Binary Domain: Yakuza Creator's New Project Dated
Japanese developers don't typically embrace the shooter genre, but expect an intriguing sci-fi blast-fest from Sega.
It's Binary Domain and it now has a North American release date: February 14. European gamers can grab it three days later, which is pretty standard.
Featuring a futuristic setting (Tokyo in the year 2080), we face a dire situation: humans are battling robots for ultimate supremacy, but there's a twist to the scenario: are the robots becoming more human or are the humans becoming more like robots? If you're wondering, this is the new brainchild from Toshihiro Nagoshi, who was also responsible for the solid and popular Yakuza series. Said Nagoshi:
"When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments, but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama. The keyword we have in mind for this project is 'Life.' I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp."
Nagoshi and Sega delivered quite a few entertaining Yakuza titles this generation, and we're obviously looking at a talented developer. But can they produce a great squad-based shooter? Furthermore, how will the Japanese gamers receive it? Obviously, this is another example of a Japanese publisher attempting to cater to Western tastes, but it has to compete in this crazy tough market... Let's hope for the best.

LOL, true!
But I tend to lump them into 3 basic lists
1. Must have list (ASAP)
2. Want list (want to play, but will wait a bit for good price drops)
3. Need list (won't play, but still need for collection purposes, as in cheap $10 & under bargain bin buys).
BUT.....
Now that I'm out of work, I've had to make brand new list....
1. Can't buy (all of the 3 prior lists above, so Saint's been a sad Panda lately)

I'm currently being mildly entertained by Platinum's Vanquish, a generic, clinical, robot-strewn game that has some of the good Japanese influence but is nearly ruined by its attempts at western-ness.
There are plenty of great western shooters already, the problem seems to be that Japanese developers have no clue what is happening in them that makes them successful. So they should stick to the great work that they already do with other things.
I, Robot, Terminator, The Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, I think we've seen this theme enough times.

In many ways it is a Western-styled shooter, but it also has a clear Eastern influence. Besides, I'd argue that people are sick of shooting people.

I just watched a trailer, it had me until that squad went in to handle the problem. Right there it looked like it was about to get generic.
