Forty Lucky Gamers Will Play Final Fantasy XIII-2 Early

If this isn't fanservice, nothing is.

Square Enix will bring a playable version of Final Fantasy XIII-2 to the Tokyo Game Show, but not everyone will be able to attend. So for forty lucky gamers, they'll be able to go hands-on with the upcoming sequel a little earlier:

According to Andriasang, Square Enix has announced an early demo event and "fan meeting" that will take place on September 10 at the company's main office in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward. Those who get in will play the latest version of the game, and receive an introduction from the development staff. There will be two phases at the event - each with 20 participants - and each section will be two and a half hours long. If you're interested in applying, check the Square Enix Members page. ...and learn how to read Japanese.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is bound to be popular, especially in Japan. And to get a chance to play it early...? Cool.

After seeing some of the trailers, I'm sort of curious about how cutsy this game will be with Serah and that new guy.

FFX-2 was sickeningly cutsy (despite a deeper story beneath) with lame-o dialogue, but it's battle system was one of the best in FF franchise, imo.

I sincerely hope it's a great game. I'll wait for reviews to determine if it will be an early or late purchase. FFXIII's price came down quickly, so this could potentially be the first FF I don't get day one since the NES days. I'm sure I'll get it eventually though.

i share your concern about the cutsy look of serah and the new guy. i also share in your hopes that this will be a good game. i said it before i liked ff13 despite its flaws so i'm not too worried about this game. i sure hope it does not stray into ffx-2 cutsy territory. how heavily is lightning featured? can we play as her? or we stuck with the cutsy srerah and new guy most of the game?

i'm ready for my jrpg fix with sky high production values. can't be too picky...we don't have a lot of jrpg titles to pick from.

i kinda liked final fantasy x-2. i didnt mind all the cutsy bits at all. i have to admit though, the singing parts were a bit much. i hope they go back to final fantasy X and X-2 battle system again.

i hope they bring back the cutscene viewer. i want to be able to go and watch all the cutscenes again without going through the story again like luca stadium in final fantasy X. i really want to see the final fantasy XIII cutscenes again in its full glory but i'm not playing it over again just for that.

They've already said that xiii-2 would not be a girly jpop adventure like X-2. This is a rare instance i believe them.

The game focuses on Noel with some parts playable as Light.

The battle system is tweaked but essentially the same.

yeah, i never minded all the cutsy stuff. i just enjoyed playing it. i even kept my team in their stuffed toy outfits.

i think rinoa is my favorite. i loved that dance scene with squal and rinoa. actually have a save just before it so i can see it any time.

Haha - I actually had to look up the word "cutsy" cause I did not know it, but to no success. Then I assumed it meant the same as cutesy just written in some American dialect or something, since everyone wrote it that way.

sorry about the cutesy misspelling. hey i just copied underdog. he isn't known for many grammatical errors so i thought i was somehow wrong when i wanted to put an e in there.

i agree with him about the cutesy aspect of x-2. my god there was so much cheese in that game. it was almost cringeworthy. i assure i suffer from no machoismo complex...i loved xena warrior princess for example(please doin't luagh). i tend to like games with strong female leads. it's still a good game but could have been way better.

I used to be a Final Fantasy Fanatic.
These days its all about Skyrim!, Rage, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3 and U3.

I guess its cool that SE is doing fan service but as for me I will maybe consider this FF game when its at a bargain bin price of twenty bucks and only if no other game is in my PS3.

Well 40 gamers should supply adequate critisizm, good and/or bad. Unlinke FFXIII, we'll at least have a good starting point as to what to expect this time around from this game. I really don't think I'll be non-skeptical of Square-Enix again after this gen.

The only reason that I have hope for FF Versus 13 is becuase of the interviews with Nomura and what he has experienced thus far with the game. As for 13-2, I'm waiting to hear what these yet to be determined 40 gamers think.

Ive been wanting Versus for..god when did they show the first teaser? Its been a while and nothing new has come to surface since we saw a few screen shots and a short video from the screens shots.
It could be this generations "FF7" but i would still like to see 7 remade. If they give me Versus ...just a release date ill shut my mouth about it.

This is probably to make up for what they aren't showing. Final Fantasy versus 13. From what I heard, they stopped development to finish 13-2. I would have rather wanted 13versus done first. I've been waiting for so long. Now I won't see it until who knows when.

a different website reported it as "40 lucky final fantasy fans" can try final fantasy XIII-2 early. first thing on my mind was "yeah right, maybe the few they gained from 13 because a lot of real fans were lost when that game came out". they're probably picking select people that love the hell out of final fantasy 13 in order to build hype and a way to say it is "the game final fantasy fans want". all i know is that like final fantasy 13-2 like 13 its going to be a great game just not a final fantasy. that and the news i heard so far about the battle system means a bargain bin purchase for me.

by game standards, final fantasy 13 is AAA quality, objectively of course. the typical square enix quality is there but the traditional final fantasy content wasnt. as a final fantasy it barely passes D- for me.

Production values are great, but I surmise it would be hard to find even a dedicated fan who could objectively call it more than a AA. You just can't have a game that runs you through a tube and tutorial for 20 hours, then does most of the fighting for you. I still like the game but COME on.

I couldn't get into 13, I prefer the old Final Fantasy's to this one. All the game did for me was 'pretty' with the cut scenes and such.

Could care less for some of the characters though, the only characters i liked was; Snow (a bit could get annoying though), Fang, and Serah.

Hope was very annoying.

I don't think it's fan service, I think it's careful ass wiping in action. They aim to get the fan hated XIII poop off themselves by saying "Look we fixed some things, play and them disseminate impressions"

Hearts and minds campaign plus word of mouth because they know it won't be able to sell on the FF name alone any more like its predecessor.

The good news is this might answer some all important questions that SE refuses to answer about this game that they slapped together in a year.

seeing as the way to enter into the drawing is actually signing up and then amount of news we know about it, its pretty clear to say that their most loyal fans arent the ones lining up to try this game. with that in mind, i still believe that this is a plan to build up hype for another disappointing final fantasy game. Its just a way of trying to tell the fans they lost that they are catering to the fans, just not using the actual long time fans of the series.

they may say that they sold x amount of final fantasy 13 copies but if i remember correctly that a whole lot of those copies were sold back. i doubt people will be lining up on day 1 for a final fantasy game anytime soon.

Granted, FFXII sold even less than that, but that game was basically an MMO without online and kinda sucked.

off topic: us ps3 gamers have a lot unreleased/ on hold exclusives e.g agent, the getaway 3, the last guardian, ff 13 versus, eight days and all those sequels we want e.g kingdom hearts 3, jack and daxter 4, new syphon filter game...
