Voice Of Reason: Won't We Have Fun With BF3 And MW3?
I think we're all losing sight of what matters. This whole Battlefield 3 vs. Modern Warfare 3 mess has gotten ugly fast and to be honest, I think we're all avoiding the crux of the issue.
Now, I could've sworn that our industry was about entertainment. If that remains true, we should be looking at the potential fun factor of upcoming games, right? Quality is always a consideration but then again, most productions that suffer from low-quality elements aren't any fun. And if we focus on that little three-letter word, I'm wondering if most of the arguments wouldn't disappear... We should probably refocus.
Who cares which one is better than the other? Who cares which one sells more? And why is it suddenly EA vs. Activision? Call of Duty has become a popular scapegoat but is it really accurate to assume that MW3 will be a bad game? If we look at it from a logical standpoint, will shooter fans be disappointed with either BF3 or MW3? Granted, they may like one more than the other, but what are the chances that either title disappoints? Those who despise the genre won't like these games, but that's never going to change. Personal preferences do exist.
At the end of the day, I sincerely doubt that either title in question will be a dud. I like a good shooter every now and then and while I have my problems with certain franchises (like CoD), I generally enjoy myself when reviewing such games. Can't we just put aside the bickering and accept that Activision and EA will probably put forth great games this fall? They may not be for everyone and I don't agree that MW3 should be the biggest title of the year, but I'm willing to bet I'll have fun. With both.

The success the MW series has seen is not good for the gaming industry. Average quality should not be rewarded with the numbers MW has received.

As for Dark Cloud, I am very curious to play them, I watched a review on them both recently and they look very interesting. My question to those who have played them, are they story driven as from what I have seen there is more of a stronger empthasis of the town sim aspect. I'd like to know what I am getting myself in for as the UK version is a rarity and is expensive.

Aside from people trying to sway their friends to play with them and nerd ragers or trolls trying to making their E-Peen just a little bit bigger, and the companies selling it... no one.
Who cares which one sells more?
EA and Activision, which is why they would try to make the public as aware of the pre-order info as possible, so that you can filter it to PSXExtreme and the community here will go "Wow! Is MW3 really that far ahead in Pre-Orders? It must be a better game."
And why is it suddenly EA vs. Activision?
...srsly? Cmn.
Call of Duty has become a popular scapegoat but is it really accurate to assume that MW3 will be a bad game?
...srsly? ...no, it wont be, unless, as you said, the genre doesn't cater to you.
If we look at it from a logical standpoint, will shooter fans be disappointed with either BF3 or MW3? Granted, they may like one more than the other, but what are the chances that either title disappoints?
I think my brain just exploded, too much rephrasing of questions on a simple topic.
Pick the style of FPS you prefer:
Squad-Based, Large Maps, Vehicles
Run-And-Gun, Fast Paced
As much as I love this site, I'm sick of articles about BF3 Vs MW3, and THEN articles about everyone else being sick of the conflict, I know it gets reads and responses, hell I just wrote one, but Ben... you know the answers to these questions, and you know we do too. So please do me a favor, and take this conflict out back like ol' yeller.

And if you'd like to compare the number of BF3/MW3 articles we've done compared to ANY other significant source, feel free. I believe the ratio would be about 10:1, as I think I've done a grand total of three articles on the subject.
And if you hadn't noticed, we have to produce articles people want to read, and that goes beyond the established readership. Bottom line? Please don't lecture me on how to do my job.

It's his opinion. If he doesn't like something (like your article), he should be able to voice his opinion and say why he doesn't like it. Same goes with his thoughts on how we do things here.
That's what the Internet and message boards are about, right? Freedom of speech and discussions.
You're coming off very egotistical right now.

I agree with you....yesterday my critique of his editorial was met with belittlement and cronies saying "tell 'em ben!" and/or "ben owned you!".
I think the basis of an editorial is to create discussion, which may or may not include differing of opinions or disagreements.....which includes the editorial itself.

This editorial is designed to get people talking about the subject presented. If you don't want to talk about it, DON'T POST. I think the danger of getting close to readers, as we have done, is that readers suddenly think we owe them something beyond what we owe the general public. They also think they can dictate the content we provide.
Comments are to discuss the article at hand. It's not difficult to comprehend.

On top of which, it's completely incorrect. Being "sick of hearing" about BF3 and MW3 at this site is an absurd sentiment. As I said before, I think I've done a grand total of three editorials all YEAR on the subject. Are we supposed to ignore the biggest subject in gaming right now just because some readers find it annoying?
As I said, we are not catering to only one group.

The post was on-topic, with responses to questions that you* posed in the article, I just think this is an overproduced topic (Maybe not just directly on PSXextreme, but over many game websites) with an answer to the article being:
"Play what you want it's your choice, your preference and style of game play."
Why would I not post if I have a problem with something as well, is that the point? To air out my question/voice and get responses to validate/invalidate my opinion.
I'm not trying to direct your content either, nor was my last line more than a passing joke, one obviously misunderstood and taken personally. Nor am I asking you to "cater" content for me or anyone who raises similar questions.
There's no need for Cronies or Trolls to come out from the shadows, it's a hollow topic is all.

...I'm not sure how else I could interpret that. Sounds a lot like you're saying we cover the subject too much, and that I shouldn't do any more such articles. Doesn't it?

"I honestly believe certain people think we live in this safe little PSXE bubble that should only cater to everyone's tastes here."
As my last line says in my recent post, it's a hollow topic. But at no point, aside my Old Yeller joke* do I "direct" your content.
"...I'm not sure how else I could interpret that. Sounds a lot like you're** saying we cover the subject too much, and that I shouldn't do any more such articles. Doesn't it?"
Yes, in my opinion, which we are still allowed to have here right? Right.

That's about as minimal as possible, given the fact that it's by far the biggest topic in gaming today. If anything, you should be thanking me for barely covering it at all.

I can see the point from both sides. In a lot of cases, both sides of an argument can be right. This is one of them. In Ben's support, I can see how it can seem like he's personally being directed on how the site should run, and how it is ok due to the fact it's the biggest topic in gaming today. This is his site, and he may post up whatever he wants, whether we like it or not. In the end, it creates discussion, which is what we're here for.
In Syn's support, we should definitely be able to voice our opinion, whether it may be personal or not. If that's not allowed in this site, then I'd be downed and disappointed by the moral of the site. Of course, there is a line on how personal things should be, but this is definitely along those lines. Besides, there a few in this site compared to other sites, by a pretty large scale. Even the scoring and reviews get critiqued a lot, which is something I find few here as well.
Imo, I also do feel like it's a lot, not necessarily too many though. We can compare in terms of ratio, but no matter how big or small the ratio, there can be a point where one seems too many to some. It may be 3 in total, but there was also already plenty from the non-editorial posts, so really, we have talked about it many times amongst us. Personally, it almost came to the point where I can pick out specific member's profile name and put them into groups on which they prefer between the two games (or both).

Yes, this is Ben's site, and he could certainly do whatever he pleases, which is why I think a statements like what Syn says could easily be ignored and Ben can go on about like it never happened. If not, then things are taken personally. Just look at other sites, on how statements like Syn's are ignored by the editors and they go on posting as they please.

I be getting both - for both my PC and PS3 - as my buddies in Canada are PS3 guys, but my family in the UK play on the PC. - Most of my friends will be buying both (I'm 40 years old so don't feel the need to show my coolness by professing hatred of COD at every opportunity).
Its a shooter heaven this fall/winter - in addition to the above, other must buys for me are - GOW3 and Halo CE HD for the Xbox, R3 and U3 for the PS3 and Rage for the PC.
Anyone want to buy a kidney?

Modern Warfare 3 for 360. (After a big price drop, so not for 3 years probably. :P)
Battlefield 3 is my preferred shooter. MW3 will most likely be fun, but in the end, it comes down to which game your friends will be getting.
Peer pressure is a wonderful thing!! :(

Yes, I derailed the thread because I don't want to talk about BF3 or MW3. They'll both be great, but targetted at different people. Comparisons need to stop because they are NOT in direct competition, regardless of what EA says. Not taking a jab at you Ben, it's what you do, but all over the 'net... It only gets worse.

Why wont we (and by we I think you mean everyone?) have fun with BFBC3 and MW3? Well, same reason a 360 fanboy will never play MGS4; brand loyalty. It sounds silly but it's the truth. Shooters aren't my faveourite so I'm neutral, just like most of you on this site (RPG lovers :P). But ask a MW fanboy why he wont play BFBC3 and you get your answer.

no, seriously of course will have fun with them!
nothing has put a bigger smile on my face then the BF3 alpha, just the scale of the maps, and the gameplay was so much fun!
MW3 well, no one does set pieces better then IW!
loved the snow level from MW2, from the climbing up the mountain, to the stealth heartbeat monitors, to the snowmobile race.

I'm not trying to be the mysterious, witty dark horse poster here but in all honesty, i just simply do not give a furry rats arse about any of these games. :D
But really, whose in the same boat as me? Are you just, genuinly over this kind of sh!t? I know i am personally. Maybe i am just getting old but i am seriously over War shooter games. I can't be the only one surely.
For the record, i am not trying to look down & snub on those that like these types of games, i am more or less just curious to know if anyone else has just lost interest in them in general, like i have.
