Sony Announces Global PS3 Price Cut

Many expected it would happen.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has announced a global price cut for the PlayStation 3:

The unit that comes with a 160GB hard drive, which currently holds a retail cost of $299, will soon drop in price to $249. The 320GB model will also receive the same $50 price cut; falling from $349 to $299. All new prices for North America and European/PAL territories will go into effect on August 18.

With cumulative worldwide sales reaching 50 million as of March 29, 2011, and featuring an exclusive software lineup that is second to none, the PS3 has proven its worth. Blu-Ray, 3D, PlayStation Move, the ever-expanding PlayStation Network; it's all part of the package and now, with over 60,000 games and video content on the PSN and a grand total of 2,495 titles available, the system is more attractive than ever.

And of course, with the release of several more hot exclusives in the future, including Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Resistance 3, most any hardcore gamer needs a PS3 at home. Back in 2006, when the system first launched, things were just a little different...in all honesty, I never would've purchased one if it hadn't been required for work. But now, things have changed. A lot.

Finally, we would like to add the reaction of EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich:

"We are pleased to see the PlayStation 3 increase its value to consumers by reducing the price of the PlayStation 3 hardware from $299 to $249 (with comparable reductions in other regions). It is no secret that the PlayStation 3 has been struggling for some time against the Microsoft Xbox 360 in North America (but slightly outperforming in Europe) and this price reduction will undeniably increase hardware and software sales of the PlayStation 3 in all regions, both in the short and long-term.

We can only imagine that third-party publishers and retailers are excited by Sony’s announcement as it lowers the barrier of entry to consumers before the crucial holiday season."

Nice, although we've seen Sony clearing the channel for a little while now, so this was well predicted...

Either way, it's great news for PS3 and brings the console within reach of even more consumers at a time when it has a stellar game library and HDTVs in the 20-odd inch range are reaching commodity pricing. Excellent.

yes i think the ps4 is coming sooner than we think. i'm sure sony has been hard at work on the ps4 and is ready to meet ms head on as soon they announce. 2013 feels about right.

Beam, I think the price drop is more reactionary to being outsold now 7 months in a row by the 360, rather than the PS4 looming. Sony needs to get some of their traction back that hey had when they introduced the Slim. Motion control games didn't do it (where is Sorcery?) and now they will try the old trusty price drop trick.

I think the price cut was expected for a long time now, it's 2 years since it fell to $299.99. So it's unsurprising that they can shave $50 off the price after two more years of improved manufacturing efficiency and lower component costs. I'm sure that SCEA would be delighted if this cut results in higher unit sales, as would Sony as a whole, but I don't think it's a reaction to the US market, nor do I think it's reflective of the PS4 coming in 2012. I think it's part of the long term strategy of selling millions more PS3s this year and next and the year after that and so on. I still think that 2012 is Vita's year and 2013 will belong to the PS4.

I'm not sure, but I think this may be the last but one price cut the PS3 ever sees. I said a few months ago that $249.99 is doable, and here we are. As I said before, I don't expect the price to ever drop below $200 while the PS3 is alone in the market. Is Sony can get RSX and Cell on a single chip that runs cool without a big heatsink/fan, I think we'll see that price barrier broken, but that will come when the PS3 enters the stage of life that the PS2 entered when PS3 launched.

No need for PS4 yet. At this point Sony could do a major firmware upgrade introducing advanced features with a refresh of the XMB interface and or the PlayStation Store and consider it the PS3.5 Experience.

Originally I felt 2014 was the right year for Sony and the PS4, but I increasingly believe that they'll go in 2013.

Announced for Holiday 2013 at either E3 2012 or TGS 2012, actual launch November 2013.

Great news. I just ordered my 3rd PS3 thanks to the pricecut. Be aware that Sony is offering a limited Infamous2 bundle so if you're like me and don't have that game yet I suggest getting it. I purchased mine from Amazon(of course) but BestBuy and Walmart are offering it too and I'm sure other stores too.

Oh and btw the Infamous2 bundle is $300 and comes with the 320gig HD.

I have an original 60gig, a 120gig slim I got back in August of 09 and now I'm getting the Infamous2 bundle since the price is right. One of my DS3 is acting up, it won't work unless plugged in via USB cable and I've tried everything to fix the issue.

I figured Infamous new is still around $50 and a new DS3 is $40 so I'd be getting a PS3 with a 320gig HD for only $200. I'm going to give my parents the slim from 09 so they can use Netflix and the Blu-ray.

I have a habit of buying several versions of the same console during its lifetime.

I too have just ordered my 3rd...however, I will be adding this to my vehicle. I have one I purchased last year (slim) in the den and one (Fatboy - Day 1 purchase) in the bedroom. now with the new price drop, I don't feel so bad adding one to the Tundra to replace the PS2 :)

Was that DS3 bought over the internet? I once bought two over the net and subsequently a firmware update rendered them useless unless plugged in. It took serious scrutiny to discover they were high quality knock offs, disabled with the FW update. And we did just get one.

Hell, even the boxes they came in were quality knock offs.

Hey don't forget that your can do video chats with your parents when you give them the PS3. I gave PS3 to my parents and some of my family followed suit. Were use the feature now and again. It cool when relatives are far.

this is great news, and will definitely boost ps3 sales. i wonder how much of a spike in sales we will see, the last time there was a pretty significant jump in sales. this is a smaller price cut but i have no doubt it will have an impact.

Excellent, and perfect timing too. I'm about due for a new PS3 as well. Unfortunately, not because I'm a collector, I just have really bad luck. My launch 60Gb bit the dust after 2 years, and my Slim is no longer reading bluray movies, it just freezes up. I'll probably give it to my mother in law for Netflix. I was holding out for the impending price cut, and I'm glad it's here!

I had the same problem with blu ray movies and I searched for the solution by googling it, but only visited the official playstation site for the answer. If it plays blu ray games it should play the movies too and the problem may just be a menu setting. I think I had to disable the media server, but I'm not 100% sure.

Microsoft is gong to reduce the price of the 360 now, I can almost guarantee it. The last time Sony lowed the price of the PS3, they still were not making profit at that time, then Microsoft went and lowered the price of the 360 proving that they could have done it at any time, but were worrying about their profit over the best interest of their customers. Im sure Microsoft is making a ton of profit from the 360, and are probably going to try to bring the price of the 4gb down to $99, and the 250gb to $199. Microsoft does not do a price cut because they think its what the consumers could use, they do it to try to out do Sony.

I was not bashing MS, I was simply stating that I predict MS is going to lower the price of the 360 since they don't want their console to be more expensive than the competitor. I was just making the point that it really annoys me that MS didn't cut prices last time just to make their console more affordable and to get more units sold, they did it because that's what their competitor did.
I will be the fist to say that though I prefer PS3 I still think the 360 is a great console. I didn't make that comment to bash the 360 or Microsoft, I was simply stating my prediction. What I will say about MS is that they wont just let people choose the 360 because they like it better, they have to make people want it because it is cheap and they have the money to get what they want from developers. They act like the 360 gets exclusive DLC because the developers like it better, when in reality it's because of the insane amount of money MS dishes out. At least Sony does their own thing and let consumers pick their product because they truly think it's better. Exclusive developers that choose the PS3, choose it because they think it has the power to make their game the best it can be, not because Sony has money to persuade them to choose the PS3. All I am saying is I have WAY more respect for Sony then I do for Microsoft. Yes this post is bashing Microsoft.

2 there really pushing kinect, almost every bundle comes with it so it would be hard for them to cut the cost of it already.

*who cares* ;) I ain't buying no more Microsoft machines unless the new Xbox 2 comes out (and that's a HUGE maybe). I can keep my current 360 off bc there is absolutely no reason to turn it on...not one game I want to play on it. Let them do a price drop...Plus, I don't see why anyone would pay $50 less for a sub-par machine like the 360...its like getting a bluray player for $50. :)

Funny story about "assistants". My youngest is 2. He is very well mannered. Always telling you please and thank you. Well, when he says thank you, it sounds EXACTLY like f*ck you. So, my son, trying his best to be respectable by telling everybody thank you, is in reality saying f*ck you. Nothing like feeding my son his dinner, and him saying "f*ck you Dadda".
We went through the drive through the other day, and the service was rather poor, and slow. When finished, I rolled my son’s window down, and said "ok, tell the nice lady thank you!".

I think they are taking the opportunity of the lack of Vita to push the PS3 user base up. Maybe those people will realize Sony rocks and then get a Vita when it comes out since the two are complementary systems.

A new Xbox or PlayStation shouldn't come out until at least 2015, both consoles are still good, still improving, still getting great exclusives, still getting more features, there's NO NEED.

It's about time Sony did a price drop, although it should have been a $100 price drop or at least release a sub 160GB PS3 for $199.99.

There are those who believe that Sony should lower the price of the Vita. It is worth the price but who wouldn't want anything for less? I'm getting this Devious Device regardless!

I would not be surprised if Sony is test running the Vita in Japan. By the time it hits the states they could lower the price so it would hit hard at launch. This would also create an small market for import which pumps money right into the Japanese economy. I will be contributing to this personally as soon as it can be pre-ordered from Japan.

I have 3 PS3s. Bedroom, Living Room and Game Room. Which is why I have always advocated to Sony to allow them to communicate somehow. Now that would be a great new feature to implement. Get to it Sony!

Great news on the price drop! Its good for everyone. I have a Day 1 60GB fat boy PS3 and this monster keeps on ticking. I haven't had a problem yet. I recently upgraded the hard drive to 650GB, so I don't have to mess with space. If you need disk space just go that route, its cheaper and easy to install(youtube). Backing up the hard drive can be a problem to some. You will have to reformat an external hard drive to a FAT32 system. I recommend swissknife for reformatting.
