Sony: PS3 Price Cut Will Attract Xbox 360 And Wii Gamers

As you all know by now, the PlayStation 3 will soon fall in price; the worldwide price cut was announced during GamesCom 2011.

Now, Sony has reflected on the move to drop the cost of the 160GB and 320GB PS3 models by $50. Sony director of hardware marketing, John Koller, told IGN that the "time was right" and the company expects to gain "a lot of traction." Koller also confirmed that even with the price cut, the system will remain profitable, and it takes a lot of time for such price drops to come about. In fact, Sony has had this move in mind "for over a year."

And of course, Sony hopes to attract more gamers with the cheaper console:

"We're opening our arms for the Xbox 360 and Wii owners to come over. There's a real opportunity for those consumers to be able to play, what we view, are the best games in the industry on the PS3 this fall.

There's a significant number of Xbox 360 and Wii owners who would like that second console and want to have the opportunity to play these exclusive games and content experiences, and this new price point allows them to do that."

As we head into the fall and holiday season, having the cheapest PS3 price possible (while still being profitable) is undoubtedly the best decision Sony could've made. Given the games showing up, how can you afford to pass on the PS3 for much longer...? We're talking to you, Xbox 360 and Wii players.

Kids do this thing, called growing up. A 12 year old who got a Wii 5 years or so ago is pushing 17 now. So let's not speak ill of potential PS3 gamers...

thats exsactly where a pricecut counts
you fink these cids buy their own consoles
no, their parents, uncles, caretakers, dogs buy it for them
now they can make their parents buy them a ps3 for lbp, rachet and clark and stuff
while their parents hawe a 3d bd plaer and a movie streaming device

I know most people will disagree with me, but I just keep staring at the price, going, so I could buy a PS3 or Vita...why the hell would I buy Vita? I mean of course I'll be buying vita, I already have 2 ps3's (one collecting dust while being dead and one playing one of my greatest game collections) but it's just something that goes through my mind. I know Vita is perfectly priced, it's just when people, namely parents or so, look at this go and go, buy this or this, they'd probably go with what the imagine is the greater product. Though then again maybe I'm wrong..look at the DS (not 3DS of course, I mean..LOL look at it)

I think the underlying business model is to make the consumer who has neither wind up with both due to how the Vita and PS3 will interact with each other.

@ World, Didn't think of that. True they both interact together, but that only depends on how well they make games that work with it.

@Cesar, Ok? If you want me to go around and listen to music then why the hell would I spend 250$ (the cheaper model I remind you, the 299$ is still the only one with 3g) and not just buy an ipod? 'all that stuff vita does', I'm assuming you mean play video games. Well I hate to say it but when I go somewhere, it means I'm driving to a place, can't really play games then. When I get somewhere, I'm generally buying something, shopping, working, at an appointment, can't really play games during then. And other than that, I'm at home, so why the hell would I play a portable game at home?

@Neo, True, but the ps3 will be selling less than the vita also (the 3G model). But that's entirely different, the Wii isn't much of a 'console'. But I'm not getting into that. Also you have to remember, most of the ds/3ds(lol) market comes from parents buying it for their kids, so they CAN play it out of the house, they don't do much when they're taken places. I know, I see it at my job all the time.

In that case why make the argument "why do I want to buy a handheld device that costs the same as a console?". Handheld market is targeted to the people who will could actually use the device. The reason for the price is the same as with laptops, you're only paying for the "luxury" of carrying it around with you everywhere. Which in this case it doesn't apply because you don't game anywhere else but in your house.

5 year old console vs state of the art handheld, and you wonder why the price is similar? Come on, you know better, and so do most consumers. Decades of ever shorter product lives and ever advancing tech that costs more at the start and get's cheaper over the years have educated consumers on this issue.

Agree with this comment 4 up, 1 down Disagree with this comment

LegendaryWolfeh

I wouldn't say the consumers are educated at all, I could talk to a majority of my older family members (30+) and they would have almost no idea how to use computers or smartphones with any skill. So no, I don't think the consumers are educated, I think they just see or are told 'Oh this has the newest and best stuff' and buy it just because of that. And true, a 5 year old console vs a new handheld is a pretty rough comparison I admit, but it just seems like the 5 year old console is definitely better than the handheld, WHICH I am getting.

And Cesar, I made the argument because you said "Well if you can take your ps3, and i mean just your ps3 no portable tv, around and play everywhere and listen to music and all that stuff vita does then by all means go ahead and buy the ps3" 1. I already have 2 ps3's so I don't need another. and 2. Honestly, the only reason I'm interested in Vita at all is because of the few times AR ever gets mentioned so hopefully it'll have a bit implemented.

@Highlander, actually I wanted to see if you knew, but has Sony or anyone mentioned if the Vita will be tetherable to their current services? I haven't noticed of any articles or statements about it...and I really don't care for ATT for 3G.

Also on a side note, I did suddenly forget about the mobile market. So yes people definitely are used to buying expensive portable products (even if they don't really know what the hell they're buying) though I really hate putting mobile and handheld game systems in the same category as one is specialized while one isn't. I know I'll definitely be buying a new Droid in the next year or so, probably wait it out for a Droid 4, because I can only bet they'll market it as Droid..4G or something like that, since the Droid 3 didn't have 4g lol

So, is this price drop concurrent with the new lighter model, that's been reported at many places? There may have been some subtle revisions in that model, which cause the PS3 to be still profitable at $250.

P.S.(off-topic): My PS3 doesn't play Inception DVD, which is strange since it plays everything else, and the DVD is not out of region. In my country(India), Sony doesn't repair PS3 consoles, but rather replaces them, if we bring faulty ones in their warranty period. So, should I try persuading them to replace mine, and will they replace due to such a small problem? I was thinking of claiming warranty over this when the newer model comes. My PS3 is in warranty till November.

Funny thing is, being the cheapest console is the only strategy the 360 has left, cos it certainly isn't a quality console and there's hardly any good games coming out for it. (Gears 3, Forza 4 and Halo 4 are the ONLY exceptions)

Kinect helped, but it's more trying to tap the Wii market than the hardcore gaming crowd.

i'm not so convinced ms will react to sony's price drop immediately. the ps3 has been struggling lately against the 360. some months sales have been nearly double that of the ps3 here in na. i'm not entirely sure a $50 price cut by sony really puts a lot of pressure on ms. they may just ride it out and hold off the price cut for a more strategicly advantageous time like around the hoilidays.

Dancemachine, in the US MS has been running a campaign where anyone buying a Dell PC can get an Xbox360 (arcade presumably) for free. They've been targeting college kids and suggesting that they should do that rather than go with necessities like a fridge. Either way giving away 360s like Happy Meal toys is a marketing strategy for MS now.

Wow, really? MS has always been good at effectively marketing and giving away their wares, even if they are poorer quality than the competition's.

Sony needs to do another "free PS3 with this TV!!" deal to get people in again. Or do a 2 game bundle pack for the same price as the console alone. (Resistance 3 and Infamous 2, perhaps?)

The PS3 price cut is excellent for those still on the fence or waiting to save money, the exclusives alone are worthy of a purchase, not to mention a quality blu-ray player and free online gaming.

Only thing holding some 360 players back is lack of party chat and lack of Halo. That, and many people prefer the left and right triggers on the 360 controller over the L2 / R2 triggers. Their words, not mine.

Some of my friends still play 360 constantly and rarely touch their PS3's, all cos of online shooters dominating the 360 and social gaming right now. They all prefer to play the same 3 or 4 games (Halo Reach, Gears 2, Black Ops and Bad Company 2) rather than try something new with LBP2, GT5, Infamous 2's mission creator, Motorstorm, Killzone and Resistance.

After playing Killzone 3 online a few months back, my friends hated PSN, lack of party or X-game chat and were so used to CoD that they couldn't accept Killzone for what it was... different, but excellent!!

360 gamers won't budge. They're a stubborn lot who dream of 100% headshots and 1000/1 kill death ratios every night. They all believe Halo is king and CoD is only playable on Live. They burn through their parents hard-earned money paying for Xbox Live and label anything different from those 2 main shooters as "crap".

Wii owners over 12 years old on the other hand...

Even funnier is that they mistake quality over quantity. They believe that just cos they get less exclusives, the exclusives they do get are better.

Oh how I laugh when I'm busy playing LBP 2, Modnation Racers, MGS 4, Infamous 2, Killzone 3, Resistance 2, GT 5, Demon's Souls and (soon) ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD.

Darn right Excelsior!!!

I was so incredibly anti-Xbox up until 2009, when peer pressure of playing with friends made me finally give up my morals and get a 360 to sit aside my trusty PS3.

Gears 2, Halo 3, DOA 4, Forza 3, CoD Black Ops, all the games my friends played!!!

I got a few friends convinced that PS3 rocks too when I showed them Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, MGS 4 and Uncharted 2. (Especially Uncharted 2!!) Many of them became convinced that once it was cheap enough, they'd get a PS3 for it's great exclusives.

But 360 remains to this day the go to machine for all multiplayer gaming needs.

I said it before and I'll say it again, MS' decision to include a wired headset and Party Chat / X-game chat with Live Gold was a stroke of genius!!! They pioneered social gaming and online gaming!!! (If only their hardware and software was up to scratch)

Just goes to show ya what people are willing to sacrifice just to play with friends. Sad really.

I think that both systems' line up this fall is pretty strong. Don't know why you'd be laughing at other people while you play your PS3 games. That seems odd.

September I'll be busy with Gears 3 and Ico Collection. I was hoping October would be Rage and Twisted Metal, but I'll have to settle for just Rage now. Then November is Halo HD and Uncharted 3! Boom!

I've been considering buying another PS3 now that my disc space is almost running out (71/74GB used) and for the fact that the slim downloads faster and runs more quietly and with less heat. Yet, even with this price cut, I doubt that I'll get another one. I'm betting that this one will tie me over (because I can wipe some of the to-be unused game data) until the PS4 arrives.
My poor 360, on the other hand, has served me well, but I rarely use it. So I wouldn't even consider another one of those--though I would if I didn't have the wifi add-on (damn Microsoft being behind the times there).

Agreed Underdog, a new HDD is the way to go.

Only thing is, make sure that you backup your game saves and anything else that you cannot simply re-download. If you decide to let the PS3 do a backup of itself, my advice is two fold, 1) make sure you're prepared for the time it takes, and 2) remove any music files, images or video that you can easily put back from another source, it takes *forever* to backup GBs and GBs of data. Also, delete the game installs that your games on BluRay perform. Those are easily replaced from the game disc, but take a long time to backup.

When you replace the HDD, do the backup first, make a separate copy of your game saves, but the copy protected ones will only be protected by the process of doing the backup - unless you're a PlayStation Plus member in which case you upload them to your cloud based save storage.

Before you actually do the HDD upgrade or backups, sync your trophies and make sure your firmware is up to date. Do not allow the PS3 to attempt a firmware update while changing the HDD as you can brick the system. When you remove the old HDD, keep it safe for a while just in case there's a problem.

Once you install the new HDD, it will reformat itself and the system will start. You have the option then of restoring your system from the backup you made (if you made one), or simply re-make your local accounts and associate them with the correct PSN accounts, and you're done, except of course from copying back your saves, pictures, music, video, etc, and downloading anything that wasn't backed up or copied locally.

Keep that old HDD for at least a few weeks, just in case you have a problem, at least then you can simply put that drive back into the system. Be aware though that if you upgrade your HDD, and keep the old one just in case, if you update your system firmware beyond the version on the old HDD, it will mean that if you use that old HDD in the PS3 again, it will reformat the drive.

I think the price cut helps more in the long run, the PS3 will probably out last the 360 (its basically out lasted the Wii), and if that's the case, the PS3 will be much more inexpensive compared to the Xbox 720 & the Wii U. Imo, the reason the 360 has out performed the ps3 in sales up to this point is not because of Live (since the numbers show not every 360 owner has Live), but because of the price. I think the average consumer looks at the two consoles and ask themselves "why should i pay $300 dollars for a PS3 to play COD or GTA when i only have to pay $200 for the Xbox to play them?" one could argue exclusives, but the majority of people care more about multiplatform games.

Just found out, the PS3 will be $150 AUD cheaper in Australia!! :D

160 GB model going from $499 to $349 AUD

320 GB model going from $599 to $449 AUD

The 160 GB model is now $50 CHEAPER than a 250GB 360 in Australia from 22nd August!!!

If MS don't respond soon, Sony are gonna have a bumber year this Christmas with PS3 console and game sales!!! Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, ICO / Shadow of the Colossus Collection and Twisted Metal and Last Guardian next year, along with a massive price cut on the console and every multiplat running as well if not better on the PS3 now!!!! Yes we do, Doom!!!

As Guillemot from Ubisoft said 2 months ago, the cash made from cheap and quick party games or casual games often help fund the big AAA hardcore titles. So all the Ubi Imagine games on DS generate big bucketloads of money from little girls who wanna play them, and some of that money goes towards Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell or Ghost Recon, therefore making them better games.

As far as I'm concerned, the more the merrier!! :)

Maybe... but I doubt it. Flipping the coin, the only way that I can ever see myself getting a 360 is when they go the PS2 route and drop it to $150 because there is almost nothing on the system to appeal to me.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels that way, and it's likely the same way that a lot of 360-only owners feel about the PS3 (though how they could, I'm sure I'll never know). As for the Wii, I don't think many people used it as a transition into true gaming so... yeah. Of course, more people will pick the system up, but not a huge number methinks. Let's wait for the NPD numbers for this month before celebrating too much.

@lawless

i agree. even when we do get the npd numbers we will have no way of knowing how many of these people own wii's and 360's also. i imagine that your average 360 fan is about as likely to run out and get a ps3 as we are get a 360. meaning, not very likely.

the wii's demograghic is so different i wonder about them as well.

maybe...but i doubt it is what i would say as well on this.

I'd rather buy a ps2 (my old one is in the hands of someone else now :( ) than buy a 360.. lol

Not a bad idea Wolfeh. I could do that, buy a new PS3 and retire my 60GB, and all that for HALF the price that I paid for it to begin with... It boggles the mind.

I see what ya mean guys, but 360 does have its benefits. Not many, but they are there.

Say you have many friends playing 360. Playing online with them, Party chatting, sharing videos, pics and other funny things mid game or while playing completely different games is pretty cool.

Halo Reach was the first Halo I'd ever had fun playing!! And would trophies had existed without achievements? Gears 2 is fun, even if the guys control like tanks, and Kinect is great for the kids at family gatherings at my place!!!

Sure, PS3 has more reliable hardware and more exclusive AAA titles than you can shake a stick at, but it's everything else other than that where MS is doing really well. Online gaming, casual integration with Kinect, online services such as Foxtel on 360 (in Australia), ESPN, voice recognition while using the machine with Kinect, all with the price of Live Gold!!

PSN is steadily catching up and has come a long, LONG way since 2006, but while MS has billions of dollars to throw around at binding legal contracts with popular services and products, Sony needs to shift strategy to get the 360 audience and a price cut should only be the beginning, not the ultimate solution.

@dancemachine

once again i agree with everything you said. you mention the social dynamic of the live experience again. it makes the 360 audience some the most dedicated fans i have ever come accross. it's cool to own a 360 and play with your friends. that is an area that sony needs to work on. it will be very difficult to penetrate that market. your average 360 fan could care less about the ps3's price ot its exclusives. i agree with you that a shift in strategy will be what's required. it will be tough.

i dont think so.
if all the content coming to the system was not enough for people to go out and grab one, i cant see 50 bucks making much of a difference!

Agreed, for a change there ____________

The $799 AUD price point was the biggest hurdle at first. $499 USD.

If $299 wasn't low enough to convert people from their Halo matches, then I'd rather them stay there glued to their 360's. Most of them are sqeaky 12-15 year olds with a big mouth and no common sense.

dunno about that, ive actually found allot more of those types on PSN then XBLA!
here the price drop will make a big difference because 150 bucks is allot of cash!
in EU and the states though, 50 is just too little to sway much.
they need to drop the price of the vita though, no way in hell people are going to spend 50 bucks more then a ps3 for one!

here is what eedar analyst jesse divinch had to say about the price cut:

"it is no secret that the ps3 has been struggling for some time against the microsoft xbox360 in north america(but slighly outperforming in europe) and this price reduction will undeniably increase software and hardware sales in all regions, both in the short and long term."

he expects a sales increase of up to 30-50% and thinks ms will wait to see how this pans out.
he said this move will boost confidence accross the industry.

wedbush analyst michael patcher also weighed in calling this a bold move by sony and expecting an increase in sales between 20-30%.

The problem with analysts is that their horizon is generally US centric. At least EEDAR recognizes that outside the NA market PS3 is selling strongly and outselling the 360 heavily due to the influence of markets like Asia. This pricing move could be aimed specifically at gaining more sales in NA, but I think it's more likely that it's simply a part of the long term strategy of the PS3 business. The PS2 now sells for 33% of the original launch price. When PS2 hit 40% of the launch price, that was the price point at which Sony brought us the PS3.

PS3's launch price was $599.99, this new price is approximately 40% of that original price. I think we'll see the PS4 launch while the PS3 is priced at $249. But much like the PS2, we'll see that launch happen when Sony are ready to drop the PS3 price one more time. That final price drop will take the PS3 to 33% of the original price to a retail price of $199.99. I personally expect that to happen in about 2 years, maybe as early as E3 2013, but certainly by GamesCom 2013. PS4 may be announced at E3 2012, or GamesCom 2012, but won't arrive in stores until 2013. That gives Sony two more years of selling the PS3 at this new, very attractive price, followed by the launch of the PS4, and the repositioning of the PS3 as the 'budget' console from Sony.

At least, that's why might happen if Sony's strategy holds true to what happened with PS1 and PS2.

This is good for everyone as ppl have to buget to get luxuries like these.

Wonder which is the best to get 160 or 320 ?
Cos I heard that there are different models like 'K' or something and some are more energy efficient than others.

A price cut is good news. My PS3 is still with a shot disc drive so I can't play any disc-based games so instead of fixing it, I can pay a little more and replace it. I'll get my first one fixed down the road but it would be nice to get a slimmer unit for my main gaming area.
