Bioshock Infinite Developer: We Love The PS3 Platform
We've already heard one developer tell PlayStation 3 owners they needn't worry; that was when id Software said RAGE would be almost identical across all platforms.
And now, it's Irrational Games boss Ken Levine concerning the upcoming Bioshock Infinite. In speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Levine attempted to reassure PS3 owners by being firm and honest; in truth, his words are awfully encouraging, and we're inclined to believe him. He says they started the Infinite project knowing they'd be on the PS3, so forget about a shoddy port. Furthermore:
"Look, I’m not blowing smoke here. We were Xbox-first for the original game, and now we have something to demonstrate to the PlayStation 3 audience. We love the platform. I have three PS3s at my house. It’s a great game system and I love the kinds of games that are coming out on PSN."
Levine also talked about the possibility of 3D for his game; the feature isn't confirmed and he wants to make sure he isn't just "checking a box." In other words, he doesn't want to do it just 'cuz a lot of other games do it. But we're impressed by Levine's explanation concerning Bioshock on Sony's platform; the guy is charismatic and very candid, and we're perfectly willing to take his word for it.

The porting of the original Bioshock was handled by a different team (Digital Extremes, I believe) with Irrational only overseeing it. With minimal experience and the fact that the team's only game this gen was initially 360 exclusive, it's understandable that people may be a little concerned.

"The latest title in the BioShock franchise, once again under the Irrational banner, is utilizing the PS3 for all of its potential.
“We’ve become very familiar with [the PS3],” says Levine to the PlayStation Blog.
“And we have a new engine for BioShock Infinite, so we started the game knowing we’d be on PS3.
"We started thinking about how to leverage the multiple cores from the start of development, so we’re in a much better place this time on PS3.”

I know we hear this junk a lot but I believe them, even if Bioshock 2 did come out wonkier than Bio 1 on PS3 we have to bear in mind that instead of porting they had to make the ancient Unreal 2 engine work where it... doesn't.
As far as 3D goes, I'm not a big proponent but I think it could be an asset here when you take into account how we will be riding the rails with the skyhook or whatever its called I'm reminded of being on a roller coaster (where I am quite comfortable even on the biggest and baddest) and I think 3D could lend an extra something special.

if we were to believe the sony hype before the ps3 arrived it should have never been such a squeeze to get multiplat titles that look identical. let's face it, it is in fact a squeeze. i will eat my shorts if rage is identical becuase i hear it's not. if bioshock infinite is identical it will be a rare example of a multiplat developer telling the truth for once. almost identical does not cut it by the way. i wonder why developers are even being asked about the ps3 versions of multiplats after all these years? could it be gamers and gaming press have noticed a pattern on ps3 multiplats?. ps3 multiplat=inferior version in some way for whatever reasons.

there are some of us who care when that happens. i just flat out disagree that 99% of the time there are no differences. if you flip that statement on its head it would be more accurate. how many times have we seen ps3 multiplat titles rated lower on gamespot or ign? i guess they are just making that up becuase of ms? i despise ms but i know what my eyes tell me.
the situation may have improved recently with the likes of la noire, and portal 2. it hardly makes up for years of inferior multiplats, though.
@max
you bring up an interesting point about gt planet. they are pretty harsh over there but i don't think it's coming from ms exactly. some just call it out on the awful shadows, and want more premium cars. it might have been better if pd went for 720 p, and use the extra resources on the shadows and alpha textures. i try to look at the non premium cars as a bonus, but apparently there are many who like photo mode and complain when they take those cars into photo mode. they also complain about the rooster tailing(jagged smoke effects) when even premium cars hit smoke or water. what i'm getting at is there are a lot of graphic whores(i admit i am one) out there that like the photo mode. some are reasonable and would just like the option to turn the shadows and smoke effects off.
i think gt5 is very good. i think it's fair to say the presentation is uneven. it looks great at times but at other times not so much. i question the wisdom of going for 1080 p and including the non premium cars.

oh so and so version has not been shown off yet, so that must mean it sucks!
REALLY starting to get old!
to be honest i wont be surprised if media events and things start being exactly that.
MEDIA only!
and when they do, dont come bitching because you have no one but yourselves to blame!
like when DICE showed off the ps3 version of BF3.
looked fantastic, but of course there has to be idiots out there complaining it does not look as good as the PC version.
like saying hey my 1999 golf is not as fast as a brand new ferrari.
nah, you think!?

you say you got a 360 right? pop in any multiplat game like bioshock 1 and 2, fallout 3, ac2, rdr, mafia 2 or even a madden game and tell me those games are identical. they are not. it's not a media created event when countless multiplat games turn out inferior on the ps3. there is always reason for concern on a ps3 multiplat until a developer shows otherwise. this developer has not yet. having said that i have heard some things that make me want to believe that the ps3 version will be just as good. i remain hopeful, but guarded so to speak.
i do agree people were harsh on bf3 ps3 footage. but that's kind of what happens when a developer goes around showcasing it on the pc and talks up frostbite 2.0 like its the second coming. there were statements coming from ea that there would be very little difference accross all platforms so they deserved to be called out if that's not the case. people had high expectations.

maybe the 360 version was already compiled and ready to be shown off, so whats the point doing all the extra work to get the ps3 version ready too?
seriously, people are just crying over spilt milk!
and they say i bi*** allot!
if getting the best version is so important then go buy games on your PC.
every single console game out there thats on PC is running on low settings at 720P normally.
almost any PC these days would be able to crush that!
plus you get the added benefit of all the indie games on steam, let alone the countless mods.
like the new eyefinity mod for san andreas, brings the game to the RAGE engine and makes it look like freaking GTAIV!

All this crap about a pixel or two being off in one version, and spending hours dissecting a single screenshot, desperately trying to find a difference between two platforms, is starting to irritate me. 99% of all multiplatform games released are absolutely no different between the PS3 and 360, and that's that.

It's not crap. I wish it just were a Pixel or two being off in the PS version. And you don't have to spend much time looking for the differences, they are all over the place in lower frame rates, cut game assets, lower resolution rendering, jaggies because of no Anti-aliasing and on and on. The differences are very obvious to me.
Yet, my PS3 is my first console but, like Excelsior, I'm also frustrated.
I bought the 360 first and later the PS3 because I believed the hype.
Because of that, I was specting multiplats to be better on PS3, not equal, better. Nowdays, I hope games come out the same (when I bought the PS3 I thought they were going to be superior because of the suppossed superior performance of the PS3)across versions but, unfortunately, that's not going to be the case.
