Bioshock Infinite Developer: We Love The PS3 Platform

We've already heard one developer tell PlayStation 3 owners they needn't worry; that was when id Software said RAGE would be almost identical across all platforms.

And now, it's Irrational Games boss Ken Levine concerning the upcoming Bioshock Infinite. In speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Levine attempted to reassure PS3 owners by being firm and honest; in truth, his words are awfully encouraging, and we're inclined to believe him. He says they started the Infinite project knowing they'd be on the PS3, so forget about a shoddy port. Furthermore:

"Look, I’m not blowing smoke here. We were Xbox-first for the original game, and now we have something to demonstrate to the PlayStation 3 audience. We love the platform. I have three PS3s at my house. It’s a great game system and I love the kinds of games that are coming out on PSN."

Levine also talked about the possibility of 3D for his game; the feature isn't confirmed and he wants to make sure he isn't just "checking a box." In other words, he doesn't want to do it just 'cuz a lot of other games do it. But we're impressed by Levine's explanation concerning Bioshock on Sony's platform; the guy is charismatic and very candid, and we're perfectly willing to take his word for it.

The man is just trying to reassure fans that the game will not be a shoddy port.

I have no idea, Bioshock 1 was a very good port and this game won't even BE a port of any kind.

Ophidian,
The porting of the original Bioshock was handled by a different team (Digital Extremes, I believe) with Irrational only overseeing it. With minimal experience and the fact that the team's only game this gen was initially 360 exclusive, it's understandable that people may be a little concerned.

Bioshock 1 is one of the few ports that did well.

Even if they did port it over again I wouldn't be too concerned.

I like how Levine also stated.....

"The latest title in the BioShock franchise, once again under the Irrational banner, is utilizing the PS3 for all of its potential.

“We’ve become very familiar with [the PS3],” says Levine to the PlayStation Blog.

“And we have a new engine for BioShock Infinite, so we started the game knowing we’d be on PS3.

"We started thinking about how to leverage the multiple cores from the start of development, so we’re in a much better place this time on PS3.”

As do I. He must understand value. I do however wonder how many 360's he has/had in his house though.

I am hoping for some radical implementation of the PS Move too!

Interesting that he focuses on PSN games. Not sure what to make of that, but I'm glad they respect the platform unlike id Software does.

I know we hear this junk a lot but I believe them, even if Bioshock 2 did come out wonkier than Bio 1 on PS3 we have to bear in mind that instead of porting they had to make the ancient Unreal 2 engine work where it... doesn't.

As far as 3D goes, I'm not a big proponent but I think it could be an asset here when you take into account how we will be riding the rails with the skyhook or whatever its called I'm reminded of being on a roller coaster (where I am quite comfortable even on the biggest and baddest) and I think 3D could lend an extra something special.

good point about id. carmack has been very critical of the ps3's asymetric cpu and says the rsx is poor. he was also critical of sony's ps3 tools and says ms is "light years" ahead of sony in that department. he has also mentioned blu ray latency issues. in fact he has had nothing good to say about the ps3.

I was more intrigued by what he had to say in regards to the reality tears that are in the game, and his attention to detail. That being said, it's good to know that they have a handle on the PS3 and we don't really have to worry. Can't wait for this one.

Games that are identical on all formats, should we see that as a positive or negative? I always wonder how well tailored a multiplatform game for the PS3 really is. I can't really come up with a PS3 version of a multiplat game that wouldn't be better in one way or another with some some console specific tweeks. Wondering if porting puts any strain on the system itself. When multiplats freeze up for the lack of updates is when I really start thinking (Yes, I'm looking at you CoD, every single one of you because that happens every year no matter whos the dev, making me reset 4 times a *#$%ing day till a good patch comes - it never fails). How long ago was Bayonetta again? They more than made up for it with Vanquish's gameplay but it shows me that visuals are not everything. I would like for PS3 multiplat software to work as well under the hood or better than the 360 version all the time but that means extra hours and more cash spent on 'a console that less people are playing on'. Unless you got the experience, already know your way around the tech and/or actually put the work in to make each version have their own bright spots, then you might as well make the 360 the lead console because its not going to get much better than that. I would rather have longer load times and better graphics than short loads with average visuals. Its good to read news like this, certainly got my attention.

if a game looks identical on both platforms i would call that a good thing. the unfortunate truth is on 99% of the multiplat titles out there the ps3 version is almost always inferior in some way. it's unfortunate that this still goes on so many years after the ps3's release. i have long given up on the dream that ps3 multiplats can look better(i can count those games on 2 fingers) so i would settle on identical. if life was fair the 360 is owed about 229 games that look worse on its platform.

if we were to believe the sony hype before the ps3 arrived it should have never been such a squeeze to get multiplat titles that look identical. let's face it, it is in fact a squeeze. i will eat my shorts if rage is identical becuase i hear it's not. if bioshock infinite is identical it will be a rare example of a multiplat developer telling the truth for once. almost identical does not cut it by the way. i wonder why developers are even being asked about the ps3 versions of multiplats after all these years? could it be gamers and gaming press have noticed a pattern on ps3 multiplats?. ps3 multiplat=inferior version in some way for whatever reasons.

believe it or not some of us do see differences, i did not mention bayonetta. all those games i mentioned look better on the 360 in some way. are you saying when you look at madden or ac2 those 2 versions look identical? ac2 looks and plays better on the 360. all the ea soprts titles look better. i've spent a lot of time comparing them when i happened to take my ps3 over to friends house when crysis 2 came out. maybe the differences are small but they certainly are noticable. i'm not talking about screenshots, either.

there are some of us who care when that happens. i just flat out disagree that 99% of the time there are no differences. if you flip that statement on its head it would be more accurate. how many times have we seen ps3 multiplat titles rated lower on gamespot or ign? i guess they are just making that up becuase of ms? i despise ms but i know what my eyes tell me.

the situation may have improved recently with the likes of la noire, and portal 2. it hardly makes up for years of inferior multiplats, though.

@max

you bring up an interesting point about gt planet. they are pretty harsh over there but i don't think it's coming from ms exactly. some just call it out on the awful shadows, and want more premium cars. it might have been better if pd went for 720 p, and use the extra resources on the shadows and alpha textures. i try to look at the non premium cars as a bonus, but apparently there are many who like photo mode and complain when they take those cars into photo mode. they also complain about the rooster tailing(jagged smoke effects) when even premium cars hit smoke or water. what i'm getting at is there are a lot of graphic whores(i admit i am one) out there that like the photo mode. some are reasonable and would just like the option to turn the shadows and smoke effects off.

i think gt5 is very good. i think it's fair to say the presentation is uneven. it looks great at times but at other times not so much. i question the wisdom of going for 1080 p and including the non premium cars.

I really can't compare most of the games you mentioned because I'm a one system guy but have had a peek or two when I see a friend playing their 360. I play my share of multiplat games, GTA, RDR, Fallout 3, AC, CoD, afew others, I enjoyed the hell out of the original Bioshock so for me graphics does not trump all other aspects of a game. Its just strange sometimes with other games, even if I never see the 360 version, while playing the PS3 version I'll experience things that I know that could have been improved on yet weren't. I think what I said earlier sums it up my feelings pretty well in my opinion, if the 360 version is the standard and nothing sets its PS3 version apart from that it at times feels like opportunities were missed. One game thats always been a shining example of what can happen with some extra PS3 dev time is Oblivion, less loading, better presentation, I would love it if all multiplat titles came out on the 360 1st only to come out optimized for the PS3 later. That might get me thumbed down but I would not have a single problem with it, it just seems that some devs are too busy spinning plates simultaneously to bring out the best out of each platform. On example is CoD Black Ops, underperforms on two fronts, PS3 and PC with different aspects lacking on release (and some still) on both versions.

Oh, about

when a developer only shows one version of game that is always reason for concern. all that awesome skyrim and bioshock infinite footage was created with the 360. if they have so much love for the platform show it some love and show some freaking ps3 footage for a change. that would do a lot to calm people down.

you say you got a 360 right? pop in any multiplat game like bioshock 1 and 2, fallout 3, ac2, rdr, mafia 2 or even a madden game and tell me those games are identical. they are not. it's not a media created event when countless multiplat games turn out inferior on the ps3. there is always reason for concern on a ps3 multiplat until a developer shows otherwise. this developer has not yet. having said that i have heard some things that make me want to believe that the ps3 version will be just as good. i remain hopeful, but guarded so to speak.

i do agree people were harsh on bf3 ps3 footage. but that's kind of what happens when a developer goes around showcasing it on the pc and talks up frostbite 2.0 like its the second coming. there were statements coming from ea that there would be very little difference accross all platforms so they deserved to be called out if that's not the case. people had high expectations.

did it ever come to mind that maybe they just have not finished the later build on said platform?
maybe the 360 version was already compiled and ready to be shown off, so whats the point doing all the extra work to get the ps3 version ready too?
seriously, people are just crying over spilt milk!
and they say i bi*** allot!
if getting the best version is so important then go buy games on your PC.
every single console game out there thats on PC is running on low settings at 720P normally.
almost any PC these days would be able to crush that!
plus you get the added benefit of all the indie games on steam, let alone the countless mods.
like the new eyefinity mod for san andreas, brings the game to the RAGE engine and makes it look like freaking GTAIV!

Excelsior: Most or all of those games are perfectly fine on PS3; in fact, the differences are so minor they're almost non-existent. I frequently see both versions and there absolutely has NOT been many cases of significant multiplatform differences outside of games like Bayonetta.

All this crap about a pixel or two being off in one version, and spending hours dissecting a single screenshot, desperately trying to find a difference between two platforms, is starting to irritate me. 99% of all multiplatform games released are absolutely no different between the PS3 and 360, and that's that.

What Excelsior says is true.

It's not crap. I wish it just were a Pixel or two being off in the PS version. And you don't have to spend much time looking for the differences, they are all over the place in lower frame rates, cut game assets, lower resolution rendering, jaggies because of no Anti-aliasing and on and on. The differences are very obvious to me.

Yet, my PS3 is my first console but, like Excelsior, I'm also frustrated.

I bought the 360 first and later the PS3 because I believed the hype.

Because of that, I was specting multiplats to be better on PS3, not equal, better. Nowdays, I hope games come out the same (when I bought the PS3 I thought they were going to be superior because of the suppossed superior performance of the PS3)across versions but, unfortunately, that's not going to be the case.

Thank the sweet Lord! Just as I began considering the worst for us, it seems there is a gleaming light of hope. You see, I'm convinced that the push-over for the next console will draw a lot out of the current gens fit and finish. Some of these devs are aching at the end of their project from two consoles to script and debug. Throw in 2 or possibly 3 more consoles of the coming gen and I think we (both Xbox and PS fans) will have to deal with more glitches, worse game polishing and less optimization. My cup is always half empty, though.
