CoD Third-Person Title Is World Class, Uncharted Isn't

Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue. It wasn't a prepared statement or anything like that, so let's cut the guy some slack.

...although after reading this, you might not be willing to do that. A developer insight video has been floating around at various sources, and CinemaBlend has stumbled across a questionable quote from Sledgehammer Games' Michael Condrey.

As you probably already know, the team is working on a third-person iteration of the popular Call of Duty franchise. This would place the project in the realm of games like Uncharted and Gears of War. In fact, they say their game will be something like Naughty Dog's series...except that Sledgehammer's will be "world class." Said Condrey:

"It was pretty exciting, I mean the idea of the sort of global appeal of Call of Duty meets sort of the third-person genre for the first time. And there are a lot of fans out there who enjoy games like Uncharted, right? So you can imagine that genre meets a world-class franchise."

That's not really an insinuation; that's a flat-out statement: the Uncharted fans need something that's world class. Now, perhaps the definition of the phrase is too subjective, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Maybe Condrey isn't saying their game will be better than Uncharted in terms of quality; maybe he's just saying it'll reach more people (and it will, as it's multiplatform) and it'll simply be bigger in terms of sales.

But no matter how you spin it, this guy has just stepped into some hot water and gamers everywhere are reacting.

He didn't get the memo that Uncharted is a masterpiece.

He would have been better off complimenting the Uncharted series then explaining how his game may graduate from that level.

This is why companies have spokespersons. So the statements can be controlled.

microsoft already has activision in their pocket so he cant even say a word about it. its the only game that the 360 has other than halo and gears that can make them money. theres a reason why cod dlcs are timed exclusives.

naughty dog should smack this guy in the face with all the awards they got for uncharted 2.

I agree, just because you sell a lot of games, does not mean that your game is world class. With the UnCharted Series you get game with an excellent story, characters that you care about, a game with lots of action and a game with one of the best single player experiences.

True. Uncharted is head and shoulders above CoD if you look at it from a creative or technological point of view. Once the sheeple know how Activision is ripping them off with essentially the same product every year, we'll see how "world class" your game will be then.

I wonder if what he means by world-class a game that'd be featured on all consoles and not just exclusive to the PS3? If that's what he meant, he definitely worded it wrong. If that's not what he meant, enjoy the lower reviews, buddy! There's no way your CoD will out-perform Uncharted.

I agree that outperforming Uncharted is highly unlikely.

That said. I can imagine in 5-10 years technology will allow most developers to be on the same level as far as performance and graphics. When that time comes it will truly be about the actual stories and experiences. We are on the verge.

Hehe funny stuff.
I'm thinking "world class" is being used synomously with the global success the franchise has had. I think if we were to tally up how many total sales every CoD game has sold, the net worth of the franchise is something that I'm sure clocks in around 10x the value of the Uncharted franchise. So I think the mindset is, because CoD is so popular in its appeal it is world class.
But we all know that popularity and appeal isn't always representational of the best quality. And sorry Sledgehammer, you just have no chance at topping Uncharted on the onset(if ever).
But hey, do look to uncharted for a benchmark to try and beat. I really think every game could benefit if those games held themselves to the standards Naughty Dog does. We'd all be playing better games because of it.

Ok first off they act like somehow they created Call of Duty and are expanding it... No that's not the case, they are lucky to even be a part of it if you ask me...

Secondly this game will be more like Gears so he shouldn't have mentioned Uncharted at all. There most certainly will be no platforming, there will certainly be no puzzles, and the only interaction between characters is the amount of time it takes for a bullet to hit the enemy. Gimme a break. I know we don't know for certain what will come from the game and, I'll probably buy it. But saying CoD is world class is ridiculous. I like the games, but they sell because of the mp. They dont sell because they bring a ton of great things to the table. Unlike Uncharted which does so many things right! There not even in the same class, Uncharted and CoD should never be compared because even though they will both have a 3rd person perspective, CoD will offer nothing, that makes Uncharted so damn good.

The OCD ..ahem cough cough.. Excuse me, The COD fanbase is large enough that even a fraction of it can accomplish Uncharted sales numbers.

With this entry in the series the fanbase will begin to split and then eventually we will see COD pure multiplayer games without a campaign at all. I can easily see yearly releases on both.

If game developers would stop hiring comedians, they might be able to compete with the likes of Uncharted.

I think it's a bad idea to bring Uncharted into this. Now everyone will have high expectations, which could be disastrous if those expectations aren't met.

Good luck with the mudslinging. I have a hard time believing that people who lack class could produce a product that has it. Michael Condrey needs to do more coding and less gloating.

Wow the comments bring the hate.

Honestly, I think that most people here have misconstrued the statement. I don't honestly think that he is putting Uncharted down, but using it as an example of what this third person CoD would have been somewhat similar to. To that end, fair enough.

What I think he was referring to was the brand. Uncharted has a great following, and most core gamers know of it, but just about everyone that has ever touched a game knows the CoD name (for better or worse). In that manner of speaking, yes it is a world-class game. And it is also from a quality perspective. Uncharted is just in a league of its own on that front. But yeah, I really think that the hate is unwarranted this time and his comments are just being read wrongly.

I, for one, will scrutinize that dingus's comment.

He didn't directly attack Uncharted, true. What he did, in effect, put Uncharted down as not being world-class.
Merriam Webster definition of world-class is:
"being of the highest caliber in the world <a world–class athlete>"

Dictionary.com definition is:
"ranking among the world's best; outstanding"

Both franchises received review scores of over 9 points & 4 stars, and sold millions of copies worldwide. Yet he called Uncharted, genre and CoD, world class. Think about it. His comment was a Freudian slip on what he thinks of Uncharted.

By the dictionary definition of the word, they are both world class titles of their respective genres.
Not saying that both titles are world-class was his, as stated above, Freudian slip.

Uncharted got the championship belt draped over its shoulder the only reason "COD" does well in sales is because 360 owners have few other options to play outside Halo and Gears. I played COD yeah it's fun but it ain't worth the hype it gets from the media and COD fanboys and girls.

Not to mention COD totally ISNT a world-class francise.

I played the black ops demo a while back, and honestly, I was expecting atleast a decent game. It can't be that bad if its sold so much. I own World At War, and that game was better than this (albeit WAW was a very good game..made in 2008). The graphics were horrible!? Literallly, the trees were all pixelated and their was a lot of trees so it was very noticeable..not to mention the enimies are some of the most stupid in gaming. I was sorely dissapointed with it, their was absolutely NOTHING world-class about it.

Plus, even though ND have made the masterpiece that is the uncharted series, they are still very modest when doing interviews. They NEVER say stuff like they're the best at whatever, they always talk about the actual game. You can tell they're excited about making it...this guy? To me he's more intrested in how much it will sell than anything else.

Black Ops wasn't my favorite either buddy but I haven't been particularly fond of any of Treyarchs products. IW on the other hand have singlehandedly catapulted the entire franchise into a world class product.

Why some, who have admitted on here that they don't enjoy shooters, feel the need to say one shooter is better than another is mind boggling. How would they even know the difference?

It's not that I didn't like the demo (though that was the case), these were actual issues that weren't down to preference; I know a good game from a bad game. And with all do respect...I aren't one of those people :)

Eh. I'll cut him some slack, but only because its obvious he's just some pumped up company meathead who doesn't think enough before he opens his mouth. If I were at Naughty Dog, I wouldn't bother responding...everyone knows the truth about the quality divide between Uncharted and CoD.

Guys, after reading his statement a number of times it doesn't (to me anyway) read that he is hating on Uncharted. He is saying that people love Uncharted and that if CoD had 3rd person perspective play no reason why it can't be as successful as Uncharted, or as world class.

No I don't think a CoD 3rd person game could come close to Uncharted, but I think his message is not being interpreted correctly. It seems to me he saying that if Uncharted can be world class being a 3rd person shooter, why couldn't CoD be... this is what I think he is trying to say...

Well Q, I know what you mean. It seemed to me that he is saying imagine a world class franchise meeting a different genre. He is mentioning Uncharted as a reference point for genre style, not as a scratching post.

I agree with you Qubex and it is precisely what he's saying. It's just that the hate for CoD on this site is so dense that reasoning doesn't always get through.

Something tells me if it was the other way around there'd be a lot more "take that CoD" attitude as opposed to the overly sensitive reactions we're seeing here.

Yip, he is mentioning it as a reference point, and doing so it means it is so good it has made an impression on pretty much most people...

sigh.
how you can always rely on the media to misconstrue what you say!
hes not saying uncharted is not a world class series, hes trying to explain the 3rd person action game they were working on before it got canned.
im surprised developers have not shut down their twitter accounts and refuse interviews, because almost everything they say gets twisted.

Every one of you who have your panties in a bunch need to stop, re-read the quote and then chill out. He never even mentioned these two games in the same sentence. What he DID say is, "there are a lot of fans out there who enjoy games like Uncharted".
Do we all agree with this? I think we do. He THEN went on to say "So you can imagine that GENRE meets a world-class franchise."
At no point in that statement did he ever compare the two games.
Once again, you've allowed the media to get your feathers ruffled over something that was never a problem to begin with.
They're both great games and noone, including Mr. Condrey, has said otherwise. He simply mentioned Uncharted because it is the leading game of its genre.
And thank you, Ben Dutka, for your Jerry Springer-esque style of reporting this. You got exactly what you wanted.

It still implies that the GENRE is lacking world class games. This not only insults Uncharted but every other game of the genre.

Sigh... Another tool who thinks sales equal quality or "world Class" games. The reason cod sells so much is because all the xb live junkies get all their live buddies to buy the game so they can enjoy countless hours of mindless twitch frag fests.

Those of us who want a single player experience that lasts longer than 5 hours who also enjoy quality stories and characters to go along with awesome gameplay tend to think Uncharted is way better than the yearly cod rehashes.

I take no offense here, and I love Uncharted. You are combining two separate sentences he is merely talking about the genre and gloating about his franchise. There is no Uncharted bashing in this statement. Guilty of CoD pride = Yes!

They have some balls to actually be saying that the CoD franchise is at all good. It's got to be the worst thing to happen to gaming since... Ever?

That some B.S. U2 is better than any COD game that I've played (played them all since COD4). And when Uncharted 3 hits and it's as good or better than U3, Uncharted will have solidified itself as the best franchise around right now.

U1= very good
U2= Masterpiece
U3= Even better than U2?

COD4= Awesome
WAW= Very good
MW2= Very good
BO= Decent

COD gets worse and worse, while Uncharted gets better and better and whores itself out.

Just finished uncharted 1 and have to say I found it pretty overatted. I know everybody says UC2 is much better and hopefully it is, but to this point I really dont see what the fuss is about. UC1 is a 7 in my book

Dont flame me ;) hehe

Am I supposed to be worried? I dunno... if they can make a game that is better than Uncharted, then great. More great games! But they won't.

The only statement that bothered me was saying that people like games like Uncharted, so imagine how much they'd like a CoD 3rd person shooter. But here's the thing... I didn't like Uncharted because it was a 3rd person shooter. I'm not interested in just a 3rd person shooter. I'm not even a fan of the genre.

I liked Uncharted because it was freaking amazing. Genre had nothing to do with it.
