Resistance 3 Multiplayer Dev Diary: Modes And Abilities
I'll be delivering my beta impressions very soon but in the meantime, you may want to check out the cogs of the machine.
...boy, that sounded a lot better in my head. Anyway, I was attempting to allude to the behind-the-scenes information from Insomniac, concerning the multiplayer. It's a new developer diary and if you plan to partake of the online fun in the upcoming shooter, you should probably visit the PlayStation Blog. There you will find a video detailing the active and passive abilities, and the "inspirations in developing Resistance 3's multiplayer philosophy, from play modes and weapons to special abilities." Personally, I'm a big fan of such videos; they give me an idea as to how designers implement their ideas through a series of phases. It isn't just magic, as I often like to think it is.
Resistance 3 has gone gold and will be ready to roll on September 6. The Chimera are swarming; it's our last chance to get rid of 'em for good.

finally i would like add is my thoughts about companies letting bad demos out the door. it is very damaging and it is hard reverse negatiive impressions once they are formed. why do companies do that then try to blame it on an old build? it's not a very smart business practice and probably costs companies a lot of sales. the crysis2 ps3 multiplayer demo comes to mind. the reaction to it was so bad ea yanked from psn. crytek shot itself in the foot there much like insomiac did with r3 demo. not very smart all.

It still obviously is true what you say, it is bad promotion if the beta is bad and should be avoided at all cost. My point is just that these test runs are not only to promote the game, above all it is a necessary part of the development cycle.

as for betas. they are almost considered promotional material this day and age. companies need to be very careful with them as well.

Game devs are still acting like it's 1998. Multiplayer is not some new science. You had it in your last game and it's going to be exactly the same in your next one. Your "demos" should be exactly what the customer is expected to see in the final product. When we see crap and then decide not to buy based on that, who can blame us?

you brought up interesting point on another thread alienage. you mentioned ben did not tell people the mp was no good in medal of honor review. i think you said you would not mind if someone who had more of a background in mp looked at that part of a game. i agree with that. how else can i put this? it's just like i would not prefer someone who does not care for the single player part of games covering that part of a game. that's understandable, right? this is not an attack ben or psxe. it is a very well written site thanks to ben plus it has a great community. it is my favorite site so please don't take this the wrong way.

But what people need to understand is the difference between a beta and a demo. A multiplayer beta is called a beta because the code is at that stage: The beta stage. We never see a single player beta because beta testing of a single player game can be done inhouse. They don't need a public beta of a single player game.
The only case where a multiplayer game do not need a public beta is when the game is 100% built on an already fully functional multiplayer platform - like the Unreal engine.
So that is why the beta is there: Because it is NEEDED. The developers NEED to test their code before going live. They can't risk hundreds of thousands of customers hammering their servers on release day and nothing works.
A different discussion is the state of the code when it is released as a public beta. Like apparently this beta for R3, and as we also remember from the recent Uncharted 3 beta the first few days. I agree with you all. How did they get past the internal testing without finding these obvious bugs?
Now that is something I struggle explaining. They really need to be a bit more careful before releasing something in public like that.
All I am saying is that the mp betas are there for a reason, and they are betas, not demos. A mp demo can - and should imo - be released later.

kinda worrying when you think the games due out in a month!
looks like insomniac have learned nothing from resistance 2!
my lord that had more bugs then a greeks garden!
3rd times the charm?
always said they could never make a bad game, but R3 looks like proving that wrong.
always said insomniac will never release things till there perfect, well dont even need to look to R3 for that......
so what will the 3rd one be?
2 strikes, bases are loaded, what shal be the kicker?
come on ted you can do better then this!!!!!!!!!!
is this how you really want to leave your fans after all these years?
would be like epic finishing on gears 2!

I am quite displeased to hear that there will be no special edition besides the doomsday edition in north america.
Maybe it's because the collector's edition of resistance 2 didn't sell well because I still see a lot of them on the shelves in retailers today.
