Inside Source: PS4 Launches In A Year And A Half

We're not buying it but maybe others will.

According to an inside source talking about a "high-level meeting at Sony," the next PlayStation machine will be on store shelves in exactly 18 months.

Supposedly, the source "isn't a neophyte, an outsider, a gossip, a fake, or a show-off," and remains convinced that what he heard is accurate, and the PS4 will be ready to go in a year and a half. But as many are saying, there are problems with that expectation: firstly, 18 months puts the launch date in late February or early March of 2013. ...that's a retarded date for the launch of a new piece of hardware; this isn't the PS2 generation, where Japan got the system many months in advance and it launched in October for the US.

Secondly, Sony has made it clear that they have no intention of even thinking about a new PlayStation any time soon. Developers, analysts, journalists, and gamers alike are happy with the PS3 for now, and Sony only recently started to turn a profit on the system. Thirdly, we're not hearing about any huge leap in technology that would indicate a new, more powerful platform. Therefore, perhaps what the source heard was in reference to a new type of PlayStation...maybe a machine that's all digital for the new-age gamers, but isn't necessarily more powerful.

Either way, until we have even a sliver of information that supports this 18-month theory, we're going to take it with a very small grain of salt.

exactly, Sony wouldn't pick an arbitrary date this far ahead for something this big. Even if they made this an estimated date, it could still be off by a year based on so many considerations.

March 2013 sounds crazy till you consider the fact that maybe SONY really wants a head start on the xbox next.

With rumors stating the xbox next launching in fall 2013 a PS4 launching in march (6 months before) of the same year doesn't sound that crazy after all.

That indeed is a retarded date, Ben lol I wasn't quite done with my PS2 when PS3 launched, and I'm far from tired of the current gen as well. You can bring on the PS4, and it'll surely be exciting, but I'll stick with my PS3 for awhile yet. At least a couple more years.

If it's at all true I'll go where the games go... I'm not done with my PS3, not even close. But when I start seeing games I'd rather play on new hardware or an exclusive game for the PS4 then I'll gladly purchase it, even if that means at launch.

But it won't happen in 18 months... I don't think. I'm thinking like 2 years we will probably see something. I kind of have a feeling we may see something at E3 2012 briefly to unveil whatever it may be, as in new hardware. But I don't think we will see anything on store shelves in 18 months. I don't necessarily thinks that's a retarded date though. Lots of good games release early in the hear for one, and secondly it's a piece of hardware, it will continue to garner attention and by the time the holidays hit, sales go way up. Plus as with the PS3, there won't be a limited supply during the holidays, since it's been released for a while.

I was lucky to get mine in all honesty, and it was even a month after release or so... I seen them (about 20) PS3 at the store so I left to get more money and when I got back (30 min. Or so) there was 5 left. That sucks for the holiday shoppers.

I could see the PS4 launching in 2013, though I agree it's hard to imagine it launching so early in the year. My best guess is that PS4 launches mid-to-late 2013. PS3 continues to receive AAA exclusives and third party games through 2014 in this scenario, and then the focus turns almost exclusively to PS4 heading into 2015.

I think the vast majority of us are still totally blown away by the quality of PS3 games coming out, but Sony is smart enough to foresee the eventual limits of the hardware and the need to move on. If they say 2013 is the right time to push things forward again, I'll believe them.

I will never understand the mentality that you have to launch in the holiday window. If someone is going to buy your product, they'll buy it whenever it's available. Is your product suddenly not on store shelves when holiday shopping rolls around?

Buckeyestar is right.

Early adopters always have the cash for new gadgets, but a non-holiday launch allows for production to get up to speed so that there aren't shortages when more casual buyers (like gift-givers) are shopping.

It just doesn't feel we are done with PS3. It still has a lot more potential. So many great and exclusive games coming up. Plus the ability with system upgrades makes it a lot more durable than his predecessors. At least lets wait until PS3 numbers catch up 360 (which will happen soon) to see if more news comes up, or gets leaked...

Of topic:

---For those curious, this week numbers according to VG chartz

PS3: Japan: 32,386. America: 69,037. Others: 101,306. Total: 202,729.

Xbox360: Japan: 1,208. America: 78,256. Others: 43,516. Total: 122,980.

Wii: Japan: 11,706. America: 53,216. Others: 51,726. Total: 116,648.

---The total system sales according to this same source:

Wii: Japan: 11.79m. America: 41.73m. Others: 34.26m. Total: 87.79m.

Xbox360: Japan: 1.52m. America: 32.83m. Others: 21.27m. Total: 55.61m.

PS3: Japan: 6.94m. America: 20.52m. Others: 24.92m. Total: 52.38m.

Sorry for the of-topic but wanted to show my point. Also a kind of disclaimer. I don't really know if these numbers are true, untrue or manipulated by someone. If anyone know about a better source please tell me, because this has been my only reference in this matter for quite some time now.

vg chartz does not have the most up to date numbers but can be used as a good reference. those numbers look pretty accurate. notice the lopsided numbers for na. i can't put my finger on the exact reason but sony has struggled in na. i will be very interested in the na npd numbers next month. is the price drop enough to put sony on top? it should be. however it must be pointed out that the ps3 has only outsold the 360 for one month in na. that was back when it dropped down to $299. i was thinking oh boy here we go...the ps3 will be number one for awhile but the following month the 360 managed to climb back over the ps3.

it just seems the ps3 has always had an uphill fight in na. i can't explain but it's like the ps3 has an image problem in na. there is a weird social dynamic going on with the 360 that puts a lot of peer pressure on people to get a 360. i know becuase i have encountered it many times....just like i have run into a lot of bias against the ps3. you only have to spend 10 minutes at your local gamespot in na to witness that. i don't where it's coming from but it's almost like people have been brainwashed.

if sony can be more competitive in na market they should be able to overtake the 360. that is a big if though in my opinion. ms can always match sony's price cut. it's been predicted that the ps3 will outsell the 360 this holiday period unless ms cuts its price.

Alright, I just had a long post that explained why this was a fail but that failed (why does this site do that?) so I'll just boil it down.

Sony is going to take the time as technology advances before they solidify the hardware so that it will be cost effective when it finally does launch. This means they don't know when the thing will be done so they CAN'T know when it will hit shelves because the hardware roll-out schedule and ad campaign will have to be catered to a specific time in the market. If they don't know when it will happen, how could they, or we, possibly know when it will be ON SHELVES? The answer: we can't.

I can see a late 2013 holiday release. I think by then I will be sort of tired of my ps3. Who knows? Maybe I'll be tired next year. Maybe they should work on improving on what they already have. Add some new features, new updates, something that will make the ps3 appealing. I don't care if you rip it off the 360, just add something. For all I know they are saving those new features for the next console.

Look. It’s been 6 years since the new consoles and I have been ready for awhile now for something new. It’s not my fault that after 5 years, you guys are just now getting your PS3′s or Xbox 360′s. There is a huge market for new systems and if Sony and MS want to sit around and milk these tired-ass systems for another 2-3 years it’s doing a disservice to all gamers. The PC market is unfortuantly handcuffed by these companies that have to port everything to all the systems (BF BC3, Crysis, Ect.) and since the 360 cannot come close to a modern, up-to-date graphics card, guess who gets the short end of the stick?
People want new tech, just look at Apple. How many new iPhones have they come out with in the last 4 years? Or how about the $600 iPad2? They don’t seem to have any problem selling everyone slightly updated versions of the same thing after a year or two and people gobble them up. At any price. So it’s not the economy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple jump into the game in the next few years, and when they do, Sony and MS better be prepared.

Honestly, whether this story about the high level meeting is true or not. The fact that the next iteration of playstation could be on the horizon isn't that far fetched.

Sony NEEDS to beat or match the next MS console release date, and they know it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it doesn't matter who's hardware is better, showing up late to the race puts you at a huge disadvantage. Sony can't afford another launch like the PS3.

So I think its entirely possible that we could see the next playstation in 18 months or so.

hows it a "retarded" date?
in that case i guess vita will be getting a retarded date too because thats suppose to be releasing in feb.
in time for chrissy in JP, and feb slow release everywhere else.

2ndly yea they have said there not thinking about the ps4, but then they have also said it is in R&D.
contradiction much?
were not thinking about it, but were looking at what hardware it could contain and such.
oooooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk..............

are you nuts!?
yea $ony is going to release a download only system after they released and discontinued the go within 12 months in some areas!
yea, and i got a date with scooby doo!
come on, a little common sense please!

not saying what hes saying is definitely true, but its certainly plausible.
$ony always release their products in japan first so why would they change now?
to be honest i would not be surprised if the ps4 does release in 2013.
especially because of the lack of new ps3 games being announced.
ok we got dust 514 and sly this year, but besides that what other ps3 exclusives have been announced?
almost every ps3 exclusive releasing next year has been delayed from one year to that.
$ony have been so heffed up on vita they have barely announced any new ps3 games, that leads me to believe once vita is out the door will start hearing about the ps4.
maybe early 2013 is a bit unrealistic, id be much more likley for a late 2013 release in JP and early 2014 for everyone else.

Since the NES debuted in the mid 1980s, consoles were coming out every 5 to 6 years ! That time frame hasn't really changed all that much since that time !

The PS3 debuted in Nov 2006 which means it's coming up on 5 years in its life cycle so in 18 months that would make the PS3 6 years and 6 months so it's not inconceivable to think the PS4 could indeed debut in 18 months !

Most of you people are just tripping with craziness. Comments like " I feel we aren' through the PS3 lifecyclet..." and "see something at E3." Seriously? What do extremely subjective feelings have to do with a multi-billion company's launch decision and WHY in the world would you want to see someting at E3 a year before launch. You want to confirm it'll be old before it launches?

Good god, if that happens, without even seeing what it is I know it'll be ridiculously behind the times. This aint the early 2000s anymore where it's just a matter of improving game design because we are playing on a 27" tube TV. Technology is zipping along fast AND we have 1080p screens. I'm ready for 1080p gameplay to look lifelike, and stop using 30 and 60FPS as a console benchmark. PC gamers are commonly, not uniquely pushing over 250FPS.
Argue all you want about what the human eye sees, but shut the freak up until you've seen 100FPS & all max PC GPU settings on a 1080P screen.

I wish to keep the BD player, 8 cell, and, right before the midnight hour of final production decision, shove some mother loving ukranian amazing GPUs in the beast.

I feel like half of you have stockholm syndrome in your PS3 relationship. I love it because of all it does, but hoenstly gameplay is gimped, and I only prefer PS3 of PC because I'm poor and I can resell console games.

PC owns all and I would never consider no updating ever 14-18 months. That being said, having my 360 for 4 years(no RROD) and my PS3 for 20 months I would say I would be interested in a new machine in 18 months. I would have had my PS3 for 3 years by that point. Now I could be priced out of the PS4 and I would not spend more then 400 on one so I guess time will tell.

Fantastic! Can't wait to get it!
Good, not sure if I'll buy immediately.
Eh, not bad, but I don't care.
It's just a stupid money grab.
