Square Enix Brings FFXIII-2, Mystery Project To PAX Prime

Following hot on the heels of GamesCom is the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX Prime), which kicks off this week.

And Square Enix has revealed their enticing lineup for the show. Several big-name titles will be playable, including the massively anticipated sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-2. Also on tap are Dead Island, Deus Ex: Human Revolution (which launches tomorrow), Heroes of Ruin (Nintendo 3DS), and Wakfu (MMORPG from Ankama Studios).

But that's not the interesting part. According to the press release, PAX attendees will be the first to hear Square Enix and Airtight Games announce a "top-secret joint project." The development team of this mystery title includes Creative Director Kim Swift, who is an ex-Valve staffer with Portal and both Left 4 Dead games to her name. All we know is the new project is "incredibly fascinating and quirky."

It'll be revealed on Saturday, August 27 at 7 p.m., so stay tuned. Square Enix has been really into supporting Western tastes this generation, so it's no surprise to see a one-time Valve member involved.

Kinda can't wait for ff13-2.

I'm enjoying the ff13 although I'm not far into it. But I explained that in the motion control topic when I gave my late pgu. So I'm not gonna do it again here.

Hopefully though this joint project will be something sweet.

Me too LV, but I'm lukewarm about Noel, and Snow really needs to stay closer to his woman. I hope there's more playtime as Lightning than there appears to be as well.

Sigh, it finally happened, square lost it, I mean we all knew they weren't doing ok lately but this is the nail in the coffin.
I don't mean to hate without even knowing what is this project but I don't want to go through another heartbreak......

Yes World,sometimes Versus feels like a dream, atm I feel is the next The Last Remnant PS3 version that for years SE said it was coming and later there was a phase of silence, and they still don't even claim it was canceled.

Of course people don't cared much because that game was awful.

I think more info on versus would come out during next years e3....on the Microsoft side. When they revealed that FF13 was being ported over to xbox, that was the highlight of their show...not to mention a slap in the face to the fans that bought a ps3 due to that exclusive game. I might pick it up now that it's only $20.

...so it's no surprise that gamers interested in JRPGs are looking to other sources.

Note, no versus, and no FFXIV. 5 years since release of the PS3, and SE is still twiddling it's thumbs instead of working for it's 'loyal' PlayStation customers.

I've played FF XIII and found the characters interesting. I am probably going to play XIII-2 but not until it hits the bargain bin. There are lots of great games coming out and those would tide me over until this game hits the $20 mark. The first game didn't take that long anyway.

I wonder how many copies this game would sell in Japan given the ridiculous amount of returns for the first game.

It makes me wonder if they panicked more about the number of copies returned for the first game or the amount of flack it generated from the West. Sure, both markets are important, but when your home crowd that is completely crazy for your flagship series suddenly are trading their copies back, you really have a very good reason to push that button.

Indeed. That said, Ben's correct when he says that if FFXIII had not been promoted as an FF game it would have sold well on it's production values and gameplay. It's simply not an FF game though.I wonder whether this discussion would be the same had they not pushed it as FFXIII, but as something else entirely instead.

It makes sense actually. People would have been more forgiving about it since they don't have anything to compare the game against with. If FF XIII was actually a non-FF game, fans would not have expected the things that eventually did not make the game. It would have been lauded for its excellent production values alone. We have to admit that FF XIII is a gorgeous-looking game (sans the blocky fingers).

Holy peepants Batman, of all the people to team up with... Valve? Is it going to happen? A Final Fantasy FPS?

When I read "quirky" I thought maybe it meant Japanese because they are quirky. But now I see that SE has become so westernized their vocabulary has gone bonkers too. I'm going to stay tuned because while I still want greatness I also love a good faceplant.

not super thrilled about the game, dark souls, last guardian, uncharted 3, WKC2, the ico/shadow HD combo, the MGS2/3/Peack walker HD combo are my dishes.

for SQUEEENIX, let them turn western, and let them sink, don't care much anymore....
