PSXE Poll Update: Dead Island Will Need Good Reviews

Last week, Techland's Dead Island got plenty of attention, and we spoke to the developer about the game's in-depth action.

However, while many are already on board, the majority of our readers say they'll need to see some reviews before becoming interested; presumably, interested enough to warrant a purchase.

Many others say they'll just pick up Resistance 3, or would rather save their money for the upcoming fall blitz, but the zombie-infested survival title has definitely turned some heads. We're big fans of the RPG elements and the fact that it supposedly boasts 30-40 hours of gameplay. But expectations are high and Insomniac's anticipated shooter drops on the same day (Tuesday, September 6), so Dead Island definitely has its work cut out for it...how will the critics respond?

This week, it's time to talk about the aforementioned competition: Resistance 3. The FPS genre is immensely competitive and some are saying a game like R3 can't stand up to the likes of Killzone 3, Battlefield 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. But do you even care? Are you already psyched? Or are you skeptical, too?

I still need to get Killzone 3, and I'll try to get Dead Island, it's just more along the fact that getting older causes more bills to rise up than getting to play games :( But I'm still super interested in Dead Island, if not purely from the amazing trailers they keep dishing out.

Funny thing actually, my friend just bought himself and a few others the 4pack on steam, so I'm quite excited haha, pre-installing right now. So I guess I won't have to wait to play it after all :D

Dead Island is pulling in roughly 8's because it has technical problems and isn't as pretty as you'd hope, but that's good and from what I read it IS the atmospheric open world Fallout 3 of the zombie world that some of us suspected. Though I was thinking more far cry, the commentary is mostly positive. We'll see what Ben thinks, but I bet the RPG stuff will tickle him.

I've got to wait on both that and R3, but I think they will be sweet. R3 may be an FPS but it does have a special quality that, while not universally appealing, is likely to keep the fans stuck to it to the exclusion of all else. I also expect some good 9 scores so that will help.

Judging from the IGN review it seems you were right and I were wrong, World. I hereby in public humbly bow before the wisdom of thee.

Luckily! Cause that means we finally got a new 4 player campaign coop game to enjoy with friends. IGN even straight out calls it a rpg. Oh happy autumn!

right now it has a metascore of 76 after 13 critic reviews. i don't think your statement that it's pulling in mostly 8's is accurate. there are very few 8 scores. it's drawing mostly 7's. i also see a bunch of 6 and 7's out there for dead island. it got a six from eurogamer and and a seven from joystiq. 3/5 from destructoid. game informer 7. sounds like an average to slighly above average game to me. so i say my prediction came true. what we have here is an average game that had a kick ass trailer to hype it up...a trailer that in no way represents the actual gameplay btw.

i'm in no rush to run out and get a mid 70's rated game. if this game is anywhere near fallout 3 with zombies i'll literaly eat my shorts. fallout 3 was one spectacular game that had tons of depth. i've seen nothing or read nothing in the reviews that qualifies this game to be mentioned in the same sentence as fallout 3.

IGN US gave it an 8 for the ps3 version (they said the 360 has less pop in for textures) so I'm mostly anticipating Ben's review. Though I already have the game pre-installed so it's not a guess for me but still, most places I see say it's entirely Fallout with zombies and the gameplay is amazing, it's just the graphics aren't too great.

I said pulling in roughly 8s, and that was last night before more reviews popped up, but I think that will hold up when all is said and done. I did not say "mostly 8s"

Well I'm picking up R3 Tuesday. Exclusives will almost always win when it comes to me. I'm one of the ones who will wait on review (singular meaning Ben's).

I loved Killzone 3. Only played it for the single player experience but have gone through it twice with the DS controller and once with the Move controller. The game's "flow" definately benefits from the Move controller.

Recommended if you are wanting something good to waggle.

Not that interested in the Resistance franchise so giving that one a miss. Got to be selective this generation! Nothing against the series but Killzone always had better atmosphere and graphics in my opinion.

I am very interested in Dead Island. Love a good Zombie game but sort of got bored of Sirens Curse which was a bit too scripted. "Fallout 3 with Zombies" definately sounds more the way to go!

I watched the first 20 minutes of gameplay at IGN. The tropical setting alone makes me wanna play this. The RPG and collecting elements (along with a very long campaign story) pretty much makes this a done deal!

Only complaints about this game were average graphics, a few glitches and presentational issues. Gameplay should've ranked higher than 8.5 the way the reviewer was harping on about it.

"Like Fallout with zombies"... and a much better setting!!

Yep, once I get through Resistance 3, Gears 3 and Shadow of the Colossus, I might pick this up before Batman and Dark Souls release. (Or I'll wait til the Christmas sales roll round and get it a little cheaper)

... on second thought,

I'll have all the November releases to deal with. Well, I guess this'll be an early October purchase.

Post-nuclear is also a highly used setting for many games.

Nice to see a change of scenery with a lush tropical island resort.

yeah but it's a lot different in Fallout 3, this is post nuclear in a world that got stuck in the 1950's for a few hundred years.

Already have Dead Island pre-loaded on my PC. Just waiting for it to unlock now. Even if it's lackluster, I know I'll still enjoy it as I've always enjoyed zombie entertainment. No matter how awful it may be. Actually the worse it is, the better it is in some cases lol.

Can I just say that I'll probably pick up the game soon but what is it with the accents?

As a Scot living in Australia I'm used to a bit of variety in the lingo but if you are going to get some voice actors at least get them to watch more than one episode of Flipper before allowing them to pretend to be Aussies...

Strewth cobber, some shelia's trying to chew my arm off... Pass me another coldie Bruce, I'm drier than a dead dingos donger...

"Super-Mario-Italian" lol - me too! That was really annoying. I learnt to ignore it though. But it would be a good idea if they hired actors who knew Italian.

Well, I`ve just read 1 review so far and that`s from Eurogamer, and they gave it a 6/10. The game apparently have ugly technical problems,textures, edges and frame-rates issues and so on.

But then again, it has coop and it`s supposed to be a long game(20 or more hours).

Think I`ll save my money and just buy Resistance 3. If there`s any truth to the rumor, R3 supposed to be the best instalment yet.

Read more review turbey , he seem to exaggerate the flaws of the game compared to the rest who could easily see past them and actually enjoy for what it is .

I hope you won t let one of review keep you away from buying it at a certain point .

I will. Like I said, I did just read one review, Eurogamers. And I will most likely buy this game at some point, but not this week,there my money goes to Resistance 3.

Well, I`m a big fan of the Resistance series, and they (Insomniac Games) haven`t let me down yet.
And considering that they spent a whole extra year working on Resistance 3, I think I`m gonna like it ;)

im really surprised its getting better reviews then i was expecting!
went and preordered it today and cancelled my preorder for resistance 3 because its looking like such a mess!
i always said going MP would be the death of insomniac, though they did not have to prove it to me!

Man,I ate way too many chocolate brownies and I'm having terrible heart burn =p

I'm not into ZOmbie games, so Dead Island wasn't ever even on the map for me. Boo hoo

As for R3. I think R3 looks good. I'm not too concerned about other FPS games when looking at R3's viability. I suppose those who are fairly dedicated online may not want to spread their skills out too thin by taking on another online shooter. But as for the single player stuff, when judging it against the competition, I think the Resistance games try harder and deliver more by way of story than most FPS offerings. More than MW or BF at least, I think. I can't buy R3, but I may snag a rental copy here this week. Action FPS types are easy to pick up, plow through, and put back without too much distraction.

i havent read any reviews i do want it but right now i have so many games i would like just saving and grabbing later. school stuff for my son comes first
also little concerned with the price they are selling this game for 39.99CDN (walmart,bestbuy) first week not sure why

Its getting about the same review scores that Driver: San Francisco is getting... I'll be picking them both up tomorrow along with Resistance 3. I hope Resistance's review scores will top Dead Island's and Driver's.

i had this preordered and was excited until i saw the gameplay footage. I'm neier here nor there when it comes to the zombie genre.

Not saying it won't be good for some peple. It may be great. But i think i got on the hype train too early.
