Ninja Theory On DMC: "We're Not Changing Our Plan"
When the Devil May Cry reboot showed up earlier this year, the fans weren't all that enthusiastic about Dante's new look.
We happened to mention that he looked like a heroin addict. Others had equally unpleasant things to say, and wished new series developer Ninja Theory had stuck with the accepted Dante design. This same sort of backlash prompted Sucker Punch to change Cole's new look for inFamous 2 but the DMC makers won't be swayed. During a presentation at GamesCom 2011, Ninja Theory boss Tameem Antoniades simply said- "We've got our plan and we're not changing it."
Producer Alex Jones reminded everyone that Capcom Japan is actually responsible for Dante's new design, and they've already had "dozens and dozens of meetings" concerning the character's new look. Antoniades added yet another controversial comment-
"The people who are skeptical secretly want to like it. And our job is to prove it's Devil May Cry in essence."
Well, that's interesting. We don't like it because we secretly want to like it? ...I suppose. We won't pass judgment until we see the game, of course, and maybe that new Dante will go over better than expected. Besides, when it comes to this franchise, it's all about the gameplay. Right?

Its not even about his changed looks. I for one think they should stick to their guns, no matter how horrible this dante looks. Maybe the final game will look much better, hopefully.

But that doesn't mean we will/should accept radical changes to the story and characters.
When a majority of the fanbase is calling BS on something, Its not just because they "secretly want to like your game"... It's because they are audible telling you what it is that is keeping them from actually liking it.

Exactly! In the original they even showed Dante and Vergil as little boys and they both had white hair. This is a reboot plain and simple with what seems like no demon powers whatsoever!
@world
Problem being is that Cole always wore that jacket so underneath he could have had those tattoos. About his hair I am assuming his molecular structure was changed but his hair could have grown.
With this Dante the fact that he doesn't act cocky or full of himself is a definite loss for me. The fighting has not changed so why change the character? Then they have gotten rid of Reuben Langdon who did both the voice for Dante and the mo-cap. Bring him back and I might reconsider.

As far as the new Dante being cocky, the original trailer that spanned out from him casually putting out his cigarette on a critter's head was a perfect glimpse that his attitude is intact.
And this Dante does get white hair when he freaks out.

and I agree so to certain extent.
@aaronisbla
"sorry bro, but that sounds like something someone would say when they are trying hard to defend a game... before even playing it. Gamers can and should be able to comment on a game's progress, even if they are skeptical of it all the way till its release."
What are you talking??? You didn't pay attention to what I said did you??? I'm not talking about the skeptics, hell I was somewhat skeptical myself in the very beginning, but I'm talking about the people who have convince themselves they're not buying or playing it NO MATTER WHAT, the people who aren't even willing to give the game a chance those are the people I'm addressing. That should have been obvious I know there are going to be skeptics with any game you completely missed my point. The point is what purpose does it serve to continue to follow the progress of a game you've already said you're gonna play it's waste of time even watching trailer or commenting on articles.

The thing is it's not like DMC was in a desperate situation, DMC4 was not that bad overall, while a bit empty it left the possibility of as sequel or prequel. But this is just unbearable. The worst thing about it is that this reboot makes most of the other DMC's redundant as the story has no conclusion so it just leads to nowhere.

people are hating on the game because it does not look like a DMC game!
people are worried yous are going to do to this what GRIN did to bionic commando, what crapcom did to DMC4, and RE5, and what $E did to FFXIII!
if you want to end up like GRIN, IE bankrupt with nothing but the destroyer of one of gamings greatest titles on your resume then by all means hack your brains out!
otherwise i suggest you get your head out of your a$$, and start listening to your fans.
not insulting them!
you dont want another enslaved on your hands, do you?

On to Enslaved, the multiplatform game which waas supposed to show how much better goingf mutliplatform was financially for a brave studio like NT and what did it manage? It pulled off decent acting, writing and good character progression but ZERO game. They forgot the gameplay FFS! Is THAT a studio YOU would entrust a gameplay heavy experience like the DMC series to? My issue hasn't ever been Twilight Dante but the worry that NT have never managed a full game by themselves or ever shown the propensity toward combo based demon slaying DMC needs.
Seriously, this studio has led a bloody charmed life so far(unlike the unlucky Grin who might have come up with the incredibly daft "Wife Arm" but aside from that were crippled by SE and Capcom not actually paying them for work done on time)and landing this game that they have ZERO reason to believe they even COULD make half decently let alone actually land the project underlines just HOW lucky.
I sense a car wreck. And that's without even considering just how crap all Capcom's recent story based games have been! If you don't hunt monsters or fight on streets or with superheroes it's been crap.

Also, we don't want DMC:devil may cry. We want Devil May cry 5. I want to know what happened to Vergil. Hell, if you see MVC3, they got Dante from the original series, a sign that they aren't really fond of this new Dante.
The fact is, they should have titled this a spinoff of DMC. It did not need to change, and this "get over it" attitude just reeks of arrogance, and i know they will fail.
They failed last year, and they will fail again. This will be worse than DMC2. Didn't Namco Bandai or whatever say after the flop of Enslaved that they are gonna focus on making their own games?
So yeah, Capcom must have really been desperate when they handed this away. People, vote with your wallet and do no buy this game, especially the hardcore. Then they will make DMC5.
Perhaps i am being too hard but, i am not even a hardcore fan and this new dante disgusts me. Not listening to the fanbase is never a good idea.

That being said, I've really enjoyed the work of Ninja Theory thus far, though I firmly believe that their best is yet to come. They've got the pacing and storytelling down pat, but can't seem to marry their stellar performance on those fronts with similarly impressive gameplay. That being said, I really am loving the look of DmC. The colour, the style, the combat and the subtle nods to the old series. The only thing that confuses me is that I'm still reading conflicting reports that it is a prequel to the old series, or a reboot. I want an answer. I actually read an interesting article some months on how the writer was posturing that it was set after DMC2 with Dante stuck in hell, while New Dante is his incarnation in the real world receiving messages and clues on how to set the real Dante free. It was quite interesting, and I'd love for that to be true.

this would be like making a star trek reboot and changing Spock to a Kligon (i know i spelled that wrong)..
if youre gonna make a reboot and dont wanna stick with the excepted character designs then just make awhole new story in the same setting but with a new character... kinda like Nero with DMC 4... all theyd have to do is change the new "Dantes" name to something else and we'd all be happy.

Ulitmately, though, I'd say the core audience should care most about how the game is designed and how it plays.
And maybe with time, that femme blond girl can be changed into uber awesomeness like in MGS4

It's not just about Dante is what you gotta understand. It's what they've done to a story that was never finished and left many loose ends untied. There was really no need for a reboot just yet with the series. It is what it is though. Although disappointed,I'll give it a chance..that's how we discover sleeper games anyway

The story was never really a good one to begin with it; it was always very mediocre or OK at best but never good or great; it was always a weak point of the franchise and Capcom doesn't have any really good writers. With every DMC game they would always raise more questions than answers, Capcom is terrible when it comes to doing to true sequels just look at SF4 which was set before the events of SF3. The only franchise I'd say they did alright with developing competent storylines in the sequels would have to be Onimusha, but they don't even seem to care about bringing that franchise back, if they did I suppose they would pass the project to a completely different studio.
With that being said I can't say that I'm disappointed that they're not continuing the sub-par storyline.
I'm only surprised that they decided to reboot.

Even if the story of Dmc is good, the gameplay has to be up to snuff, and judging by Heavenly Sword, i don' think it will be. Worst final boss on the ps3!

It's difficult to tie DMC 4 to the rest as it is, but there are visible connections. Also, I know we've only seen WIP gameplay but it doesn't feel like thstyle of the gameplay was being captured.
As a hardcore fan, they are right, I do want to like it, so it better still in be dmc in essence....
