilities are weird though, like Dash.

Oh they are. Every FPS Dev (no offense to insomniac) thinks that they are just a couple of tweaks away from gaining the entire Call of Duty online audience.

always said they could never make a bad game, but R3 looks like proving that wrong.
always said insomniac will never release things till there perfect, well dont even need to look to R3 for that......

Does anybody know if there are going to be any pre-order bonus content for Canadian retailers???

I am quite displeased to hear that there will be no special edition besides the doomsday edition in north america.

Maybe it's because the collector's edition of resistance 2 didn't sell well because I still see a lot of them on the shelves in retailers today.
