Resistance 3 vs. Dead Island: Gamers Have A Tough Decision

We haven't given you our Dead Island review yet but rest assured, it's coming. And we already told you that Resistance 3 is awesome.

We don't want to give anything away just yet concerning Techland's effort, but you can check out some very positive reviews elsewhere. Both games in question came out on Tuesday and with a loaded fall lineup, many consumers have adopted the following position: "With so many titles I want to buy in the coming months, I really only want to purchase one this week...but which one?" Yeah, we feel your pain. It isn't easy.

While R3 is a standard - albeit intense and satisfying - FPS, Dead Island features a more open format and role-playing-like elements. It also operates from a first-person perspective but clearly, these are two very different experiences. So what to do? Well, in truth, the one distributed by Deep Silver will offer more bang for your buck, as the single-player campaign can extend as far as 30 or 40 hours. However, if you happen to get into the multiplayer in Resistance 3, that one gets the edge in terms of longevity. And what about technical achievement?

Well, if you care a lot about such things, neither title will impress the hell out of you. In fact, if you're a classic graphic whore, you're bound to harp on several drawbacks in both, despite R3's fantastic environment and atmosphere. Or, one could consider the "X factors;" i.e., I know some people who just don't care about zombies. They really won't play anything with zombies, and they don't care about an in-depth, survival-based zombie-slayin' adventure. And then there are others who just don't play shooters. If you fall into such categories, the decision is easy for you.

But for most gamers, it's not going to be an easy decision. We might end up recommending both (we definitely recommend Insomniac's newest), and we'd hardly be the only source to do so. We keep thinking both games should've arrived a month earlier; it would've given us a bigger buffer between "the decision" and the jam-packed fall lineup. Oh, and did we mention that a couple great HD Collections come out this month? You know, the God of War Origins Collection and the ICO & Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection? ...sorry.

Well I have R3 so Dead Island will have to wait until the beginning of next year or until summer.

To get R3 for the polish and gameplay or Dead Island for the zombies and exploration?

I'm going to get one as I need something to play this month.

My heart says Dead Island but my head says Resistance 3.

Resistance 3 is preordered. Picking it up tomorrow.

I would really love to get my hands on Dead Island though, since I love Borderlands and Fallout 3, ie FPS and RPG mixed very well.

Dead Island I'm gonna wait for a price drop to somewhere around 30 or 35 bucks at OzGameShop. That is cheap where I come from, and a whole lot better than buying it at EB for $100.

Can't wait for WKC! :D I also want to get Dead Island as well.. I've been hearing very good things about it from friends who have it.

R3 easily. Dead Island looks like garbage, zombies have been so over done. I have R3 and am going to be playing it later tonight. And I hate the fact that DI had that amazing trailer that doesn't represent at all what the game is.

It sounds interesting, but sort of just mindless let's go kill zombies.

R3 is a shooter with an emotional and brutal tale, and incredible multiplayer (the beat blew me away).

And I can't wait to fire that baby up.

Resistance isn't really a good series. Dead island holds more then resistance. but imagine a sequel lol, it'd be unimaginable how much it'll move forward.

Dead Island looks dull. Kind of a poor man's Left 4 Dead. I don't see that competing with R3. Brain-dead zombie slaying is popular however (thanks Treyarch), so who knows...

I'm going with Dead Island. It looks like a game that I've been wanting to play for a very long time. I hope it delivers. I've never been much of a Resistance fan. Instead of buying number 3 I'll just finally start playing number 2 that I bought a long time ago.

I was really interested in Dead Island until the reviews I read suggested there are some really difficult areas with spawning 'runners' that are frustrating unless you are playing co-op. I wouldn't be.
I do not want to try to relax with a frustrating game.

I owned R1 and played it online a fair bit before I got bogged down even more in work hours. If I read that it has an exemplary single player then I might pick it up.

Well, I`ve already ordered Resistance 3...hoping I`ll get it today. And so far reviews for Resistance 3 have been really good (8`s and 9`s), so that`s good news. Same goes for Dead Island I guess, but I hear the story is pretty bad in that one. Will be buying it someday though; zombieslaying coop never get`s boring in my opinion.

But considering my internet is kinda kaputt, I think I`ll wait buying Dead Island for now.

Not too tough a decision. :) I'll get Dead Island after the first price drop though. But now is not the time to invest in a <80 rated game.

i agree wiith that. the metascore for r3 is 83 right now. di is 75. is it really that tough of a decision when one game scores much higher than the other? is ben implying he's going to score di near r3? i guess that would be consistent becuase review scores for dead island are all over the place.

i'll get resistance 3 when it drops in price a bit. i'll bite at 40 because white knight comes out in a week and theres no point in me buying resistance 3 then a week later lose myself in wkc2.

Resistance 3 tomorrow... Dead Island when it's going cheap. Not difficult. What is difficult is deciding whether also to pick up El Shaddai if I see it tomorrow or not...

I'm going R3 for now. I just can't ignore that franchise. They had the very best launch game for the PS3, and I really liked R2 as well, especially at the end. My loyalty is to Insomniac and R3. I'll check out DI later.

It's going to be extremely interesting to read how well coop play is done in Dead Island. Four player full campaign coop is pretty rare.

boring been there done that mindless shooter with nothing but brown, brown and more brown backdrop, and can be completed in roughly 7 hours.
or fun as hell funny zombie slasher with character customization, weapon customizations, RPG elements, heaps of replayability, 50+ hours, all draped in a beautiful tropical island backdrop.
easiest decision i have ever had to make!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
harder decision is if i should grab warhammer 40K or save my cash and put it towards one of next months games.

since i'm not a big fan of shooters, i picked up dead island yesterday, and i LOVE it !! But i'm sure the ones who picked up R3 are gonna enjoy it because i know it's a great game ! both games are must-buys if you want my opinion

i pre-ordered (and picked up) DI. i played till 3am yesterday. it was awesome! i'm super tried of FPS (and been never a big fan) but own many CODs and others. i really liked DI because of the open world exploration and the customization. plus doing melee weapons and knives and swords is f_cking awesome!
i'm happy with my purchase. can't wait for the Arena DLC unlock...

Too bad the reviews for dead island are nowwhere close to glowing as R3 haha. I can rent dead island from blockbuster with there $1.99 daily fees beat it in 2-3 days and save $55 and buy R3 and rape the chimeran blood out of it online for months till bc3 and mw3 comes out.

The beta was lacklustre if you ask me but the final copy is supposedly fantastic so I'm all for R3 since I'm thoroughly attached to the narrative.

I actually had a blast with the driver SF demo. Yeah it got average 70s but i will pick it up as a bargin bin price in the future im a fool for cockpit view and real world cars. But too many AAA titles out soon Just got R3, less than 2 weeks i get gears 3, then dark souls, then bf3, forza 4, mgs collection, mw3 and of course top of list Uncharted 3. I might of missed a few games. thats over $300-400 + on games and i got bills too.
