Mass Effect 3: Commander Shepard's Story Ends

Mass Effect 3 is the end of a trilogy, and that means the main character must also say goodbye.

Although it's certainly possible that BioWare could've continued the franchise with Commander Shepard at the helm (the start of a new trilogy, perhaps), producer Michael Gamble says that won't happen.

First, studio boss Ray Muzyka promised that ME3 won't mark the end of the series:

"We have ambitious plans to continue this franchise going forward. Mass Effect 3 is simultaneously a couple of different things; a thrilling and epic conclusion to the trilogy as we promised our fans we’d provide for Commander Shepard, but it’s also a brand new beginning – it’s an entry point for new fans and it’s also a brand new beginning."

Then, Gamble clarified- "After this, Commander Shepard's story is complete." Therefore, even when BioWare does produce more titles in the Mass Effect world, Shepard won't be involved. Obviously, this begs the question: how will the Commander go out in ME3? Anybody want to hazard a guess?

I think this is a good idea, if a series doesn't stay fresh into it's later sequels then it gets tiresome playing the same character. Starting with a new person opens up so many possibilities for ME4.

I just hope they don't have him/her die at the end. That's getting bothersome.

Killing off the main character is a bad move. I get the feeling he/she may end up as spaghetti in a black hole.

Killing off a main character is only a bad move if you don't have other compelling characters who can step up and fill that void.

While I'll readily admit that, sometimes, having your lead ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after is the most satisfying ending possible, other times the best thing to do for the story is to have him go down in flames.

Indeed World... these things cannot go on and on relentlessly, unless you are Kratos :) It's time for the end to come for Shepard realistically, otherwise it wouldn't seem right... good luck to him and his space ferrying friends... some furry, some not. What happens it should be a good entertaining romp for people generally...

Well, I still think Kratey should take a breather. Or at least return in some kind of incredibly different way. The games are awesomesauce but continuing on in the exact same way would feel like beating a dead horse to me. Not that it's at all dead, but a shakeup would do wonders.

Good thing that Microsoft doesn't publish this anymore. They would have them do two spin off titles and then say Shep has to come back because he is Mass Effect.

Imagine a mass effect even further into the future. Or possibly going back in time during the discovery of the mass effect.

Well since the game is heavily decision based, it's safe to say that Shepard could go out in various ways.

Cool to know Mass Effect will continue with a different setting. Who knows, it could be 50,000 years in the future with evolved breeds and a new alien [or evolved human] protagonist to choose from. Then during the game they'd mutter the words of the legendary Commander Shepard, or something similiar along those lines to enchance everyone's nostalgia.

This is exactly what I think too. They will go out of their way to please everyone with the final goodbye to Shepard. And they've already proven their affection for nostalgia with that wreckage scene in ME2. :)

This is more than a good idea, its excellent! It enables them to release epically epic stuff ;), stories with real endings.

And it's not like BioWare has any problem coming up with new, exciting characters and stories. By ending the Shepard story it opens up a whole new world of characters and stories to be made within this same universe.

Regarding the ending and speculations about if Shepard will die or not, I am willing to bet money on BioWare giving us the option to decide, both endings with equally epic proportions. If given the chance, I actually think I will let my Shepard die... Sometimes it's for the best to properly end stuff. I bet that ending will be stellar, and it enables me to make a truly fresh start with my next ME character.

It's also a safe bet to assume that references to Shepard will show up in future Mass Effect games. We will not get rid of her that easy. :)

Couldn't agree more. The story is far bigger than the characters within it. I'll miss Shepard, and would be sad to see him die, but if that has to happen to make the overall story memorable and satisfying, then so be it.
BioWare has a truly great IP in Mass Effect, potentially better in my opinion than Star Wars (and that coming from a lifelong SW fan). Wherever they go with it is fine with me and I'm guaranteeing I'll be right there with it all the way.

The only thing I'm afeard of is they will waste time making ME: MMO. Just pass that onto somebody else and start a new trilogy.

Wait and see how Old Republic turns out before saying that... I am pretty sure a ME:MMO will be based on the same engine.

I'm sure it would be great for MMO fans, so yeah I'd be happy with that team doing it. I just don't want the main team busy with it because I have no intention of playing it.

I think there'll be 3 options.

1) You fail and the Reapers win.
2) You win via self sacrifice.
3) You win via sacrificing others.

I hope they don't just have single win ending as my renegade Shep really wouldn't sacrifice herself to save the galaxy.

Omg all this talk about ME3 totally winds me up! I hereby retract my prediction about BioShock Infinite being goty 2012. It's gonna be ME3 after all. :)
