Eidos: Deus Ex Boss Fights Scripted For The Narrative
It's something not enough people understand or appreciate: the more freedom allowed, the less of a storyline focus we can have.
And because Deus Ex: Human Revolution features an in-depth plot within a freedom-based structure, many have complained about the scripted events; i.e., the boss fights. But in speaking to Edge, Eidos lead designer Frank Lapikas explains the necessity of boss encounters for the sake of the narrative. After saying it was a "narrative decision," he added:
"The whole game is story-driven so if we gave all these opportunities to get through the bosses it created some headaches for us to get the narrative to work, so we had to make that decision."
We can only imagine the headaches generated by making the game as free and customizable as it already is. Remember, it's not the existence of bosses that irritate some players, but the fact that you really can't fight them any way you wish. That would fall in line with the spirit of the game, of course, but as Lapikas says, it wouldn't fit the storyline. Personally, I found it a little irksome that I couldn't deal with the bosses stealthily, but whatever. It offered a nice change of pace for me.
The only thing that bugged me was that I had to keep at least one piece of heavy weaponry in my inventory all the time, just in case. That worked out, though, and besides, it's not necessary as the game does give you the weaponry you need during or just before boss encounters.

The fact that I can launch missiles into a boss's face or empty a clip into him and have it do absolutely nothing because it isn't at the right time is just bothersome. It should at least eat a little health off his bar.
And how tired are people of hitting the "weak spot" to open up a soft underbelly? It's so old fashioned.

For the record you could quickly evade Barret using quick rolls, and in doing so he was left thinking you were on the otherside of the room.
Also both fights were incredibly different, in Barrets case I was entirely on the defensive - in the second boss battle I had to track her down while she was cloaked.

The Deus Ex games fall squarely within a "cyber punk" theme. Matrix, Ghost in the Shell, Syndicate and others can all be rooted to some early 80's novelist. Forget who. And one of the more widely known, and of course vivid visual realizations, of cyber punk, the film, The Blade Runner, can be looked at as one of the real pioneers that inspires any of the theme.

you have no say in what happens, which is a MASSIVE turn from the rest of the game.
its like your playing a totally different game!
also there really unfair.
first time i chose to play as stealth, the stealth args are pretty much useless.
so i found the boss battles really hard because i did not have the health/ armour upgrades you could get if you were going for a more run and gun approach.
thats my biggest gripe with the game it asks you to choose how you want to play then makes you sorry for doing so.
i chose to spend my points on stealth instead of health so why should i have to suffer for that?
it would be ok if the bosses went down as easily as you do, but they dont.
they take 1 billion bullets to kill, but you only take like 5!
the first boss for example took 2 explosive barrels 1 fire extinguisher, several grenades, 3 AEDs and several rockets to kill.
all in the time it only took 5 or so bullets to kill me.
