Inside Source: PS4 Launches In A Year And A Half
We're not buying it but maybe others will.
According to an inside source talking about a "high-level meeting at Sony," the next PlayStation machine will be on store shelves in exactly 18 months.
Supposedly, the source "isn't a neophyte, an outsider, a gossip, a fake, or a show-off," and remains convinced that what he heard is accurate, and the PS4 will be ready to go in a year and a half. But as many are saying, there are problems with that expectation: firstly, 18 months puts the launch date in late February or early March of 2013. ...that's a retarded date for the launch of a new piece of hardware; this isn't the PS2 generation, where Japan got the system many months in advance and it launched in October for the US.
Secondly, Sony has made it clear that they have no intention of even thinking about a new PlayStation any time soon. Developers, analysts, journalists, and gamers alike are happy with the PS3 for now, and Sony only recently started to turn a profit on the system. Thirdly, we're not hearing about any huge leap in technology that would indicate a new, more powerful platform. Therefore, perhaps what the source heard was in reference to a new type of PlayStation...maybe a machine that's all digital for the new-age gamers, but isn't necessarily more powerful.
Either way, until we have even a sliver of information that supports this 18-month theory, we're going to take it with a very small grain of salt.

But it won't happen in 18 months... I don't think. I'm thinking like 2 years we will probably see something. I kind of have a feeling we may see something at E3 2012 briefly to unveil whatever it may be, as in new hardware. But I don't think we will see anything on store shelves in 18 months. I don't necessarily thinks that's a retarded date though. Lots of good games release early in the hear for one, and secondly it's a piece of hardware, it will continue to garner attention and by the time the holidays hit, sales go way up. Plus as with the PS3, there won't be a limited supply during the holidays, since it's been released for a while.
I was lucky to get mine in all honesty, and it was even a month after release or so... I seen them (about 20) PS3 at the store so I left to get more money and when I got back (30 min. Or so) there was 5 left. That sucks for the holiday shoppers.

I think the vast majority of us are still totally blown away by the quality of PS3 games coming out, but Sony is smart enough to foresee the eventual limits of the hardware and the need to move on. If they say 2013 is the right time to push things forward again, I'll believe them.

it just seems the ps3 has always had an uphill fight in na. i can't explain but it's like the ps3 has an image problem in na. there is a weird social dynamic going on with the 360 that puts a lot of peer pressure on people to get a 360. i know becuase i have encountered it many times....just like i have run into a lot of bias against the ps3. you only have to spend 10 minutes at your local gamespot in na to witness that. i don't where it's coming from but it's almost like people have been brainwashed.
if sony can be more competitive in na market they should be able to overtake the 360. that is a big if though in my opinion. ms can always match sony's price cut. it's been predicted that the ps3 will outsell the 360 this holiday period unless ms cuts its price.

Sony is going to take the time as technology advances before they solidify the hardware so that it will be cost effective when it finally does launch. This means they don't know when the thing will be done so they CAN'T know when it will hit shelves because the hardware roll-out schedule and ad campaign will have to be catered to a specific time in the market. If they don't know when it will happen, how could they, or we, possibly know when it will be ON SHELVES? The answer: we can't.

People want new tech, just look at Apple. How many new iPhones have they come out with in the last 4 years? Or how about the $600 iPad2? They don’t seem to have any problem selling everyone slightly updated versions of the same thing after a year or two and people gobble them up. At any price. So it’s not the economy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple jump into the game in the next few years, and when they do, Sony and MS better be prepared.

Sony NEEDS to beat or match the next MS console release date, and they know it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it doesn't matter who's hardware is better, showing up late to the race puts you at a huge disadvantage. Sony can't afford another launch like the PS3.
So I think its entirely possible that we could see the next playstation in 18 months or so.

in that case i guess vita will be getting a retarded date too because thats suppose to be releasing in feb.
in time for chrissy in JP, and feb slow release everywhere else.
2ndly yea they have said there not thinking about the ps4, but then they have also said it is in R&D.
contradiction much?
were not thinking about it, but were looking at what hardware it could contain and such.
oooooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk..............
are you nuts!?
yea $ony is going to release a download only system after they released and discontinued the go within 12 months in some areas!
yea, and i got a date with scooby doo!
come on, a little common sense please!
not saying what hes saying is definitely true, but its certainly plausible.
$ony always release their products in japan first so why would they change now?
to be honest i would not be surprised if the ps4 does release in 2013.
especially because of the lack of new ps3 games being announced.
ok we got dust 514 and sly this year, but besides that what other ps3 exclusives have been announced?
almost every ps3 exclusive releasing next year has been delayed from one year to that.
$ony have been so heffed up on vita they have barely announced any new ps3 games, that leads me to believe once vita is out the door will start hearing about the ps4.
maybe early 2013 is a bit unrealistic, id be much more likley for a late 2013 release in JP and early 2014 for everyone else.

The PS3 debuted in Nov 2006 which means it's coming up on 5 years in its life cycle so in 18 months that would make the PS3 6 years and 6 months so it's not inconceivable to think the PS4 could indeed debut in 18 months !

Good god, if that happens, without even seeing what it is I know it'll be ridiculously behind the times. This aint the early 2000s anymore where it's just a matter of improving game design because we are playing on a 27" tube TV. Technology is zipping along fast AND we have 1080p screens. I'm ready for 1080p gameplay to look lifelike, and stop using 30 and 60FPS as a console benchmark. PC gamers are commonly, not uniquely pushing over 250FPS.
Argue all you want about what the human eye sees, but shut the freak up until you've seen 100FPS & all max PC GPU settings on a 1080P screen.
I wish to keep the BD player, 8 cell, and, right before the midnight hour of final production decision, shove some mother loving ukranian amazing GPUs in the beast.
I feel like half of you have stockholm syndrome in your PS3 relationship. I love it because of all it does, but hoenstly gameplay is gimped, and I only prefer PS3 of PC because I'm poor and I can resell console games.
