Bethesda: RAGE Assets Are Identical Across All Platforms
Wait, wait...we've heard this somewhere before.
Amidst a flurry of rumors that id Software's RAGE will be slightly inferior on the PlayStation 3, the developers have responded to the concerns. According to Destructoid, Bethesda claims that all three upcoming versions of the hotly anticipated game will be identical. Said marketing chief Pete Hines:
"We also had RAGE running on PS3 in the press room [at QuakeCon] for folks to do their previews. We are very pleased with the PS3 version of RAGE. One of the cornerstones of the new idTech5 technology is that all assets are identical across all platforms. The experience that players have will be the same on all three platforms."
Yeah, well, that's not likely to halt the skepticism and arguments. PC-oriented developers typically generate products that look and run better on PC and Xbox 360; the PS3 versions are often found lacking. At the very least, though, the differences have been relatively minor and as the generation progresses, developers fare better with the PS3 when it comes to multiplatform games.
And we are excited for RAGE. It could be one of the year's best...

Clever way to say it. And really, I see the 360's involvement as a detriment to the whole. Rage was originally promoting id's giga texture tech, boasting the engine's ability to shift massive textures. Massive textures need massive storage. There's no way a last gen medium, DVD, hasn't created concessions for Rage's development. Games on PC can have game files "installed" from multiple discs to create the whole. 360 games must be designed to run on HDD'less hardware. To say it has the same assets among all 3 systems is to say much of the BD is left unfilled.

The reality of 22GB for the 360 install probably amounts to something less if, instead, it was designed to be placed all onto one BD disc. Duplicate discs without much redundancy means either the game has to be strictly linear (and it appears Rage is not), or the disc has to recycle game world assets for both discs. So the net gain of game assets on the second disc will more than likely add up to something quite a bit lower than 6.8GBs of data.
But anyway, props to Id and Bethseda for breaking the single disc barrier and at least attempting to squeeze in more content for a gamer's $60.

To tell you the truth I got a little thrill when I heard that Carmack was troubled by the fact that consoles held his PC version back. Get with the times man, PC gaming can't hack it in the big leagues.

are we forgetting that infamous 2 was on torrent sites 6 weeks before release!?
or KZ3 & SOCOM 4 a good month before release?
not to mention all the 360 games that leak early.
nothing pisses me off more then when people defend developers for shafting the PC!
hell, if anything piracy is WORSE on consoles then on PC!
no, FACT!
if it was not worse on PC then why did not the witcher 2, star craft 2, and all the PC exclusives turn up on P2P sites months before release like their console brethren?
not to mention its a pain in the a$$ to pirate PC games these days, especially if they have online activation!
all you need to pirate ps3, wii, psp, ds, mobile, or 360 games is the right FW, could not be simpler!
especially with developers on the ps3 screwing up and releasing 3.55 encrypted patches for 3.6+ encrypted games like what happened to infamous 2, SOCOM 4, operation flash point, almost every 3.6 encrypted game!

firstly having so many companies making one thing who takes precedence?
what happens if sony wants something in there but ninty does not?
who gets their way?
then why release a top of the line system if your not competing with anyone?
if you have the market to yourself, then whats stopping them from just releasing a slightly upgraded version of todays consoles.
its like a shop, if theres only one shop that sells a product the price for said item will be through the roof!
sell the product at other stores and watch the price plummet as each compete for a sale.
same thing goes for consoles.

one thing i wonder is if there will be any kind of install on the ps3. this might help the blu ray latency problem that cuases the texture load in problem. right?

we shall se what's going on here, but i suspect there might be some truth to what the sixth axis claimed. carmack has mentioned the blu ray latency issue as well. one thing i wonder is if a hd install would help. it seems like it would. i know the 360 has a massive intall, but i've yet to hear anything about a ps3 intall.
one thing you are right about in your post below is this is not 2007. thank god for that. ps3 multiplats have come a long way. i still get nervous about them, though.

how do you know thats not true?
stop taking there words so literally, when they say identical they dont mean 100% identical.
im sure they will have a large HDD install, the mega texture system has to stream so much data it would choke up the system.
thats one area sony really shot themselves in the foot, the read speeds are slower then DVD and allot of developers are having trouble because of that.
i remember team bondi complaining about it too.

crysis 2 was near identical on the 360 and ps3!
this aint 2007 anymore!
if theres anyone who knows how to solidify things, and always try and make it a fair battle its id!
plus quite a few times over the years of development we have heard the opposite, that the ps3 was running slightly better!
its really starting to bug me how now every single time the ps3 version is not sold the fanboys are up in arms, oh its gonna suck!
come on, lets not have a repeat of battlefield 3.......
developers always like to bring the latest build to these things, (for obvious reasons) maybe they had not had a chance to finalize the ps3 version for quakecon.
can we please stop this overreacting?
just because a specific version of a games not getting as much attention does not mean it sucks!
my lord, gamers today are getting more and more like spoiled brats!
things like this really make me not get into the industry.
you pour years of your life into these things, years of overtime, blood sweat and tears, and this is how they thank you!

not sure where this is coming from.
"the xbox 360 version matches the pc's 60 fps while the ps3 version is just at 20-30 fps." carmack told edge magazine. "the ps3 lags a little bit in terms of getting performance out if it. the rasteriser is just slower-no two ways about it." carmack said. "the rsx is slower than what we have in 360. the cpu is about the same. but the rsx is slow and that's where a lot of work has been. splitting up jobs on the ps3." he said as well.
none of that implys better ps3 version. sounds like another pc centric developer having problems.

i don't think so. in fact bethesda had to stomp out a lot fires accross the internet to assure gamers that indeed both versions would be at 60 fps. i just used that quote to knock down blank lines claim of hearing the ps3 version being better when everything i have read has implied the exact opposite. pc centric develpoper struggling with the ps3
there is also the sixth axis hands on preview. they claim both versions aren't idendical and that the ps3 suffers from a lot of texture load in. we shall see, but i would be shocked if both versions are identical. aboout 99% of the time a ps3 multiplat will be inferior in some way. that's just an unfortunate truth of this generation.

i said they did not show off the ps3 version, having it behind closed doors for media people to do previews does not count as showing it off!
kinda has to be public to count.
i dunno about you but unfortunately i dont have the ability to see through solid objects.
still working on it, the last formula worked quite well, but caused some test subjects eyes to grow so large the pressure exploded their sockets!
