CoD Third-Person Title Is World Class, Uncharted Isn't
Maybe it was just a slip of the tongue. It wasn't a prepared statement or anything like that, so let's cut the guy some slack.
...although after reading this, you might not be willing to do that. A developer insight video has been floating around at various sources, and CinemaBlend has stumbled across a questionable quote from Sledgehammer Games' Michael Condrey.
As you probably already know, the team is working on a third-person iteration of the popular Call of Duty franchise. This would place the project in the realm of games like Uncharted and Gears of War. In fact, they say their game will be something like Naughty Dog's series...except that Sledgehammer's will be "world class." Said Condrey:
"It was pretty exciting, I mean the idea of the sort of global appeal of Call of Duty meets sort of the third-person genre for the first time. And there are a lot of fans out there who enjoy games like Uncharted, right? So you can imagine that genre meets a world-class franchise."
That's not really an insinuation; that's a flat-out statement: the Uncharted fans need something that's world class. Now, perhaps the definition of the phrase is too subjective, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Maybe Condrey isn't saying their game will be better than Uncharted in terms of quality; maybe he's just saying it'll reach more people (and it will, as it's multiplatform) and it'll simply be bigger in terms of sales.
But no matter how you spin it, this guy has just stepped into some hot water and gamers everywhere are reacting.

microsoft already has activision in their pocket so he cant even say a word about it. its the only game that the 360 has other than halo and gears that can make them money. theres a reason why cod dlcs are timed exclusives.
naughty dog should smack this guy in the face with all the awards they got for uncharted 2.

That said. I can imagine in 5-10 years technology will allow most developers to be on the same level as far as performance and graphics. When that time comes it will truly be about the actual stories and experiences. We are on the verge.

I'm thinking "world class" is being used synomously with the global success the franchise has had. I think if we were to tally up how many total sales every CoD game has sold, the net worth of the franchise is something that I'm sure clocks in around 10x the value of the Uncharted franchise. So I think the mindset is, because CoD is so popular in its appeal it is world class.
But we all know that popularity and appeal isn't always representational of the best quality. And sorry Sledgehammer, you just have no chance at topping Uncharted on the onset(if ever).
But hey, do look to uncharted for a benchmark to try and beat. I really think every game could benefit if those games held themselves to the standards Naughty Dog does. We'd all be playing better games because of it.

Secondly this game will be more like Gears so he shouldn't have mentioned Uncharted at all. There most certainly will be no platforming, there will certainly be no puzzles, and the only interaction between characters is the amount of time it takes for a bullet to hit the enemy. Gimme a break. I know we don't know for certain what will come from the game and, I'll probably buy it. But saying CoD is world class is ridiculous. I like the games, but they sell because of the mp. They dont sell because they bring a ton of great things to the table. Unlike Uncharted which does so many things right! There not even in the same class, Uncharted and CoD should never be compared because even though they will both have a 3rd person perspective, CoD will offer nothing, that makes Uncharted so damn good.

I get it. He's talking ish to get attention. It's cute in a desperate way. However, it also makes you sound like an idiot. How about making something that is comparable with a PS3 exclusive, any PS3 exclusive first and THEN make something that can stand up to Uncharted.
And to the fella over at Sledgehammer Games with the dusty mouth, I hope you paid attention to that 3rd person mode in MW2 before you ran your mouth because that didn't go over so well.

He is stating the COD is the "World Class" franchise versus Uncharted being what? A one region, country or small island franchise? To my knowledge Uncharted games are sold all over the world are they not? I want to know what this guys definition of "World Class" is.*
And NO! I shall not cut the guy some slack this is a preemptive strike.**

With this entry in the series the fanbase will begin to split and then eventually we will see COD pure multiplayer games without a campaign at all. I can easily see yearly releases on both.

I think it's a bad idea to bring Uncharted into this. Now everyone will have high expectations, which could be disastrous if those expectations aren't met.
Good luck with the mudslinging. I have a hard time believing that people who lack class could produce a product that has it. Michael Condrey needs to do more coding and less gloating.

I don't see COD ever being World class, not if they keep tricking the minds of millions and just give them cows the same thing over and over.
COD will die off soon. Well, It deserves too.

Honestly, I think that most people here have misconstrued the statement. I don't honestly think that he is putting Uncharted down, but using it as an example of what this third person CoD would have been somewhat similar to. To that end, fair enough.
What I think he was referring to was the brand. Uncharted has a great following, and most core gamers know of it, but just about everyone that has ever touched a game knows the CoD name (for better or worse). In that manner of speaking, yes it is a world-class game. And it is also from a quality perspective. Uncharted is just in a league of its own on that front. But yeah, I really think that the hate is unwarranted this time and his comments are just being read wrongly.

He didn't directly attack Uncharted, true. What he did, in effect, put Uncharted down as not being world-class.
Merriam Webster definition of world-class is:
"being of the highest caliber in the world <a world–class athlete>"
Dictionary.com definition is:
"ranking among the world's best; outstanding"
Both franchises received review scores of over 9 points & 4 stars, and sold millions of copies worldwide. Yet he called Uncharted, genre and CoD, world class. Think about it. His comment was a Freudian slip on what he thinks of Uncharted.
By the dictionary definition of the word, they are both world class titles of their respective genres.
Not saying that both titles are world-class was his, as stated above, Freudian slip.

I mean come on, its already gonna be hard enough for them to sell a TPS CoD seeing as how their fanboys can't play anything other than an FPS. Now he's made a stupid comment that's gonna make reviewers compare his game to Uncharted, and then they'll really be down sh*t creek.

I played the black ops demo a while back, and honestly, I was expecting atleast a decent game. It can't be that bad if its sold so much. I own World At War, and that game was better than this (albeit WAW was a very good game..made in 2008). The graphics were horrible!? Literallly, the trees were all pixelated and their was a lot of trees so it was very noticeable..not to mention the enimies are some of the most stupid in gaming. I was sorely dissapointed with it, their was absolutely NOTHING world-class about it.
Plus, even though ND have made the masterpiece that is the uncharted series, they are still very modest when doing interviews. They NEVER say stuff like they're the best at whatever, they always talk about the actual game. You can tell they're excited about making it...this guy? To me he's more intrested in how much it will sell than anything else.

Black Ops wasn't my favorite either buddy but I haven't been particularly fond of any of Treyarchs products. IW on the other hand have singlehandedly catapulted the entire franchise into a world class product.
Why some, who have admitted on here that they don't enjoy shooters, feel the need to say one shooter is better than another is mind boggling. How would they even know the difference?

No I don't think a CoD 3rd person game could come close to Uncharted, but I think his message is not being interpreted correctly. It seems to me he saying that if Uncharted can be world class being a 3rd person shooter, why couldn't CoD be... this is what I think he is trying to say...

how you can always rely on the media to misconstrue what you say!
hes not saying uncharted is not a world class series, hes trying to explain the 3rd person action game they were working on before it got canned.
im surprised developers have not shut down their twitter accounts and refuse interviews, because almost everything they say gets twisted.

Do we all agree with this? I think we do. He THEN went on to say "So you can imagine that GENRE meets a world-class franchise."
At no point in that statement did he ever compare the two games.
Once again, you've allowed the media to get your feathers ruffled over something that was never a problem to begin with.
They're both great games and noone, including Mr. Condrey, has said otherwise. He simply mentioned Uncharted because it is the leading game of its genre.
And thank you, Ben Dutka, for your Jerry Springer-esque style of reporting this. You got exactly what you wanted.

The only statement that bothered me was saying that people like games like Uncharted, so imagine how much they'd like a CoD 3rd person shooter. But here's the thing... I didn't like Uncharted because it was a 3rd person shooter. I'm not interested in just a 3rd person shooter. I'm not even a fan of the genre.
I liked Uncharted because it was freaking amazing. Genre had nothing to do with it.
