Capcom Seeks Western Partners For Better Overseas Sales
Well, they tapped Ninja Theory for DMC and Slant Six for a Resident Evil title, so why stop there?
In a note to investors (as cited by GamesIndustry.biz), Capom calls acquisitions and mergers with Western companies an "immediate priority." Essentially, the company needs to increase sales of games outside Japan and "ensure future growth."
Here's part of the note:
"Acquisitions and partnerships are one of the important strategies for increasing our market share overseas.
We aggressively seek the opportunities of acquisitions and partnerships for the purposes of creating game content with universal market appeal and acquiring technologies and know-how required for our 'Single Content Multiple Usage' strategy."
The note goes on to discourage the idea of takeover bids, because such maneuvers lead to employee departures; Capcom would rather forge partnerships. At the same time, the publisher is not considering a parternship or merger with a large Japanese game or toy manufacturer "since it would not make a significant contribution to growth in our overseas sales."
We've seen this before and chances are, if market trends continue along the same path, we'll see a lot more of it in the near future.

But this has me scratching my head. Capcom is already awesome at what it does and changing the way it does things will probably alienate more fans - and the type who haven't heard of Capcom don't pay attention to developer names anyway. Besides, they're one of the most successful devs out there, even more than Square-Enix. Considering how well their relationship with Nintendo is going I see no reason for them to go overseas.
What are they doing? Capcom games are still great.

But this is just ridiculous. As far as things go...technologically...I would say that the West has the edge over Japan currently. But stylistically in my opinion...I enjoy Japanese games much more.
So how about you guys BE YOURSELVES FOR ONCE, stop trying to act "western" and just do what you do best.

there were some weird design choices made in those games. the premium/non premium split in gt5 was a terrible idea. same with all the backtracking and fighting the same bosses over and over in dmc4. turning re into some action based gears clone that removed all the atmosphere of re was also a bad idea.
about the only franchise that has not taken a hit is the mgs series. so i think it's fair to say the japanese gaming industry as a whole has struggled with the hd consoles for various reasons. the overall gaming market has changed a lot, but i still think there is a market for the types of games japan used to be great at making. i worry about this quest for universal market appeal,

But of course many Japanese gamers themselves are getting upset at the direction many of the companies have taken. FFXIII was a big disappointment in their eyes, Biohazard 5 was NOT the Biohazard they knew of, and DMC 4 could not even compare to the wonderful style of Bayonetta.
If they work on trying to win Japanese gamers back...they'll have global appeal again because they are bringing something different! We want...VARIETY.
The 2 major developers doing this right now are ATLUS & Kojima Productions. But the rest need to work on it and realize it quick.

The term "Universal market appeal" almost made me wretch.
