That's downright comical..As a owner of both systems, the PS3 easily outshines the 360. The exclusives show as much also..

Best system of all time has got to be the PS2. The longevity and the quality of games stands out.

Yep, PS2 was the best. I really think that in another ten years people will look back and see that no other system was THAT amazing for THAT long. I mean it had almost every game worth playing, and it was a sensational era for gaming. Gamecube and Xbox only had a handful of games worth checking out. It was seriously like a 20-to-1 ratio for a while there.

Hmm, PS2 did steal the competition. Though I still wouldn't consider it being the top dog due to early disk-reading errors. SNES and PSX on the other hand had the greatest amount of RPG and puzzle titles.

He's probably just saying the 360 is better because he can develop for it easier. PS3's architecture is kicking his ass, so he's pissed about it. This is why ps3 devs are the best; no complaints just hard work.

I'd say anytime a major development head makes a comment like that, it's newsworthy. Keeps us connected to what the big guys are thinking/saying. And since it is 100% on topic with gaming, I'd say yes. It's news. Perhaps not a surprise, but news.

I've owned a 360, and it was a pretty sweet console, it had some great games, it has some great specs, but imo the ps3 is the better console. In most games the graphics look better, with few exceptions. I've seen some great looking games on both consles.

I can understand if devs say the 360 is the better console if its easier to work on, I guess. But shouldn't they be wanting the challange that is the ps3? That way if they make a truly effing epic master peice, they would feel more accomplished? Since when is taking the easy/familiar toute more accomplishing than the harder?

You want the best console ever? Wait til the companies come together and make 1 mega console. Tell me that wouldn't be sweet

Devs appearently arent in the biz to make masterpieces for the accomplishment factor. (Well I would say most, minus the devs who create exclusive game) They want the money.

Of course he said that otherwise ten million 13 year olds would spam him to death with nerd raging comments & he knows that rage will sell better on 360 anyway because microsoft has about 3 dev studios and exclusives are few and far between.

Best console ever : PS1
Resident evil and tombraider made me forget about the 16bit era back in 1996.
Watching those heads pop from shotgun fire sealed it 4 me.

Yep, two of my favorites from that era. I remember picking up resident evil before any reviews came out. I had been following it since it was called Biohazard in Japan. Lost many hours to that game getting the multiple endings.

I also love being able to say that I was playing Resident Evil before it was cool! lol, my one hipster moment.

yeah bear i first saw RE on a demo disc that came with a PS magazine,it was a rolling demo of chris running around the mansion BUT chris killed a zombie by popping its eyes out with his fingers...it was censored but the little black censored boxes fell & rolled on the floor which gave it away....they should of kept it in the final version minus the censor boxes....Cool eh!

My favourite FMV was the hunter coming out of the sewers,through the gardens & into the mansion.I remember playing TR and found a hole in the wall that had nice green trees and plants which looked all out of place in a cave...running around in this lovely paradise i was suddenly attacked by two dinosaurs...a few somersaults and a lot of bullets later and they where down,i instinctively looked down at the dead animals and noticed a very large footprint i was standing in...i thought to myself 'oh no i gonna die.

Yep, that one was also a heart stopper. But I must say, to me the earlier ones were scarier just because I had never play a scary game before. The dog that jumps in through the window almost made me stop playing LOL
Oh Man, the PS1 was just so much fun, so many games and so many new experiences...
Tomb Raider was for me on the PS1 what Uncharted is for me on the PS3. The levels on that game were huge and amazing, I don't think anything had been done on that scale before in any console.

"Tyrion King!" Gotta love the little guy, my favorite character by far.

we know carmack is not a big fan of the ps3. his complaints about the ps3 have been extensive. weak rsx, asymetric cpu, partitioned memory, sony's weak software tools, memory contraints becuase sony's operating system having a larger footprint...finally throw in blue ray latency issues.

the only thing i will say is it's damaging to have a guy like carmack speaking that way about the ps3. id has a pretty dedicated following and they listen to what carmack says. i'm sure these fans will be opting for the 360 version.

i would have to say the ps2 was the best console ever. i miss those days when sony ruled the world so to speak.

well said. id's comments last week when downplaying the sewers were just flat out disgusting, they think their idea of locking out content in a sp game is "cool". in one sentence they were patting themselves on the back for coming up with this. then, in the next sentence they were back pedaling and trying to downplay it. flat out disgusting.

Yeah, I think he's speaking from a developer stand point of values. He supported his claim with evidence that is very development centric. As for the best ever claim. Looking at it from capabilities, processing and developer support, I 100% agree the Ps3 and 360 are the "best" consoles ever.

Carmacks comments aside, because really, the current gen of systems are more capable than any gen from before, but my favorite system, based entirely on inferences relative to my experience and emotional position at the time, I'd say is the PSX.

Reflecting on that era, it was the unsuspecting champ. It was Sony's bold entry into gaming. They delivered a very dev friendly platform at competitive pricing, both hardware and software wise. They saw a huge number of piblishers grow into the leaders of gaming entertainment and set so many genre types into full fledged mainstream entertainment. I see the Playstation as the beginning of video gaming culture breaking the child-like mold and penetrating a more massive audience. This success carried right into the PS2.

Its just one dev stating his opinion, everyone has one of those and not everyone will agree to it. I think the ps2 is the best console ever with dreamcast coming in second and super Nintendo third. I do think him saying 360 is the best console cause its easy to dev for and doesn't take that extra work day to program for. Most people on here and other sites know the ps3 exclusives are the best for reason. The devs teams for Sony Nd,GG,Sucker Punch, Insomniac(mulitiplate now but exclusives is what im talking about)Put that extra work day that other devs wont do on ps3. In the end that hard work pays off and massive ways with a great game.

As a developer it's no surprize he made those comments. It's no secret that on Xbox you get more work done in less time and effort while on PS3 you get less work done.

My personal opinion is that the SNES was the best console ever. Now, if modding enters the picture, the original Xbox is the best console ever, on top of the Xbox games I could play on my HDTV loads and loads of emulated games from prior consoles. Sweet.

Next we see Carmack once again open his mouth without thinking to say the X360, the most unreliable system with 2 exclusives is the best console.
I have low hopes for Rage on the PS3. However, I will never know since Rage has been removed from my must get list.

Not only is he a PC dev, but there's been some kind of early DLC deal between MS and Bethesda, so of course Bethesda associates will talk up the 360. In developmental terms, by all accounts, he's right. But from a gamer's perspective, it's harder to determine, but I know which horse I'm backing.

I love my PS3, but I still view the PS2 as the very best system ever. Metal Gear, God of War, Team ICO... that system had it all.

As for the 360 being the best system ever, let me give one reason to why it's not: I worked at Future Shop for several years as a shipper/receiver/merchandiser and I was in charge of sending out all defective product. After the release of this generation's consoles, I would send out approximately 2 defective Wii's and 4 to 5 defective PS3's a week. I would send out anywhere from 15 to 25 Xbox 360's per week. So please, Carmack, explain to me how the most defective console I've ever known of is the best console ever. I'm dying to know.

Yeah, the SNES was probably my favorite as well. Super Metroid is my favorite SNES game of all time. I don't have a SNES anymore but I do have all my favorite SNES games on my Wii VC. I guess that's the only thing other than SM and Zelda that my Wii is good for.

I still have my SNES but it's not conected because the RF signal is broken. It displays the picture in black and white. WTF?!!! I wonder if it will work correctly if I use the other output method (S cable?.

But I do have it conected via Xbox 1 with, I think, 2000+ games. Hehehe. Gotta love the original Xbox (See my other post above).

@Ignitus: Check under the snes to see which is his color system. If your tv doesn't detect the color system automatically you'll have to change it manually. (Thou it's kind of weird nowadays)

The PLayStation 2 is the best console ever. If you say other wise then you haven't been a gamer long enough and by that you shouldn't even be able to say anything.
The second best is the PS3.. I guess the 360 would have to be in the top 5 tho because of its new tech and what not. But no way, is it even in the top 3.

Does the 360 have anything that the PS3 doesnt or does better.. I can't think of anything but cross chat. I don't care for it but I see Sony fixing that soon enough.
Power and graphic/ game performance it is the PS3 for #1.

I agree with you, Ben. The best games I've played have been for SNES, PS1, and PS2 (But you forgot GBA! Ridiculously huge game library there).

The Xbox 360 and PS3 are both good consoles - of course I prefer the PS3 - but I don't think they're as "great" or as important as the SNES or PS1 in terms of what they did for the industry or how they changed the way games are made.

Well I own all 3 consoles and Ps3 and 360 are tied for me. They both have great games. Either way I have the best of both worlds.

The 360 just doesn't have the same quality of games as the PS3. And the PS3 has blu ray support which to me is huge.

But neither one are the BEST console ever. I think the PS1, PS2 and PS3 are definitely in the convo as are the NES, SNES and 64. While I like X Box, they just don't have the same great exclusive games as those systems. There are great exclusives on 360, but there aren't a lot of them, and they aren't diverse.

This isn't about the games, It's about the development of the games. I have read many times over from many developers, the 360 is (or at least was), much easier to develop for then the Ps3. Reason for all the 360 to Ps3 ports back in the day.

The Xbox 360 is far from the greatest console ever. A poorly-constructed, piracy-ridden money pit that only is popular because pimply-faced teenage boys and people inflicted with stupidity bow down to peer pressure and buy 7 of them.

The PS3 is not #2, either, but it's ahead of the 360, too.

The ColecoVision, Super Nintendo, Atari 2600, NES, PS2, Sega Dreamcast and the original Xbox are all better than the Xbox 360.

i dunno if id call it the most unreliable system.
in fact a few years ago when i was running my own repair shop i only got a few 360s in for repairs, but i was overflowing with ps2s!
hell, ive got about 200 ps1s down in the basement with faulty lasers.......

from a engineers standpoint, which people are forgetting hes a programmer, hell the best programmer who ever lived!
so from that side of things i can see where hes coming from, $ony just dont give out the support M$ does.
theres a reason why your constantly seeing developers praise the 360s dev tools, but then curses $onys.
anyone remember what vergil had to say on the matter when GI did the opening for darksiders 2?
which is really pathetic really, the ps3 is the one which strays away from the norm, so if anything its the one which should have the best tools because its the most different!
its like going to a english speaking developer and start talking to them in japanese.
there not going to know what the ^%$# your on about!
yea they could go and learn japanese, but thats not the point.
there job is to make games, not waste half there time learning new architectures!

so from a developers standpoint hes right, but from a consumers standpoint well........
ill take a ps1 over any console and day of the week!
shame all the ones i own are not functional........
in fact finding a working ps1 is like trying to find a sober Irishmen!

PS2 was the first, FIRST, console to take gaming truly mainstream to the now Wii crowd with Singstar, Buzz, Eyetoy and Guitar Hero.

PS2 was home to hardcore shooters, platformers, action adventure games, racers and especially RPG's!!

PS2 was fully backwards compatible with PSone games.

PS3 was the first machine made that could literally do EVERYTHING!!! (even play PS2 games at first!) Free online, better graphics, Blu-ray, media streaming, music and video storage, internet browsing, EVERYTHING!!.... but make you a sandwich. :P

SNES had the best RPG's and Mario, AND introduced the world to Mario Kart and 3D shooting with Star Fox.

N64 had Goldeneye, Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of Time and 4 player multiplayer.

360 had red rings and Halo, but pioneered online gaming on consoles, hence why it is so popular today! (Peer pressure to join your friends online)

Carmack's choice is a typical PC developer's choice of console. Go with MS and the console that most resembles a PC. What's the bet MS' $$$$$ had something to do with that decision, and PS3's dedicated fans had something to do with him clearing the statement up.

Look, I'm just gonna come out and say this because there's something bugging me about this discussion. Folks, Carmack is a talented guy. His work with iD Software on games like Doom is legend. That's not because his programming is specifically awesome, but because the game was genre defining. It wasn't the coding that made the game design of Doom such a winner. The programming was a *huge* element in the success of Doom, because it played like fine silk. The game did things that few other games were doing. But, compared to the monolithic monsters of today, the code base for Doom is tiny.

That's not my point though, that's just setting the context for saying that John Carmack is a great PC game developer - he really is. But, he is not the greatest programmer of all time, or in the world today, or yesterday or last year, or last decade... Nor is John Carmack the world's authority on what is, and is not a great software environment. His view is his view, and if I was looking for a recommendation, he's a voice I'd listen to, but he's not the world authority on what is/is not the best. Nor is John Carmack a world authority on computer hardware. He knows a lot, he knows his stuff and he certainly knows a thing or two about graphics hardware and programming physics. But you know what, that doesn't make him a hardware expert.

Does his opinion carry any weight? Sure it does. But I see many posters here treating his word as law, as if somehow the tech God has spoken and thus the law is... No. Sorry, just no. That's not the case at all. Nor is it even the full context of his comments. But, the thing I am really annoyed by is the near superstitious faith in Carmack the mighty and his opinions. I have the same healthy skepticism of any of the leading lights of the industry. All their views matter, but none of them really speaks from anything other then their point of view. However the point is, none of them deserve blind faith or adulation.

I wish we could get people to stop this almost unconscious deification of individuals in the industry, and instead, get them to think for themselves.

He said 360 is better because its easier to develop. Can sony make it easier to develop on ps3?If they do maybe it will get more japanese developers who develop only on ds, wii, or psp on ps3.

Doesn't matter. There are those, like me, that are loyal to Sony and will remain so. Then there are those that are loyal to other stuff. Perhaps even just against Sony for whatever reason. Maybe they were beaten with a PSone controller as a youngster - I don't know. Either way, this "best console" crap is ridiculous. As far as I'm concerned: Pick your console, game, and be happy.

hey,any gameplay footage on the ps3 yet by the acclaimed programming master?

as much as I respect John , I still haven't seen any PS3 footage which makes me believe those 60 frames per second are a myth by word off him.

I would also have a hard time saying which one is the best but one thing for sure , the 360 is not the best , just like the ps3( unless we are talking about raw power).

I would even say that it goes beyond opinions .

I don't think we can measure the current systems greatness until they are done with and we've moved to the next gen. I do know i have friends who have switched from 360 to ps3 and have never regretted it. You gotta differentiate between the way we are rating them as well. You have to rate them on specs alone and then do a totally separate rating on the games they offer. I don't think you should mix the two. Sometimes I wonder of what certain multi-platform games would look like if they were created just for the strengths of each system(like madden, nhl, Cod, and others) Then which system would outshine the other?

Vita as a good chance of becoming the greatest ever... meh 360 and PS3 are a bit disappointing IMO, so I hope the next consoles are better..and of course Wii U.. I really hope Nintendo learn to make a bloody download list if I get a new Wii U or 3DS. (Colour etc etc)
